AFrank Golbeck, Head Mead Maker and CEO Credit - Arpit Mehta www.iamphotog.combout: Frank Golbeck
CEO, Co-Founder, Head Mead Maker / UC Berkeley, Naval Officer

Frank’s love for mead started with his grandfather. He was an apple rancher in Oak Glen, California. He retired from apple ranching and stayed busy making fruit wine and hard cider, grape wine and some mead.

Frank’s first memory of mead was at 8 years old, peeking over the back of the bar while his grandfather poured samples of mead to people. They were laughing and having a great time.

As he grew older Frank read Tolkien and Beowulf. Shakespeare and Harry Potter… Mead kept coming up in these epic tales. Then, when he was home from college, his grandfather gifted him the last bottle of his mead. 12 years aged.

He took his grandfather’s mead to university and shared it with his friends and his now wife. Frank started making mead and discovered more about its magic, and the way it made people dance.

Frank was in the navy after graduating from UC Berkeley and was able to collect honey from all over the world. One day, his wife asked what he would do with all of the time, money and energy in the world. He told her he wanted to make mead and share it with people. He has done just that.

Nick Ferguson and Jack Spirko to Host 4 Hours of Plant Propagation Bonus Q&A

Nick Ferguson’s Plant Propagation Course has been a huge success for PermaEthos.

The feed back has been exceptional and we are sure perhaps a few hundred back yard nurseries will spring up because of it this year.  This is yet another example of our real goals at PermaEthos, to empower as many people as possible to develop their own properties and business in consort with Permaculture ethics and design science.

Nick and I talked a lot about the production of this course and what we wanted it to do.  The main goals were simple.

  1. No fluff, the real necessary information to set up a full on production system for plant propagation with all major techniques, rooting, misting, grafting, etc.
  2. For it to be understandable where anyone could take that information and get the ball rolling.

Those goals were met but we had one more goal.  Under promise and over deliver.  To that end on the weekend of Feb 21-22 Nick and I will  host two conference calls of two hours each.  The calls will run from 11AM – 1PM central standard time.

Call in info will be sent to all students a day in advance.  Recordings of the call will then be added to the course for use by all students.

In addition Nick will be doing a walk though of my property with me, pruning some of my trees, collecting scion wood and some other cool stuff.  All of this will be video’d and uploaded to the course site as well.  This video will be largely unedited but it will be in full HD and be shot with professional gear.  It will also address issues for trees 1-2 years old planted on a true permaculture site.

Again all of this is bonus material and will be provided freely to all students both current and future for Nick Plant Propagation course.

On the call we will focus on developing niche markets, marketing your business, dealing with any and all propagation issues and just basically answer any and all questions you guys have.

If you have been considering taking the course you still have plenty of time to get enrolled and take your first pass though the videos before the coming call.  Students should begin to prepare now, write down questions as you plan your nursery, plan for your end goals, etc.  Personally I feel for those that want to set up a business of this kind these two calls alone if applied will be worth the entire cost of the course.

You can learn more about the course at The PermaEthos Basic Plant Propagation Course

As a final note we will also be using your feedback during this call to help us in developing the Advanced Plant Propagation Course which Nick will be developing in the future.

The Permaethos Plant Propagation Course is Now Live

The PPC is Now Live at PermaEthos.com

The PPC is Now Live at PermaEthos.com

The long awaited Plant Propagation Course taught by Nick Ferguson is now live.  You can learn more about it at the PermaEthos Website.

We have made a few chapters free so you can get a feel for the course and Nick’s teaching style.  We feel this course will empower many to set up small to even large scale nurseries.

Nick is a passionate teacher with about 20 years of plant propagation experience behind him.  In the course he covers layering, division, grafting, rooting with mist systems and many other ways to produce plants of top quality and unique varieties.

Personally after buying over 500 trees and plants in the last two years I consider the ability to propagate plants akin to printing money.  Even without selling any plants, had I had access to this knowledge in the past I could have produced the majority of those 500 plants for myself at little to no cost.  At an average cost of 20 dollars a plant, that is about 10,000 dollars of plant stock I could have produced for myself.

To learn more about the course visit this link http://learn.permaethos.com/course/plant-propagation/

PS – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.  If you pre registered an email just went out with how to get your discount on this course.  PLEASE use the information in that email.  If you didn’t get it email me and I will make sure you do.  You have 30 days to get that discount if you are in the group that preregistered.

If you jump the gun and pay full price we will not go though the administrative hassle to refund the difference.  You have a full 30 days to get the discount so please be patient if it appears that the spam monster ate your email with the code in it.

To email me any questions about signing up, etc. just email jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com and put “plants tspc” in the subject line.

Episode-1335- The PermaEthos Model 3.0

A View of the First PermaEthos Farm!

A View of the First PermaEthos Farm!

See the PermaEthos PDC Video Trailer Here!

Today we are going to talk about PermaEthos.  I have been on a break from “permaculture topics” and will continue that break though next week but today we have some really exciting things to discuss.

PermaEthos began as a dream, one simple libertarian community built on the ethics of Permaculture.  It was hoped to be a place where 100-160 families could live and work together for liberty and independence.

In our quest to leave government issues behind we ran into of course more government.  Despite having surveyed the community and identified over 2.5 million in potential revenues for the projects establishment, we could not get local governments to simply tell us what we could and could not do.  All wanted a “master plan” done by professional engineers in advance.

We shifted to a community farm model, we again looked to “investors” and while we did identify that a co-op model likely would work, we also found two wonderful community members who wanted to make a serious commitment to PermaEthos in the form of Charlie and Kevin of Elijah Springs Farm in West Virgina.  We are now only a few short weeks away from PermaEthos shifting from dream to reality.  Listen today to hear how you can help out.

Join Me Today to Hear…

Episode-1321- Bitcoin, PermaEthos, Homestead Updates and Matt Miller on Vehicle Maintenance

Three of out 12 New Baby Ducks

Three of our 12 New Baby Ducks

Time for a four parter, as I said I am making it up to you guys for lost time during recent travel and I suspect at least one show will not happen next week as well with the workshop and all. So today here is what we have on hand.

First I am going to talk about why the “big news” about bitcoin is not big news in any negative way.  Of course I mean the IRS ruling that BTC is property and not currency.  Anyone running a business publicly collecting BTC should have greeted this announcement with a resounding duh, frankly, no shit is more accurate.

Let me break it to you bluntly, the IRS guidance is actually factual, accurate and consistent with all existing code and treatment of property and assets by the IRS.

Note I am not saying the IRS is fair, that taxes are fair or that taxes are okay and not theft.  What I am saying is based on current IRS code, historical treatment of barter and the trade of goods and the treatment of commodities, the new IRS guidance is fair and consistent in relation to historical IRS guidelines.

Here are several reason this ruling is meaningless…

  • Anyone with a brain taking in lots of bitcoin into a business was likely already doing the accounting as the guidelines state.
  • The IRS still can’t track person to person bitcoin, they don’t have that ability, if they ever acquire it, the system will take it away from them in an “update”.
  • New software to maximize tax advantages of this ruling is likely being coded RIGHT NOW.
  • Likely the IRS is going to have to change their guidance when BTC becomes a recognized currency anyway, it will then function like any currency on the FOREX, this is going to happen.

Second we move one to a bit more on PermaEthos and a few questions that have come up since my big announcement yesterday.  I will also again explain that YES the MSB will get a discount code for Geoff Lawton’s PDC and the code will be in the MSB likely today or tomorrow but definitely before the PDC goes on sale.

The new Ethos model has been extremely well received!  I want to talk just a bit more about it.  I will be updating the PermaEthos site soon to reflect the new model and start creating a true virtual community around it.  It will be important that Ethos function both as an extension of the TSP community and yet function on its own merits to those who have no clue what or who a TSP is.

Then I have some “homestead updates” for you guys.  Yes an MSB only video will come out this week by the way, showing a lot of what I am going to talk about.  There is some cool stuff though, today our homestead population grew by yet another dozen with 12 ridiculously cute ducklings!  I’ll tell you also how they and the geese are going to get some “ponds” that will almost be actual ponds.

Then I am joined by Matthew Miller who is a long time listener to TSP and an MSB member.  . In an effort to continue building resiliency and self-sufficiency in his life he wanted to learn how to maintain his own vehicles. Inheriting his late grandfather’s 94 Ranger was the final push needed. A 20 year old truck with 80k miles on it was a great starter project to get his feet wet.

He has documented all of his repairs and progress on the TSP forums for others to learn and gain encouragement from. Since starting he has gained a basic working knowledge of autos and has no fear when he hears a knock or rattle. Through his desire to do things himself he has inspired friends and family members to do their own work and offers to help when he can.

Matthew loves watching his kids play in and on his truck or car when he’s working on them. They’ll jump in with tools and ‘help’ daddy out. Knowing that he is teaching them positive values, resiliency, and self-reliance is the greatest reward he’s gotten since learning this new skill-set.
