Episode-1097- How A Libertarian Society Would Function

We have had some pretty good discussions about libertarian concepts on the blog here in a very old article I posted almost 4 years ago.  I guess something  happened a lot of new people found it.  What I am coming to understand is many see libertarianism, objectivity and anarchism as the same things, they are not the same things.

Many how would ______ get accomplished questions about libertarianism don’t actually apply to minarchist libertarianism.  So today I am going to discuss how a society that is at least moving in the direction of libertarianism would function and how things would get done and how our lives would be better for it.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • On Libertarianism
    • What is a libertarian
    • How do we differ from democrats, independents and republicans
    • What do libertarians really want
    • What is the libertarian view of social issues like marijuana and gay marriage
    • Is there any room  for any form of taxation in a libertarian system
    • Could an “income tax” ever be fair
    • How would we run a food system in a libertarian system
    • How would we run a banking system in a libertarian system
    • How would we “build schools and roads” in such a system
    • What safety net would exist for the truly disadvantaged
    • How is this related to self sufficiency, self reliance and independence

Episode-1035- How I Would Personally Design a Sustainable Community

We just had Brian Newhouse on with a discussion on Permaville.  Since then I have been reading his book and while I like a lot of it, there are some compoenents I don’t agree with.  Such as having land “where no human may step”.

Though my view is if anyone buys land individually or collectively it is their land to do with as they please.  Hell there are definitely some parts of my heavily wooded 5 acres I haven’t stepped on, at least a few square feet of thick brambles or two.  Of course it is by choice, not decree.

This got me thinking that I have often described in pieces and parts what my vision for what we could call my own version of Permaville would be like but I have never described it deeply.   So I am going to do that today.  If you hear anything you think is “totally wrong” remember that anyone could build a community anyway they choose if you can find others to willing do it with you.

Just to be clear my ideas here would be for my community and any rules or ways of things confined to the borders of a privately held piece of land.  It is in no way how I think others should live.  When it comes to my day to day life I am a libertarian, but when it comes to my ideology, I am a voluntarist, please keep that in mind today.

Join Me Today As We Discuss…

  • My community would be started from scratch so all involvement is voluntary
  • There would only be 5 main rules
    • 1st rule would be individuals may use personal property as they choose, period
    • 2′nd rule would be people must attempt to solve problems directly first
    • 3′rd rule seek community arbitration before “contacting authorities”
    • 4th rule no one may harm another or take their property
    • 5th rule common areas have their own rules
  • The concept of private property and collective ownership
    • Each land unit is one “share” of the whole
    • Common areas are managed for community and commercial use
    • Community needs before commercial gain
    • Commercial gain is distributed based on share holdings
    • Expenditures and purchases are voted on by share holders
    • All “community dues” are voluntary
    • Community dues can be sweat, commodity or monetary
  • Functions, Goals and Operations
    • Individual home sites in the 1 acre range
    • Approximately 20% of total land should be common or infrastructure
    • Property should be as off grid as possible (about regulations not polar bears)
    • Lots are privately held and common areas are in a land based trust
    • Common areas are use for community production, education and commercial production

This isn’t a full picture just the basic components but I feel a society run this way would be tight nit, highly resilient and solve almost all of its own problems.   Someday I may formalize this into a book and call it Perma Libertyville.

Episode-849- Liberty is Alive and Well

I spend a lot of time on “individual liberty”.  I do so because I think the tide to turn government is so deep that it will take decades or longer to really change things.  Until such time I refuse to live in oppression so I have and will always teach that when it comes to liberty like many things, what you do matters is the number one component to success.

However being in New Hampshire for a few days with the crazy, radical, libertarian folks that call themselves the “Free Staters” has given me renewed hope as I watch how they are making progress at the personal level as well as at a systemic level.  Each member does their own thing, some are inside the system, some fully outside and others such as myself are working a bit in both worlds.

Join me Today as I Discuss…

  • Yes I am still a minarchist but have no further need to debate anarchists
  • You really can make a change at the state level
    • Over 12 State Reps are Freestaters
    • Many more backed by the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance
    • Over 1,000 people have moved as part of the FSP
  • Competing Currencies are Alive and Well
    • Lots of AOCS currency was in place
    • I understand bitcoin a lot better now
    • Shire Silver is onto something
    • TSP Copper will be back soon with even more options
  • People are waking up
    • Photography and video are making LEOs accountable
    • The local/real/etc food movement is hitting a critical mass
    • Many Free Staters were really taken in by “modern survivalism”
    • People in the FSP have each others back – BIG TIME
  • The impact on me
    • I likely won’t ever move to NH, but it could happen
    • My determination to fight is stronger than ever
    • My receptiveness to competing ideas is more open than ever
    • My view on currency isn’t different, it has however, expanded
    • The FSP is not “sponsored by” TSP
    • I will be back in NH next year

Reat Franlin's 8 Tenets at TheArtOfManliness.com

Recently I get a ton of emails on an article called. 8 Personal Finance Lessons from Benjamin Franklin that was published on the very cool blog, The Art of Manliness.

Several dozen of you told me that this article sounded like 8 things I say often on TSP.

So rather than read the article at all I decided to do the show based just on the 8 tenets of Franklin and see how much in sync we really are or are not.  One thing for sure old Ben’s advice seems quite timeless to me.

Join Me Today as we Discuss these 8 Pieces of Advice from one of Our Founders

  • Understand the true value of things
  • Be self-sufficient
  • Invest in yourself
  • Surround yourself with friends who share your values
  • Don’t compromise your integrity for money
  • Steady diligence is the way to wealth
  • Time is money (I have changed this to time is value)
  • The accumulation of money is an means to an end

Episode-751- Common Sense vs. Consumerism

Today I wanted to take a moment to take a look at the concept of consumerism and how it directly conflicts with the preparedness lifestyle.  Now don’t get me wrong I am a capitalist libertarian, I believe in the free market but I also believe in making informed consumer decisions.

Consumerism is the opposite of that, consumerism is a heard mentality where providers and producers spend time competing for existing market share and replacing products that are still functional.  An informed consumer market requires producers and providers to innovate and create better longer lasting products and services.

Join me today as I discuss…

  • Early Retirement Extreme – a book that got me thinking this way
    • Are we in a “climax stage” as in Permaculture
    • Are companies innovating or competing in existing markets
    • Working Man v. Salary Man v. Business Man v. Renaissance Man
  • How our grandparents evaluated a purchase of a product
    • Do I need it
    • Does anything I have fill the role now
    • How long will it last
    • What will it do for me and my family
    • How long must I work to pay for it
    • If I don’t buy it what difference will it really make
  • How companies market products today
    • Can we create a fad/cult following around it
    • What existing market share can we capture with it
    • Can we build a market to sell subsequent products to
    • Is it a consumable or designed to fail
    • How cheaply can we manufacture it
    • Can we outsource most of the work
    • Will it last long enough to avoid returns
    • Can we sell it for less than the competition
    • Or can we justify a premium at little to no internal cost
  • How do we avoid the consumerist trap and still have fun and cool stuff
    • Avoiding debt solves most of the problems
    • Have a 48 hour waiting period on major purchases
    • Ask the questions our grandparents did

Episode-680- 14 Steps to the Personal Libertarian Lifestyle

Every day it seems I get information from people about more encroachment by government on individual rights, wide spread government and private sector surveillance etc.  As I look around sometimes it feels that liberty is dying and on some levels the average person couldn’t care less.   It is a depressing thought and one I don’t allow to take root because I view it as an emotional cancer.

Liberty isn’t a life form it is a way of life!

Liberty cannot die, it can only be forgotten, ignored, scorned or attacked but an idea can never die as long as one person has the courage or even the potential to remember it.  So my belief is while our population is not currently interested in liberty as a whole, there is hope and there are many of us who are.  It is up to us to live in liberty in spite of the system around us.

Join me today as we discuss…

  • The real beauty of libertarianism
  • The current threats to liberty
    • Debt/Taxes
    • Surveillance/Intrusion
    • Apathy
    • Libertarians living in defeat
  • The Personal Libertarian Lifestyle
    • Believe and do as you please (with in the law)
    • Spread your belief example, never with force
    • Create independence from the systems
    • Solve your own problems when ever you can
    • Vote for what you believe in, not who you think can win
    • Know why you believe what you believe
    • Accept challenges to what you believe but require facts
    • Never submit to government authority voluntarily (legally resist)
    • Create your own systems, your own networks, etc.
    • Value education and be a self directed learner at all times
    • Let no man speak for you or put words in your mouth
    • Accept that others many ignore, demean or attack you
    • Argue ideas, do not ague the validity of the individual
    • Remember no matter what anyone says, what you do matters

Today we examine liberty to truly understand what we are working for with self sufficient lifestyles.  Liberty seems like a simple concept at first, are you free or not?  But what really defines freedom, what really is the difference between liberty and captivity and are their shades of gray that deceive us?

  1. Liberty can not exist in a pure democracy
  2. Liberty can not be defined except by the one experiencing it
  3. Government can not create liberty only defend it
  4. Liberty is about equal opportunity not equal results
  5. Liberty must be defended by the individual

Episode-626- Prepping from Starting Out to Advanced Tactics

Food Storage is One Major Component of Survival

Food Storage is One Major Component of Survival. - Photo Credit to Linda & Clark via flickr

With the disaster in Japan I am getting a lot of emails from brand new people and long time listeners, the basic question is “what should we do”?  Well this may be hard for you to believe given the non stop media coverage of the burning reactor but the answer is, unless you are in Japan you should probably not do anything.  That said getting out of Japan unless you are part of the relief efforts probably isn’t a bad idea.

You certainly shouldn’t go spend 100 dollars for a bottle of potassium iodine on eBay because you will be able to get all you want for about 15 bucks a bottle in about a month, there is really nothing for you to do, perhaps other than make a contribution to the relief efforts in Japan.

What we all should be doing right now personally is using this current disaster as a gut check of sorts.  Rather than worry about some fictitious cloud of death, that just isn’t going to happen you should be asking the following.  What would it have meant to me had this disaster occurred in California or New York?  What if it had just been a tsunami, just a nuclear accident or just an earth quake but had happened much closer to me, would I have been prepared enough to shelter in place or get out of dodge?

With that in mind I think it is time we take a show to go back and just talk about prepping in general, the tenets of preparedness and self evaluation of how we would handle a disaster that wasn’t thousands of miles away.

Join me today as we discuss…

  • Why now is not the time to panic but to plan
  • Why 30 days is the absolute minimum amount of food you should have on hand
  • Why having a means of water purification is more important than water storage
  • Why you need both lethal and non lethal methods of self defense
  • Getting started with personal energy independence
  • Understanding how most people are enslaved by the systems
  • Realizing the link between liberty and prepping

Episode-544- Five Lies that Attack Individual Liberty

Today we have a rebroadcast of a show I did back in August 27th, 2008.  I decided this would be a good show to have on during my absence to Arkansas where I am laying wood flooring getting ready for our move there this winter. I want you to think about some of these things in contrast with the so called “historic election” that just occurred yesterday.  My belief is until some of these underlying issues no matter who is in charge we will get the same results with a different marketing message.   Today’s podcast may challenge some of your beliefs and might even make you angry at times. That just means is isn’t the same old – same old.

Keep in mind that this show was done in 2008 before the economic crash when all the talking heads were telling us that things were going to be just fine and countless advisors were telling people to buy Bank of America stock because it had dropped in price due to “guilt by association”.

Tune in to get my thoughts about,

  • The lie that “its a consumer driven economy and there is nothing wrong with that” and how it is driving people and our nation into the oppression of debt.
  • The lie of “no child left behind” and that “everyone should go to college” and how it is destroying our economy and making us dependent on illegal immigrant labor
  • The noble professions no one goes to college to do and why we need quality people to do them
  • The lie that “The Constitution gives us rights” and how that lie grants government power that it does not and should not have
  • Why The Constitution does not “apply to Americans” and how it actually applies to humans
  • The lie of class warfare and how it convinces you that you don’t have what you want because of some other group
  • The class structure of Europe that we left behind and why it needs to stay there
  • The lie that “you can’t do it” or “you can’t make it” with out government help and how the government is actually the problem that limits individual achievement
  • The lie of being told what you want or told what is a success or a failure or what you need
  • Why no matter who runs Washington we all still have the ability to declare individual liberty
  • How we lost the attitude of “this family doesn’t take charity” and how that is killing us
  • How the individual spirit and personal fortitude is stronger then any law, government or situation
  • How many of the “poor” are really free and many of the most “successful” are enslaved by life and debt
  • How your personal action, personal spirit and determination are your greatest survival asset
