Episode-289- Bug In or Bug Out – 12 Questions to Ask

In the event of a disaster should you bug in or bug out (shelter in place or evacuate) is a big topic in many forums, email lists and among modern survivalists in general.  There are times when the question is easy to answer and times when it can be difficult.  The key is your life and the lives of those you love can hang in the balance of this decision so today we discuss 12 question to ask before you have to make the decision.

Tune in today as we consider the following questions…

  • Which choice gives you the best chance of survival for the scenario at hand? (this is not always clear)
  • How well prepared are you to bug in?
  • What exactly are you prepared for? (a forest fire is far different from local rioting)
  • Have evacuation orders been given?
  • What is the nature and probable duration of the threat?
  • Well staying put change anything as far as “saving your home”?
  • Where will you go and how will you get there?
  • Do you own a bug out location or have double up plans or no place to go at all?
  • Will you be able to help your community if you stay?
  • What will the impact of staying or going be on your family, can they handle what you can?
  • What can you take with you and what must you leave behind?
  • If you leave what exactly is waiting for you at your destination?

The time to answer these questions is not in the middle of a disaster but right now.  At this point you can plan, form contingencies and be prepared for a variety of outcomes. That way if the day comes your mind is ready to act and you can make the best use of the resources you have.  As always how you act and how you think is more important then your resources.

Episode-242- Overlooked Preps for Modern Survivalists

Today I go through a variety of items many preppers overlook or even if they have them in place they are not organized as part of their preps.  Some are simple and practical like certain overlooked forms of insurance.  We look at the simple value of spare sets of keys, contact lists, over the counter meds and more.

Don’t forget the pets, we talk about that a bit too today.  I also cover things like practic drills, safety deposit boxes (why you need one, you may not have thought of this), simple cheap AC invertors, simple back up battery power and more.

  • How far is far enough away, how close is to close
  • Does a BOL have to be remote, think about Hurricane Katrina
  • Why a bug out location is a highly personal choice and what you want is most important
  • Hidden gotchas to watch out for in buying a second piece of property
  • Why tent camping is not a good idea for your BOL and why you really need a structure ASAP
  • Starting with an outbuilding is a good option
  • Thoughts on over looked benefits of mountain land
  • My personal big 4, (water on property, guns are acceptable, land is good for growing food and livestock are welcome in the community)
  • Is the Northwest the most ideal place, thoughts on rough winters and possible global cooling
  • Watch out for potential annexation by surrounding towns/cities
  • Buyers covenants are good, home owners associations are evil!
  • If you move permanently to your BOL you no longer have a fall back position
  • Stay away from major roads, roving hordes are not the only reason
  • Know the community you have chosen before you buy
  • The hidden danger on land that borders “National Forest”, etc.
  • Have redundancy options for your well, (manual, solar, something not grid dependent)
  • Using slope to your advantage with water harvesting

Episode-28- The Importance of Documention of Survival and Evacuation Plans

Many survivalists feel that the best course of action is to be totally covert with plans. This can be a real mistake because in a true emergency it is likely you will need assistance from and want to provide help to other family members. Documentation of your plans can help you get back together in the highly likely event that your family is separated when an emergency or disaster hits.

Tune in today as we discuss…

  • The importance of printing and organizing your planning documentation
  • Listing and ranking all your potential threats
  • Documentation of your response and planning for each threat
  • Not relying on your PC for your documentation and collateral information
  • Keeping your planning book updated
  • The importance of multiple copies
  • Assigning roles and duties to all family members
  • Having a 15 minute, 1 hour and 1 day packing plan for evacuations
  • Having multiple evacuation routes
  • Planning or evacuation of your pets
  • Planning or more practical every day emergencies as well
  • Keeping communication records and options
  • Protection of your financial information while still keeping records of it
  • How a solid plan keeps you level headed and logical in an emergency
  • Planning not just what to take but where to put it in your vehicle

Episode-24- Equiping the 72 Hour Emergency Kit aka – The Bug Out Bag

On the Survival Podcast today we discuss assembling a 72 hour emergency kit also known as the bug out bag. We will discuss what items to include, how to get the most out of your supplies and more.

Important Note of Correction – In the intro to today’s show I briefly mentioned some current events including the failure of two more banks and a short fall in the Gas Tax due to Americans driving less. On the show I reported the short fall at 14 billion dollars, the actual federal short fall is 5 billion and the 14 billion is what it will collectively cost the states in revenue. I did report these numbers as they were reported on this mornings news on Fox News Dallas, their error became my error. A link to the actual WSJ article is included in the resources section for this podcast.

Today we discuss,
