Episode-1148- Tom Stearns of High Mowing Organic Seeds

tomstearns

Tom Stearns of High Mowing Organic Seeds

Tom Stearns began gardening at an early age at his family home in CT.  Prior to completing a degree in Sustainable Agriculture from Prescott College in AZ, he began saving seeds.  A hobby was born in 1996 in Vermont, when Tom began sharing these seeds with others through a small seed flyer.

Today High Mowing Organic Seeds has since expanded into one of the leading organic seed companies in the U.S., supplying both home gardeners and commercial growers.  Tom’s vision has always been to create a company that would help support the re-building of healthy food systems, first in Vermont, followed by the rest of the U.S.

He has also taught numerous workshops since 1996 on many topics such as ag. education, economics, community supported agriculture, genetic engineering, plant breeding, local food systems, sustainable business, investing and more.  His informal, personal style, ability to explain complex issues and infectious enthusiasm makes him a popular and inspiring speaker.

In addition, he has served on the board of several agricultural organizations, most notably as the current President of The Center for an Agricultural Economy since 2008.  He lives on 50 acres in Vermont, with his wife Heather, and their two girls, Ruby and Cora.

Tom joins us to discuss beyond fighting GMO’s and moving past the things that we don’t like and how to start building the things we want.  We begin by discussing why seeds matter so much in the first place. How we lost control of our seeds as a socitety and how individuals, how can get started saving seeds easily.

We also discuss how seed self-reliance contribute to building healthy communities and individual sovereignty.   We also go beyond seed saving and discuss how to breed varieties for the food systems that we want.  We also do discuss some of the true dangers of GMO foods and how they actually contribute to bad agricultural practices and the destruction of soils.

Episode-1054- The How, What and Why of Saving Seeds

There is Magic Within Seeds but Saving Them Isn't Mystical

There is Magic Within Seeds but Saving Them Isn’t Mystical

I was talking with Ben Falk of Whole Systems Design yesterday about how more and more small seed companies are now buying at least some seed from companies associated with the ilk of Monsanto.

Ben was pretty shocked to hear the Johnny’s Selected Seeds is buying some of their seeds from Semanis, which is owned by Monsanto.

There is a lot of fear about GMO contamination both legitimate and ridiculous specifically when the word Monsanto comes up.

The best solution is to save your own seeds but we are going to also discuss how to know who you can trust when buying seeds and times where you simply do not have to worry about GMO at all.

Join me today to hear about…

  • What is “the safe seed pledge” and why should you care
  • Why we need to be saving seeds in the first place
  • Breeding improvements vs. hybrids vs. GMO (all three are different)
  • Exchanging seeds – a great form of barter
  • The easy plants to save seed from – beans, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes
  • Separation rules – why they exist and not stressing them
  • Staggering pollination times to create effective separation
  • Herbs and unusual plants are often easy to save for and over looked
  • Storing your seeds once they are harvested (is cold storage a good idea)
  • How to clean your seeds, what you need, what you don’t need
  • Growing your own hybrids – hybrids are not always bad
  • How to hand pollinate and ensure purity with squashes and melons, etc
  • Saving root crops like garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes for replanting
  • The rewards of regionally adapted plants
  • Breeding for any and all traits, it really isn’t hard

Today we discuss, fear, HOAs, responsible law enforcement, GMOs, drugs in our water supply, common sense and the destruction of the resiliency of our children .

Please understand I receive several hundred emails a day and can’t get them all on the air. I do put out a lot of information on Facebook from emails that I can’t fit on the program though so keep em coming.

Join Me Today As I Respond to Your Emails On

  • The real reason people say “screw others” during a disaster – FEAR
  • More proof that HOAs actually destroy true community
  • Proof that we need more LEOs kicking the ass of their fellow LEOs
  • The wonderful results of GMOs – Parkinson’s Disease
  • The Muscovy Duck low input of grain for a high output of meat

Episode-613- Listener Feedback on Genetically Modified Organisms

GMO Food is Far More Sinister Than Most Realize

The concept of GMO’s (generically modified organisms) is largely misunderstood and I feel somewhat hyped as both overly safe and overly dangerous by both sides of the debate.    Today we dig deeply into this issue to fully understand the dangers of GMO’s including the often missed larger implications and impact on the biosphere and system level life webs.

Also remember today is the last day of our MSB special.  You can get your first year of MSB today for only 30 dollars.  Just join the MSB and use the discount code “positive” and get your first year for only 30 dollars.  See this post for more info on that.

Join me today as we discuss…

  • Is GMO the issue or is what they are spraying on the GMO’s the answer
  • How is a GMO different from a natural hybrid
  • Are GMO’s chemically different from non GMO’s
  • Is there a new micro pathogen connected to GMO’s (I am not sure yet)
  • Are GMOs and their related herbicides linked to breast cancer (a top oncologist thinks so)
  • Will GMO alfalfa cross pollinate and infect other fields, experts say it is a certainty
  • Why may our farmers not be able to ever stop growing GMOs now (anyone else think about this yet)
  • What is “bent grass” why should you care
  • Should we require an IQ test to be a politician (wait till you hear this)
  • Why GMOs threaten us even when they are not “food crops”
  • What is bioaccumulation and how does it move through “trophic” levels
  • How GMOs have an unexpected effect on our ground water, rivers and oceans
  • What the gulf dead zone and why it is expanding

Emergency Seed Banks and Open Pollinated vs Hybrid vs GMO

In this video I don’t just review the emergency seed bank from Directive21.com I dispel many myths about GMOs vs. Hybrid Variety seeds.  Emergency seed vaults are in my view an outstanding addition to your long term preps but the hype in the emergency seed industry is really misleading.  Tune into this video for hard and somewhat harsh facts about emergency seed products and the real reasons to invest in them vs. the fear based marketing of many other manufactures.

Episode-524- Developing Personal Seed Vaults

Governments, corporations and international organizations are all developing “seed vaults” for many reasons.  One is that seeds in and of themselves are life, they feed us and they are the way species of plants survive and continue to propagate themselves.  Second while telling us that GMO crops are safe, they are acutely aware of the damage potential they pose and the potential for entire varieties of plants to be wiped out by cross pollination with GMO based crops.  Third due to monopolization and marketing by seed companies many varieties are simply no longer being grown and due to that the variety is in danger of extinction and forever being lost to history.  Fourth seeds are the ability to produce food and energy and energy and food are forms of wealth.

Join me today as I discuss….

  • The why behind personal seed vaults
  • How seeds are first order wealth that can produce second order wealth
  • Some seeds are food and some foods are seed
  • Tiny seeds equal massive storage potential
  • Buying seeds at the end of the season (yes but)
  • Rotational planting varieties to keep fresh stock
  • Developing stocks of “wild seed”
  • The enemies of seed (light, moisture, heat)
  • Rice is a cheap and effective desiccant
  • Understanding “germination rates”
  • Getting seeds in exchanges
  • Learning more about saving seeds
  • Open pollination vs heirloom vs hybrid vs GMO
  • Planting on foreign soil (guerrilla and borrowed land)

Episode-422- The Damage Done By Agriculture

We rely on our modern agriculture system to feed the planet.  While most people in the modern world seem to believe food comes from a store it most certainly does not.  The bright lights and shiny packaging at the grocery is simply the last step in a long chain of systems.

The reality is be it animal or vegetable it all starts in the farm fields of the world and those fields are sick and dying for a variety of reasons.  Of course man’s solution is genetic engineering, new chemicals and attempting to adapt to the damage we are doing vs. reversing it.

Join me today as we discuss the following recent news stories about this problem…
