Episode-1274- 14 Life Rules of a Modern Survivalist

I was going to call this show “14 Rules for Being a Modern Survivalist” but I realized that would violate my survival tenet that reads…

“Your personal philosophy is more important for you than mine! You are the master of your own life and if you don’t agree with my views, great, define, understand and implement your own. The biggest thing you can do is understand that you are in control of your life and that what you do matters. Those two factors have the greatest impact on individual survival across every demographic you can imagine.”

For me that is a deep intrinsic belief not just a tenet of modern survival philosophy.  I may come across as fully convinced in my beliefs and passionate about them to the extreme but that doesn’t mean I wish to impose them on any other person.  So I decided I would simply let you guys know today about 10 of the “rules” that I follow in my life.  Some are very old for me, they have guided me since childhood, others I have gained in recent years on my walk as a modern survivalist…

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • Ignore politicians, do not however ignore their actions and resulting consequences
  • Truly understand in this order absolute needs, needs, comfort items, luxuries
  • Use anything that works, as long as it is ethical and actually works
  • Solve any problem you see in your head even if you can’t implement the solution
  • Be concerned with the survival of others, not just your own survival
  • Ask what if like a child, answer that question like an adult
  • Be extremely grateful to be alive in this time in history
  • Never violate your personal moral code of ethics
  • Never be led by fear specifically fear of losing something you don’t even have yet
  • Take pride in your phyical abilities but depend on your mental abilities
  • Learn from everything you do, the good, the bad and the failures
  • Never accept that things are simply just the way they are
  • Never feel you have anything coming to you and be grateful for what does
  • Never waste a minute on the past, live in the now and in the tomorrow

Episode-1269- You Are Your Only Solution

Like It Or Not, You Are Your Own Answer!

Like It Or Not, You Are Your Own Answer!

Day in and day out I get emails from listeners that mean well, but frankly most don’t get it.  They are emails about passing a law for this or that, as if that would really fix anything.  Franky I am at a point where the only laws that need be passed would be a law undoing an existing law.  Government and restrictions on liberty are the problems, hence stop looking for solutions from the people causing the problem.

Some sound good, such as, people that want to amend the constitution to say, “Congress shall make now law that “all laws made by Congress applying to citizens of the United States apply equally to members of Congress themselves”.  Sure that sounds good but you are saying, please let us ask the wolf and the fox to pass a law that says they can’t raid the hen house.  How likely is that to work?

It doesn’t help that this myth is attributed to Warren Buffet who first never said it and secondly shouldn’t be trusted any more then Barack Obama or George Bush, in other words not at all.  The government has created every single major problem it is currently trying to supposedly solve.  Let me be blunt you are NEVER EVER NEVER, going to see a world where our government becomes “good” or “smaller” or “less corrupt” unless it simply fails and even that is no guarantee of anything.  Sorry to tell you folks but you are your ONLY solution to any and all real problems that you and your family will face.

Join Me Today As We Discuss…

  • Stop worrying about the next disaster and see the one you are in right now
  • Stop being so pissed off about “rounding errors”
  • Why government not only won’t but can’t and never will fix our problems
  • Why you would not government to fix things even if it could
  • The lesson of your destitute, drunken, dope addicted “Uncle Sam”
  • What you must do to thrive in coming years
    • You are your own answer
    • You have to learn from boxers and MMA fighters, train before a fight!
    • But what about community, it isn’t just me is it
    • Take responsibility for your food
    • Take responsibility for your health
    • Take responsibility for your education
    • Take responsibility for your own waste
    • Take responsibility for your own energy
    • Do shit and never apologize for doing good shit!
    • Act because you want to, not due to fear

Episode-1241- The Possibilities of Abundance in Spite of Modern Self Destruction

Today I am going to talk about permacutlure from an entirely different angle then I have in the past.  What I mean is the concept that really makes permaculture brilliant isn’t swales, food forests and biogas energy.  No it is the concept that we can do the following…

Take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children and do so while not harming others, not harming natural systems and generate sufficient surplus for it to work.

That of course is taking the prime directive of permaculture and the three ethics and making one goal oriented sentence out of them.  I would ask you this though, as a modern survivalist, is that not exactly what we should all be working for.

Notice the above says nothing about growing plants, digging ditches, raising chickens or planting gardens.  Notice also there is nothing political about it, it is all about self responsibility, self governance and self directed decisions.  It begins with two words, “take responsibility” and once spoken those words leave no room to blame others, call on a government to fix a problem or sit around and hope that things get better.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • The ethics and directive as a life philosophy, what is it closest to?
  • Why people don’t understand permaculture, it doesn’t “fit” our way of thinking
  • Why growing food is what permaculture is most known for, but perhaps should not be
  • How much wealth is in a swale, how much in a tree or a pond
  • Why we need to understand that all wealth originates from natural systems
  • What is the real value of an hour of human labor
  • Why permaculture values off grid living so highly, security!
    • Lack of systemic dependence
    • Requires the creation of redundancy
    • Eliminates huge amounts of interference
    • Results in a “balanced” system
  • What does it mean if permaculture isn’t possible?

Episode-1238- Jenna Woginrich from The One Woman Farm

Jenna Woginrich - Of The One Woman Farm

Jenna Woginrich – Of The One Woman Farm

Jenna Woginrich is an author, homesteader, archer, and falconer-in-training. Two summers ago she left her corporate office gig to focus on the farm full-time and now runs a 6.5 acre homestead by herself south of the Adirondacks in Washington County, NY.

There she grows most of her own food; raises her own meat, dairy, veggies and eggs with the aid of animal power. Horses pull firewood from the forest, a sheepdog manages the livestock, hawks are trained to take small game, and carts and saddles are used as much as her dented pickup truck.

She’s passionate about self-reliance, martial arts, hunting, tracking, horses, and traditional and country skills. She’s also the business owner of Cold Antler Farm, an educational homestead where people travel from all over the world to take classes in everything from beginner fiddle to herbalism.

Her new book, One Woman Farm, has been described as follows by Joel Salatin, “Read this book to learn why farmsteads need to be loved.  Jenna’s One-Woman Farm is a jewel: small and lustrous.”

Episode-1214- Life After Awakening

Once you take the red pill, you can't go back, ever.

Once you take the red pill, you can’t go back, ever.

In the movie the Matrix the hero Neo is offered a choice by his mentor Morpheus,

“This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.”

The issue is, once you take that red pill and wake up into reality, you can never go back.  It is a fundamental change and the real horrors of the world along with the real beauty will forever be known to you.  While we are not in a world run by machines and used as batteries the metaphor of the movie is quite fitting.

The Original Blue Pill

Valium – Is The Blue Pill

We live in a world where the masses are the tools of the elite, the controls are taxes, debt, consumerism, marketing, leveraged jealously, class warfare and false dichotomy.  Once you see this, it is over, you can’t ever go back, just like Neo, take the red pill and you have made a permanent choice.

Then you have something interesting to contend with, the people around you are popping blue pills daily.  Most people hear blue pill and think of viagra, though it wasn’t popular when the story was created.  The most famous blue pill at the time the matrix was written, was, Valium.  Think about that!

Today We Discuss The Real Zombie Apocalypse, The One In Progress…

  • What is a zombie – this will shock you
  • Why it is a good thing to be awake
  • Why you should talk to the sleeping but not evangelize too much
  • Why some won’t wake up, ever, and why you must accept that
  • The truth about “the machine” and why you much change yourself
  • The biggest lies used to control you
    • Taxes are necessary
    • Debt is good, it is a status symbol
    • Having more things will make you happy
    • What your neighbor has or does effects you
    • The problems are all because of people who are different than you
    • The are two distinct sides and you have chosen the right one
  • What to do about it
    • Accept that the machine exists, exist as apart from it as you can
    • Focus first on your life, your families life, let the zombies sleep
    • Zombies wake up slow, use pull vs. push marketing
    • Know that what you do matters and act
    • Prepare for disaster and enjoy life at the same time

Episode-1210- Lessons in Homesteading by Taking a Big Step Backwards

Last Year's Abundance Won't Be Repeated This Year

Last Year’s Abundance Won’t Be Repeated This Year

Last year at this time, the wife and I were cutting up so many jalapenos that it took 3 days just to get them all ready for dehydration.  We had taken bag after bag of produce to the local church all summer long as the abundance was more than the two of us could us.

Neighbors who had previously shook their heads in slight mockery at our initial set up now shook their heads in awe at an abundance none had ever seen.  Into a rocky, granite ridden ridge top we had done something no one ever thought could be done.

Over 1,000 peppers in one harvest from 24 plants, yea we did that.  25 water melons from one 4×10 foot bed, did that too.  Trees rated to only zones 2-5 surviving in rock and granite in zone 7 with 100 degree days, yep, made it happen.

Yet as most of you know my wife was happy and unhappy at the same time.  The place was wonderful and she loved it.  Yet the separation from her family was more then she wanted to deal with.  So we made a decision to come to Texas.  Today a new challenge is unfolding in front of us.  Lots of work has been done, the foundation is largely set for next year but this year, well, it has been tough.  Today is about what that has taught me.

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • From abundance to starting over, the hash reality is mostly psychological
  • Why it is good for those who have done well to start over, it is called remembering
  • The unique challenges of our property and what they are teaching us
    • Less rain
    • Less soil in some ways
    • Damaged land is harder to work with
    • Everything doesn’t work everywhere
    • Animals are more work then I remember but more productive as well
    • You often don’t know as much as you think you do
  • The plans moving forward
    • Get the food forest main frame established in Spring 2014
    • Urban garden design in Oct. primary implementation over 6 months
    • 1500 gallon water catchment, done, expand by 1500 more
    • Develop permanent fencing for paddock shift of livestock
    • Develop large scale hugul systems on road frontage
    • Begin classes with better planing on more than just permaculture
    • Increase composting activities on all levels
    • When abundance is reached, don’t forget the reset challenges
    • In the mean time worry less about initial results

Episode-1199- Personal Libertarian Living Can it be Done

Many Are Actually Terrified of Freedom!

Many Are Actually Terrified of Freedom!

I call myself a personal libertarian.  What do I mean by that?  I mean that I simply accept society isn’t ready for some of the changes I have experienced in my life, they are not ready to be responsible for themselves.  Many people do want the governmetn to solve their problems.

I have seen it and not just from people living on welfare and off government jobs.  I have had intelligent and fairly successful people look me strait in the eye and say things like, “well if the government isn’t there to pass laws and solve our problems why are they there”.  That is indeed a great question, one we will answer today.

We will quickly though move from looking at how things should be to understanding how they are, from there we can determine how we can carve our own piece of libertarianism into our own lives.

Some might ask, “is this a survival topic”, I would say indeed.  Firstly, it is a fact that many of us know what lies ahead, many of the things provided by government are going to fail in time, math says it is invertible.  The middle class is being systematically slaughtered.   At some point much of what we take for granted will not be available.

When this happens a year of rice, beans and freeze dried food is a great asset but a finite one.  The reality is we all must begin a path to self sufficiency now, not wait for failure and then hope we have enough stuff stored up to make it until things return to normal.  There have been countless shifts in society, stabilization always follows eventually but thing never “return to normal” as that would mean returning to the way they were.

There is no philosophy that leads faster to self reliance than libertarianism.  There is no time to wait for others on it either, the time is now, today’s episode discusses my steps to attaining a personal libertarian life.

The Personal Libertarian Lifestyle

  • Believe and do as you please (with in the law)
  • Spread your belief by example, never with force
  • Create independence from the systems
  • Solve your own problems when ever you can, especially with neighbors
  • If you vote, vote for what you believe in, not who you think can win
  • Know why you believe what you believe
  • Accept challenges to what you believe but require facts
  • Never submit to government authority voluntarily (legally resist)
  • Create your own systems, your own networks, etc.
  • Value education and be a self directed learner at all times
  • Let no man speak for you or put words in your mouth
  • Accept that others many ignore, demean or attack you
  • Debate ideas, do not ague the validity of the individual
  • Remember no matter what anyone says, what you do matters

Episode-1180- How Preppers Can Save the Ideals of America

When people follow blind patriotism the worst deeds and ills of mankind become common place.  There is an old saying, “patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel” made famous by Samuel Johnson and today such patriotism is rampant.

War, poverty, fascism and more are all fine if you wrap it in the American flag.  So please don’t expect such flag waving drum beating in today’s show.  I don’t want to tell you what America is or even was but what it was promised to be.  I won’t lie to you and say that America will last forever, likely it won’t at least in its current form.

Yet there is an America that has tried to exist since she was founded, an America that lives up to the promises our founders made, and even they didn’t keep.  An America we can create if we choose to.  It is also possibly an America we might have to keep alive some day under another name.  We don’t know the future but we know that we alone are responsible to fulfill the promises of the past.

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • How exactly are all men created equal and how are they not
  • What are natural rights and why must they be recognized for liberty to exist
  • What might the future of our nation hold, will we be here in 100 years
  • Why is the promise of America, only a promise
  • Why is it important to know our failures and our faults
  • Why only preparedness can fulfill the promise of America
  • Why we must believe that the promise is possible

Episode-1038- Understanding the Coming Shifts in Society

Recently I have had to explain many times that TSP is not about “the end of the world” in the way prepping is portrayed in “Doomsday Preppers” and other such mass media things.  I don’t mean on the air, I mean in real life and in some email exchanges.  This is part of why I hate things like Doomsday Non Reality TV.

Thing is I don’t really care if someone thinks I am nuts.  Hell my business partner Neil Franklin calls me “Crazy Jack”.  The concern is that when prepping is presented as “extreme” to the masses it actually emboldens them to remain unprepared.  They look at this stuff and think “those people are nuts” and the natural response to take the show to be nothing more then entertainment like Jersey Shore of the bimbo Kardahians.

The reality is along with things like natural disasters which we have all witnessed many suffer the consequences of not being prepared for, we have a bigger issue.  The world is not going to end but it is shifting right now in many ways, today we are going to discuss that shift.

Join Me Today As We Discuss…

  • How we got here collectively
  • How we got here individually (more important)
  • Some Shifts we Must Understand
    • Population
    • Economics
    • Politics
    • Migration
    • Resource Competition
    • Long Term Cycles
  • Why these things will happen, not might happen
  • What we can do to prepare for them
  • Why we need to be prepared to help more then just “our own”
  • The community you are part of whether you want to be or not
  • Why there is a lot of hope in our future despite a lot of challenge

Episode-1011- What is Modern Survivalism Really All About

Learn from the past, live in the now, plan for the future

Learn from the Past, Live in the Now, Plan for the Future

Every day I get an email from some company that wants something from the TSP community.  They want to promote some new gadget or gizmo, on occasion it is something really new, cool and useful.   More often then not though it is some repackaged crap or over priced assembly of commonly available components.

Since I have told off just about every major network executive like those making the horrible crappy “Doomsday ________” shows they contact me less frequently but it still happens.  They are always looking to discuss the “end of the world” and do a good job of feigning false support of the idea.

Additionally of my 200-500 daily emails a good portion are new audience members that are in a huge state of fear.  Most just found out recently that everything isn’t okay and super and that real threats exist.  They are generally focused on one or two major threats and freaked out.  The ones who have been listening to Alex Jones are generally the worst.

These are three very different groups of people, but they all have the same problem, they don’t really know what real survivalism is all about.  Yep real survivalism, but I call it modern survivalism, today we discuss why.  In short to me, modern survivalism is a lifestyle that builds redundancy first around our needs, then around our wants and lastly around luxury so that we can live a better life.

Join Us Today As We Discuss…

  • The bullshit statement, “I am not a prepper I am a real survivalist”
  • What my real goals are for my nation and the rest of the world for that matter
  • Why reactionary prepping is dangerous and counter productive
  • How to decouple from fear based action
  • Balancing the reality of true threats with common sense
  • Why understanding needs is important
    • Food
    • Water
    • Shelter
    • Energy
    • Security
    • Sanitation and Health
  • Why living life effectively when times are good is the best form of preparedness
    • Insure your needs have redundancies
    • Build real wealth in every way you can
    • Bet neither on failure or success, either way you will lose
    • Develop skills and knowledge daily
    • Learn from others but don’t try to be who they are
    • Trust yourself more then anyone else, including me
    • Learn from the past, live in the now, plan for the future
