Dr Christopher’s Complete Tissue and Bone Ointment – Item of the Day

drchrisEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Dr Christopher’s Complete Tissue and Bone Ointment.  While I have often made my own comfrey ointment by simply infusing olive oil with dried comfrey root and leaf, and then thickening it with bees wax, this particular formula really works well.

I feel it is the combination of other ingredients that make something great like comfrey salve, even better.  As many of you know I severely injured my knee so bad I was on crutches for a week, a few years ago.  There was severe straining to both my MCL and LCL to the point where I could not even bear weight on it.

Upon returning from my trip I began using this and in two days went from crutches to a cane, one more week and I put the cane away.  I wore a knee brace for another week, and by then was walking normal.  This stuff doesn’t just help you heal from injuries it also reduces pain.  And that is almost instant.

One day my daughter-in-law was breaking out with a nasty rash due to post pregnancy hormones.  She was almost in tears as it was so uncomfortable.  I suggested that they apply a bit of this, to one area to test it.  The rash went away, almost at once, so they used it where ever she had the rash and 15 minutes later she was happy and content.

I am not saying this stuff treats or cures things, as the dot gov says I can’t say such a thing.  All I can tell you is our results have been fantastic.  And that the healing power of comfrey is well known and well documented, in fact its traditional folk medicine name is “bone knit”.

I have been recommending this highly on the air for a quite a few years at this point and have heard from dozens of you guys who have used it on abrasions, bruised ribs, twisted ankles, etc. with great results.  I really recommend that as a prepper you keep a jar or two of Dr Christopher’s Complete Tissue and Bone Ointment on hand all the time.  It is too valuable not to, and if you live in the south like I do it is only a matter of when not if you will have an encounter with fire ants.  Let me say nothing I have ever used on a fire ant bite, well bites it is never just one is it, works as fast or as good as this stuff.

I know a lot of you guys have used this stuff so let me know your results in the comments below.  Also most of the negative reviews on Amazon say that “it is hard”, I know I should not have to say this, but that is because it is made with WAX, put it somewhere a bit warm if it is hard to work with, it will soften right up.

Frontier Co-op Organic Valerian Root – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Frontier Co-op Organic Valerian Root.  Before we continue due to the content below I have to give a disclaimer, I am not a doctor, I don’t even pretend to be one on TV.  While I am a life time user of herbs, I am also not a certified herbalist, nothing I am about to say should be seen is medical or nutritional advice.  It is just my personal experience.

So about two years ago I set out to create a “bed time tea”, my goal was a tea that would set the mind at ease and get you to sleep fast.  I built this tea on valerian root for many reasons.  You can find a wide range of Valerian’s uses at Web MD, chief among them though are insomnia and relaxing muscles and relieving aches and pains.

Now there are a ton of teas out there with Valerian in it, but I like to mix my own teas, simply put buying herbs in bulk saves money and you can make custom blends.  Last week I mentioned in my interview with herbalist Cat Ellis that I had a “night time tea that tasted like gym socks but would knock you flat out” and that resulted in a ton of requests for the recipe.

So I decided to feature Valerian today and give away that recipe, all but two ingredients can be purchased at Amazon, I’ll give a few sources for them in the P.S. below.  Note that the parts below are by volume, not weight…

I make this tea at about 2 heaping tablespoons to the cup, note that this doesn’t taste good.  Frankly it isn’t that bad, I am setting the expectation bar low however, unlike my other teas you are not drinking this one for the flavor.  I do sweeten this one with honey.

I can’t explain this but if you want this tea to work my best results seem to come from going to bed within 30 minutes or less of consuming it. If you wait much longer the effects seem to change to relaxed but alert.  However, if you go strait to bed you generally crash and sleep solid though the night, at least I do.

It also for me seems to increase the vividness of my dreams.  Note that I am a long time student of lucid dreaming and have trained myself to recognize dreams and awaken within them.  This is beyond the scope of this review but there is lots of info online about doing it.   I will talk just a tiny bit about it in today’s on air IOTD segment.

So if you want to give this a try, you can simply mix it up and give it a go, but I will caution that I take no regular medications and I don’t know what interactions these herbs could have with pharmaceuticals.  So please check with your doctor before using these are any herbs if you have any physical conditions or side effects.  Again I am not a doctor or certified herbalist, I am not giving medial advice, I am just telling you my personal experiences.

So check out Frontier Co-op Organic Valerian Root today.

P.S. – The herb you can’t get on Amazon for some reason is Damiana Leaf.  You can make the tea without it, it will still work.  That said it is a wonderful herb that in my view really enhances this tea.  If you skip the Damiana increase the Valerian to 4 parts to rebalance the recipe a bit.

P.S.S.  Here is a simplified recipe if you just want to give it a try without all the other herbs.  Go with 2 parts of Valerian to 1 part of mint.  This will be a quite sedative tea and aid in falling asleep for many people.  Again I recommend hitting the pillow no more than 30 minutes after consuming it.

The Herbal Medicine Makers Handbook by James Green – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the book, The Herbal Medicine Makers Handbook, A Home Manual by James Green.  If I had to rely on only one book on medicinal herbs and their use it would be this book.

This book is hard to describe in a way as it is almost a dichotomy in itself.  On one hand it is extremely easy to read and highly approachable.  The author starts out with a true project/lesson.  Making a dandelion tincture.  The author does this for a variety of reasons.  First, almost anyone can find dandelion to harvest locally.  Second, the herb is inherently safe to use.  Third, the herb is easy to identify and no dangerous plant even looks remotely like a dandelion.  Fourth, by getting you started with a project out of the gate you gain confidence as you proceed with the book.

This book is written by a guy that uses both humor and humility and never tries to sound smart, he just ends up sounding really smart, because well, he is.  This is not a guy that decided one day that “oh I should gather up some information and write a book about herbs”, rather a man that lives this way who decided to canonize his knowledge into an incredible book.  Yet it is kept incredibly simple with the majority of it based on a core of 30 common herbs.

Then there is the other side.  While easy to read and approachable, this is really like a full course text book on herbal medicines.  Want to know how to make your own simple still from what you likely already have in your home to make a hydrosol?  Well first would you like to know what a hydrosol is and how to use it?  You will learn both in this book.  How about making and using glycerite and 20 herbs that work well in that form?  Yep you will learn that too.  Take the time and work though this book, all 384 pages of it, make at least 2-3 products of every form given and it is like taking a self directed course in herbalism.

One thing to be aware of for some.  The author sort of crosses into the world of shamanism/paganism at times, sayig things like,

“Now that you have properly identified and graciously harvested this plant, offer gratitude one again for its life.  Consider leaving an offering, like a strand of your hair, a prayer, a song, a story, whatever; plant spirits are known to be deeply touched by simple gestures of appreciation.”

While this may be a bit off putting for some, I’d like to point out two things here.  First that showing gratitude is good for our spirits, no matter how you define spirit.  Whether a religious prayer before a meal or simply a thought of I am grateful for this food from a secular perspective, either one builds good character and self reflection.

Second I remember a documentary on Amazon peoples where the tribe decided they needed a new canoe.  A tree was selected and one man selected to fell the tree.  The man said a prayer and spoke to the tree, he apologized for needing to take its life.  He explained that his people would honor the tree’s sacrifice, that the canoe and other parts would serve his people for several generations.  That they would plant a tree from this trees own seed in its place and make sure it was protected so it could grow into a strong tree.

That had to be 25 years ago and I have yet to forget that moment and the words that man said to a tree.  Call such a man a primitive if you want but how much more forest would exist if all trees cut for our needs were cut with such reverence.  Also think about this, that man was about to spend a full day of manual labor to cut that huge tree down.  No chain saws in his tribe and yet he met the task with humility.

So yea there is some woo woo in this book but nothing over the top in my view.  What you get is quality instruction, a true course in home herbal medicine making and concise information to make this practice safe and effective.  Again, if I could only have one book on herbal medicine it would be The Herbal Medicine Makers Handbook, by James Green.

Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes.  I have tried a variety of different products for this need and have settled on these.  As many of you know we have three dogs.  A giant German Shepard named Max, a Pit-Pointer Mix named Charlie and a Pitskey named Lucy.  A Pitskey is a Siberian Husky crossed with a Pit Bull by the way.

I use this product on all of them.  They get a good ear cleaning on the first of the month when they get their heart worm medication.  Simple and easy to remember.  For Charlie and Lucy this is all they need.  Generally a bit of gunk comes out of both of them but it isn’t much.  Their ears stay clean and don’t put off any odors at all.

Max though has always been a problem pup when it comes to his ears, and worse he doesn’t really like having them cleaned.  I don’t know if you have ever tried to get a 150 pound dog to do something he doesn’t want to do, but it is a hell of a case for good training.  Charlie and Lucy seem to actually enjoy getting their ears cleaned but not Max, it is like dealing with a pouting puppy every time.

But we get it done and it works.  Before I found these I had to clean his ears about 1-3 times a week, depending on the time of the year.  Some nights he’d wake me up shaking his head because his ears bothered him badly.  I’d have to get up and deal with his sulking and clean his ears at 2Am.

Now I simply clean Max’s on the 1st and 15th and even he seems to remain clear, happy and free of the dreaded “stinky ear”.  As the label indicates they use a combination of Aloe and Eucalyptus oil.

This certainly is not some beyond organic all natural product and it has some conventional ingredients but nothing I consider truly harmful and above all they work.  And they work damn good.  The price is right at 8 dollars for 100 pads and at my use rate one pack of 100 lasts me about a year.  Note that they may not last as long for you if you have more dogs of a pup with a real problem needing a lot more cleaning.

On Max this is what I did, when I got them I cleaned his ears once a day for a week, he was not happy about this.  I then went to once a week for a month, then went to my routine of twice a month.  I have been doing that now for about 4 months and he has stayed a happy and clean eared canine.

Anyway if you want to keep your packs ears in top notch shape, I recommend checking out Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes today.  I think you will quickly see why they have 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 330 reviews along with an A grade on Fakespot.

Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser.  I got a lot of questions about a diffuser for essential oils after one of my podcasts on getting started with herbalism.  Essential oils are one of my favorite way to use herbs, to understand why let me explain what a REAL essential oil is.

You know when you walk but a hedge of roses when the sun is hitting them and you get that amazing smell, when that happens you are experiencing essential oils in nature.  An oil is “essential” in the sense that it contains the “essence of” the plant’s fragrance—the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived.

Essential oils are made by distillation and it takes a lot of an herb to produce a small amount of oil. For instance to make a pound of lavender essential oil you will need about 200 pounds of lavender flowers to do so.  And lavender is pretty heavy as many herbs go, for instance if you want a pound of rose oil it will take 2000-5000 pound of roses to do the job depending on the rose type.

Want a pound of oregano essential oil, well you’ll need about 1,000 pounds of oregano to get the job done.  Bringing it down a bit smaller, if you want say one ounce of peppermint oil you will need only about 5 lbs of peppermint.  Or if you want just an ounce of that oregano oil you will still need about 60-65 pounds of fresh oregano.

This is why essential oils can seem expensive, and this is why when you see an essential oil and it is cheap, it likely isn’t pure essential oil and you should not buy it.

So why a diffuser, what does that do for you?  Sure it makes the house smell nice but are there any other real benefits.  Okay before I continue, to protect myself from the almighty dot gov, I have to say, I am not a doctor, nothing that follows is intended to cure, prevent or treat disease, it is only my opinion.  Ya gotta love our freedom in this nation don’t ya?

So here it goes, I feel that one of the first things a diffuser can do is promote more restful sleep.  This is critical to health in my opinion for obvious reasons.  Diffusers have also been shown to improve respiratory health and when used with some herbs boot natural immune responses.    I personally find they improve my mental focus and clarity especially when I am distracted.

Additionally many essential oils are antivirals, antibiotics, antiseptics, etc.  so they help kill germs and bacteria.  Finally they are just beneficial to your overall emotional health in my opinion.  In fact I think a lot of people on dangerous medications would be better off using essential oils and a bit of daily relaxing and meditation, or at least give that a try before committing to a life time of using a drug with more side effects than benefits according to the people that make it.

Now why the Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser .  I mean there are literally thousands of models why this one.  First check the reviews, frankly I am getting depressed with how many effing fake ass reviews are on Amazon, especially with any electronic product, but not this one.  5500 reviews, 4.5 stars over all and an A Grade on Fakespot.com.

Next looks, I mean this thing just looks nice.  It doesn’t look like some weird space age thing or some funky medical device, it is well suited to be in any home and match any rooms look and feel.  The lights are nice and make it look cool as well, but that doesn’t personally do much for me.  I do love that it has a built in timer and that it is very easy to set, in fact all the controls are very intuitive.

Lastly it just works, again as always I am out for a solid value to price ratio.  This one has it.  So check out the Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser today, it really will make you feel better in my view and guys, damn cool gift if I do say so myself.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – I know there will be a ton of “what oils should I get”.  I really tend to buy a specific oil for a specific reason.  I use oregano because it is such a great anti viral, I use peppermint because it makes you mentally clear and frankly I just like it, etc.  But there is no harm in experimenting.  So as you learn about an herb, just get some good oil of it and try it out.  However as a great starter set this one is really good, It comes with 16 Essential Oils.

You will get 18 oils to try including, lavender, tea tree, peppermint, lemongrass, sweet orange, eucalyptus, pine, tangerine, rosemary, frankincense, lime, lemon, bergamot, patchouli, grapefruit and cinnamon.  The cost on this set is only 36 bucks and added to the diffuser it really does make an awesome gift I think anyone would appreciate.

Gaia Herbs Echinacea Goldenseal Propolis Throat Spray

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Gaia Herbs Echinacea Goldenseal Propolis Throat Spray.  I just used this product for the past week and I am more than a little impressed.

This spray is made of three main ingredients and all are immune boosting power houses.  Of course due to the dot gov I have to say the following.  First I am not a Doctor, I don’t even pretend to be one on TV, like say Dr. Oz does.  So anything I say in this review or at any time is only my personal opinion, not a prescription for the use of any products.  Any claims about what they do are based on credible sources with citations of said sources.  The claims are not my own.

Anyway here are the three ingredients…

    • Echinacea – Has been shown in some studies to boost immune response, reduce the occurrence of the common cold and increase white blood cell count.  Source – The Lancet
    • Goldenseal – Has been shown to have a number of immune enhancing effects in clinical studies. However, in relation to this product the most important component is likely that goldenseal contains, “phytochemical alkaloids that produce a powerful astringent effect on mucous membranes, reduce disease-causing inflammation and have antiseptic effects.”  Source – DrAxe.com
    • Propolis – Propolis does has proven antibiotic and antiseptic properties and may also have antiviral and anti-inflammatory – Source DrWeil.com

I personally feel this product is best used as a preventative or at the very first signs of a head cold, throat problems etc.  My personal results were quite good, but my use was delayed far more than it should have been.  I had been dealing with symptoms for about four days before beginning using it, laryngitis as you know if you listen to the show had set in pretty hard, I was having trouble sleeping due to sinus drainage etc.

I had used a spray in the past that was mostly just echinacea which had worked well but I realized I was out of it and that it is no longer made.  So I found this option gave it a shot.  Echinacea is well known in the herbal world as an immune booster, as is goldenseal. Both are used often by herbalists and are well thought of.

What I really loved though was the addition of propolis, propolis is basically “bee glue”.  Bees make propolis to seal up any unwanted holes in their hives.  This is one reason it is an anti viral and anti biotic, it is simply evolution that bees came up with this as it helps protect their hives.

Here is what even WebMD has to say about propolis…

Propolis has a long history of medicinal use, dating back to 350 B.C., the time of Aristotle. Greeks have used propolis for abscesses; Assyrians have used it for healing wounds and tumors; and Egyptians have used it for mummification….

Propolis is used for canker sores and infections caused by bacteria (including tuberculosis), by viruses (including flu, H1N1 “swine” flu, and the common cold), by fungus, and by single-celled organisms called protozoans. Propolis is also used for cancer of the nose and throat; for boosting the immune system; and for treating gastrointestinal (GI) problems including Helicobacter pylori infection in peptic ulcer disease. Propolis is also used as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

In short if it is good enough for Aristotle I figure it is good enough for me.  Anyway my results again were quite good, I got my voice back sooner than expected.  The bottle advises three sprays to the back of the throat each hour when you have a cold or throat problems, that is what I did.

I tend to deal with a lot of cold issues this time of year, the combination of the changing seasons, travel, large events, etc. seems to be a common theme in such things.  I plan to use this 2-3 times a day while well though this season this year and see how it works.

It seems like a natural preparedness item as it will store well and is made of three well known immune supporting components.  What about the taste though?  Well let me relate a story, one time I cam in from working though I had not worked that hard.  I told the wife I think I need a shower and she said as follows, “well you don’t smell bad, but you don’t smell good either”.  That is a perfect description of the taste, “the taste isn’t bad, but it ain’t good either”.  It does have a bit of heat to it, so that might make it harder to get kids to use.  It goes away fast though.

The burn is likely because this product is a herbal tincture meaning it is a concentrated herbal formula using alcohol, about 60% alcohol in this instance balanced by water.  The amount in a few sprays is insignificant in alcohol’s effects on the body but I did want to let you know that it has alcohol in it since some of you refrain from any and all uses of said same.

Anyway Gaia Herbs Echinacea Goldenseal Propolis Throat Spray has found a home in my herbal tool kit and my winter regime.  Consider adding it to your home this year.  I think this one is going to be on par with Dr. Christopher’s Tissue and Bone for happy stories from the audience.  Yes it seems to be that good.

Miracle of Aloe Heel Stick – Item of the Day

heelstickEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Miracle of Aloe Heel Stick.  I am pretty skeptical when I see any health and wellness product marketed as a “miracle” but after trying this one, I am okay with them claiming it.

I have always struggled with dry heels and sometimes they crack, but when we started actually farming and I dealt with farm work coupled with North Texas very dry winters, it got really bad.  I tried a few things and NOTHING and I mean NOTHING came close to how well this worked.

Not only does it work but this packaging is the perfect solution to simple application.  Most other products have to be put on with your fingers, this results in your hands being coated in thick lotion like product.  I for one dislike this a great deal.  Then you have to wash it off because if you touch anything, it gets all over it.

With this stick approach, I put on my socks up to my heel, apply it, pull the sock up and done.  Clean hands, no wasted product and man this stuff works and works great.  So if you or someone you love suffers from dried or cracked heels give the Miracle of Aloe Heel Stick a try, you won’t regret.

P.S. – For those with diabetes this type of injury can have severe consequences an I think this product is even more important to know about.

Healing Solutions Peppermint Essential Oil – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Healing Solutions Peppermint Essential Oil.  I am a huge fan of essential oils for many uses and I personally consider peppermint the most versatile of them all.

I want to point out that I am not making any medical claims or saying that this stuff cures or treats any disease.  Happy now you G-men?  I just will tell you what I tend to use it for myself and what my results have been.

The two main things I use it for are occasional head aches, specifically stress related ones and sinus issues.  For instance right now I have some sort of a head cold and can barely breathe though my nose.  I just sniff the bottle and soon get some relief from the congestion.  I also take my finger and put it on the top and just moisten it with the oil,  quick wipe under my nose on each side and I get continued relief.

Often with head aches, especially when one is just starting if I take a few sniffs or this stuff it mitigates it or simply shuts it down before it even gets started.  Again peppermint is likely the most versatile essential oil there is, in fact here is an article with 25 great uses for peppermint essential oil you can check out.

If you are new to essential oils you may want to consider trying them out with an infuser, this is my favorite one of those, it is also an Amazon best seller.  I will be doing a full show on essential oils later this year but for now consider adding Healing Solutions Peppermint Essential Oil to your preps.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. –  While this product brand is GREAT so are most true essential oils.  What is a true essential oil, it is undiluted pure oil from the source plant.  In general just by reading the ingredients you can verify that it is a pure oil.    I chose this brand because I had run out and this cold set in, and it was on free one day delivery,  after using it I can say it is as good as ny other quality oil I have used.
