Paul is a strong advocate for the use and tinkering of rocket mass heaters – a wood burning stove design that utilizes the heat typically lost through exhaust piping in conventional designs as an additional heat source. The design is simple enough that anyone can build one, and can heat your home with as much as 90% less wood. Paul’s latest video series shows in great detail how to build and use a rocket mass heater several different ways – you can learn more here.
In addition to maximizing fuel efficiency with the exhaust piping, rocket mass heaters incorporate a thermal mass to more gradually distribute heat, and create a longer lasting heat source. Often times this is done by winding the exhaust piping through a beautiful cob bench, but in Paul’s DVD sets, he also covers pebble style rocket mass heaters.
Paul Wheaton, the bad boy of Permaculture was proclaimed by Geoff Lawton in 2012 the Duke of Permaculture. He is the creator of two on-line communities. One is about Permaculture, Permies.com, and one is about software engineering, CodeRanch.com.
Paul is a great friend and an awesome innovator, he is always pushing just a bit harder to see what is possible with Permaculture.
He has a wonderful piece of property in the wilds of Montana where he is currently working hard to show just how awesome permaculture can be.
Recently he began an interesting take on building a permaculture community called deep roots. He and his brother are also almost finished with the first ever WOFATI, an earth contact style house he designed based on evolving Mike Ohler’s underground house design system.

Today Paul joins us to discuss cooking with and caring for cast iron cookware, his work to determine the effectiveness of CFS (or lack there of) and building and utilizing rocket mass heaters.
Additionally tune in to learn about an event where you can meet both Paul and myself along with one of our mutual heroes, Sepp Holtzer.
Paul is the author of many articles both online and in many off line publications. He is a pioneer in Permaculture and taking techniques to another level. He has published hundreds of videos on his YouTube channel and works tirelessly to teach how profit and sustainability are not mutually exclusive ideas.
