Episode-451- Seven Underrated Centerfire Rifle Calibers

I need a bit of a fun change up today after the recent server issues (which are now solved for a while) so I though I would break out with some lesser known rifle calibers.  In out current world shooting seems to revolve around the 223, 308, 30-06, 30-30 and a host of the magnums.  Sure there are quite a few 270s, 7mm-08s and 243′s out there too but what about the other roughly 500 cartridges, is there any place left for the oddball or the old classic that is no longer innovative?

Join me today as we discuss…

  • Why even break the mold, do we really need more then a dozen solid center fires
  • The “common caliber myth” why the common calibers will dry up first not last in a crisis
  • Why reloading should be part of your skill set and how it mitigates any “odd” caliber
  • What is a “wild cat” cartridge
  • What does “burn rate” have to do with velocity
  • The 22 Hornet – at one time it was the varmint round
  • The 25-06 – a true “magnum” with out the punishment
  • The 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser – the little round that has killed millions of Moose
  • The 280 Remington – every bit the game getter of the 7MM mag without the abuse
  • The 338-06 – the perfect medium bore cartrige
  • The 44 Magnum – yes it is for rifles too
  • The 45-70 – an old solider that won’t die nor fade away

Episode-446- The Shotgun from Home Defense to Upland Game

Today we take a look at the weapon I consider to be the most versatile of all modern fire arms, the shot gun.  To day we will examine the common gauges, the shotguns versatility, defensive vs. sporting use and more.  The shotgun is mysterious to some and misleading to others, in the end it is simply a tool and the more you know about it the more you can get from it.

    • Shot size – what it means and common use
    • The charge – the creator of velocity (black powder?)
    • Shot weight – exactly how many pellets are on the way
    • Shot types – lead, steel and tungsten
    • Buck shot – Reality vs. myth
    • Magnums – Is longer better?
    • The cost of “heavy”
  • A quick review of the 10, 12, 16, 20 and 410 shotguns
  • Actions
    • The single shot
    • The double (side by side and O/U)
    • The pump
    • The semi auto
    • The bolt action (a surprisingly fun weapon)
  • All about chokes
  • Barrel lengths – myth vs. reality
  • Stock length – proper fit for the proper function
  • Sporting clays – like golf with a bang
  • Thoughts on home defense applications
  • Thoughts on “combat” applications
  • The beauty of the shot gun

Episode-423- Thoughts on the Use of Deadly Force

I get a ton of questions on “guns for survival situations”, “handguns for self defense”, the “best knife if you need to defend yourself with a blade” and more like that all the time.  Of course I believe in being armed to what ever level your local laws allow, I am all for defending yourself with lethal force if you need to and I do think being trained with your weapons is a great idea.    Yet the number of such questions has led me to ask do people really think about the ramifications of being faced with a lethal force situation?

Join me today as we discuss…

  • The two never discussed myths about killing from Hollywood
  • Fantasies about a “Red Dawn” like scenario
  • The is no glory in death, for the killer or the killed
  • Your gun may be highly ineffective if you are the one being attacked
  • Cover, concealment and movement
  • Home defense, put awareness on your side
  • Handguns are for times when you can’t carry a rifle or shotgun
  • A knife is a terrible weapon for an honorable man (listen before you object)
  • You do not know if you are really capable of pulling the trigger, until you have to
  • You can’t discount the long term effects of winning in a lethal conflict

Episode-416- Dealing With Violent Confrontations

After spending a week with Val Riazanov on systema and Russian martial arts and filming the new DVD series I thought it might be a good day to do a show on dealing with potentially violent confrontations.

Join me today as we discuss…

  • First a correction on my error from yesterday – the RRR is NOT a private army
  • Real violence vs. movie violence
  • The morals of the criminal, he has none
  • Professional = death when it comes to killing
  • The first rule is avoiding the confrontation
  • If you can’t avoid it focus on deescalation
  • If deescalation fails at times controlled retreat is the best option
  • You should always appear relaxed and “harmless”
  • When you do strike it must be with sufficient force for the situation
  • Pressure points are useless in full speed combat, anatomy points are critical
  • The “systema strike” – misunderstood and highly effective
  • Dealing with an armed opponent takes things to another level
  • The knife is the oldest consistently deadly weapon for a reason
  • In dealing with an opponent with a gun 1.5-2 meters is “critical distance”
