Episode-2309- Freedom Through Independent Publishing

Phil M. Williams is an author, permaculture consultant, and activist for a stateless society. He is the author of thirteen books with permaculture and anarchist themes.

In 2008, after a decade as a landscape contractor, Phil sold his business and moved from the McMansion filled suburbs of Northern Virginia to rural Pennsylvania. He spent a couple of years as a mediocre gardener, before finding permaculture.

A few years later, and two completed PDC’s, he became a permaculture consultant. In addition to consulting, he’s spent the past six years developing his six-acre hillside into a permaculture site. His permaculture work can be found at FoodProduction101.com.

Phil is an accidental author. He had been writing in the winter for many years—with no intention of publishing. With the support of his wife, he published his first book, Fire the Landscaper in 2015. With his permaculture site mostly complete, more of his time is now spent writing.

He believes that entertainment is biased in favor of the state. Books, movies, and television often feature government employees as heroes, and anti-government people as the antagonists. With his books, he endeavors to counteract this bias, and show the state as it is.  He joins us today to discuss how independent publishing can be a path to freedom.

His new releases can be read for free at PhilWBooks.com.

Episode-2273- John Pugliano and Jack Spirko on The Richest Man in Babylon

I reached out to expert council member John Pugliano about doing this episode with me.  I feel the biggest weakness in what our young people are not taught today, above all other things how to handle, earn, manage and invest money.   While not the end all be all, I find The Richest Man in Babylon to be one of the best foundations on how to think about money ever written.  John and I break this classic down today using the following outline of some of the main concepts presented in the book.

There are also some surprises in today’s show, a phone call from Patrick Roehrman, the arrival of Nick Ferguson and more.  John and I did this recording at my kitchen table while he was visiting for the 10 Year Anniversary Party.  Lots of other TSP folks were on the way in, so rather than edit out the disruptions we rolled with them.  It makes for a fun show.

SUMMARY: Richest Man in Babylon

5 Laws of Gold (my version: money flows to where it’s treated best)

  • 1. Gold cometh gladly and in increasing quantity to any man who will put by not less than one-tenth of his earnings to create an estate for his future and that of his family.

          • i. Plan for prosperity and failure…within your sphere of influence & control.
          • ii. If you have dependents buy term life insurance.
            1
  • 4. Gold slippeth away from the man who invests it in businesses or purposes with which he is not familiar or which are not approved by those skilled in its keep.
    • a. You have to fix Stupid before you can fix Broke.
    • b. Don’t take advice from Stupid or Broke people.
      • i. Advanced advice: avoid these people all together.
        1
  • 5. Gold flees the man who would force it to impossible earnings or who followeth the alluring advice of tricksters and schemers or who trusts it to his own inexperience and romantic desires in investment.

Episode-2271- The Most Valuable Skill Most People Are Never Taught

That skill in three words is simply, “how to sell”, simply put, “sales is life and life is sales”.  One huge problem we have in life is people compartmentalize everything.  I.E. “Sales is something sales people do, and I am not a sales person, so I don’t need to worry about it.”

My one word response to this is………BULLSHIT.

Have you ever asked anyone out on a date?  Did you ever interview to get into a school?  Did you ever try out for a team?  Have you ever interviewed for a job?  Did you as a child ever convince your parents to buy you a toy?

Well, sales, sales, sales and sales are what the above items are.

The single most valuable thing I can teach you about sales is what I call an absolute definition of it.  An absolute definition means a simple statement that requires no further explanation and works all the time, every time.  My absolute definition of sales is “a transfer of belief” and lets put it to test with the above questions.

  • Getting a date – you transfer the belief that I am worth spending time with.
    ~
  • Getting into school – you transfer the belief that I will be a good student.
    ~
  • Getting on a team – you transfer the belief that I will be a good player.
    ~
  • Getting a job – you transfer the belief that I will be a good employee.
    ~
  • Getting a child’s toy – you transfer the belief that the toy is worth buying for some reason.

Do you see how simple that really is?  The truth is all of use are natural born sales people, we have something I started calling an “inner salesman” a long time ago.  Sadly for most of us, it is literally beaten out of us by the time we most need it.  Today I am going to put you back in touch with your old friend and tell you how he/she can help you build a better life.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • Why we are all born knowing how to sell
  • How this basic human ability is suppressed and beaten out of us
  • Why this is the number one reason I say people “hate money”
  • Why everyone needs to ABC (always be celling) all the time
  • Understand that every time you engage in a debate you are selling
  • The most basic of all sales formulas and how it works – the C.A.S.H. method
    • Create at problem
    • Agitate the problem
    • Solve the problem/problems
    • Help the prospect obtain the solution
      • Don’t be afraid to let them do all the work for you
  • The best way to get to a yes is to make it easy to say no
  • Never leave money (aka opportunity) on the table
  • Promise only what you can deliver
  • Close all the loops yourself
  • Ask for what you want, then shut up
  • My keys to success
    • Spend 80% of your time on the best prospects
    • Spend 20% of your time finding more prospects
    • Take as little of the prospects time as you can
    • Tell your prospect why you chose them
    • Be direct about why you are contacting them
    • Make it clear (nicely) that you don’t need them
    • Know your cycle and stick to it
  • It is all back to transfer of belief, and you can’t transfer what you don’t have

Akiva Silver has a background in wilderness survival and nature awareness. He holds a deep appreciation for wildlife and trees. Akiva runs Twisted Tree Farm, 20 acres of diverse orchards and a nursery.

The nursery provides Akiva and his family of 5 with their full income. He believes in the trees that he raises so much that he sees them as a path forward for humanity and all of the ecosystems surrounding us.

Akiva joins us to discuss tree crops as an incredible path forward on multiple levels.   Akiva says that, “by understanding how we can partner with the plant world, we can stabilize and build soils, increase wildlife populations, feed ourselves, manage the carbon cycle, and provide ourselves with abundant income.”

Episode-2162- Can Anyone Be an Entrepreneur – It Depends

I recently got this question and realized at once this was a show topic not a show segment.  It is a complex question and like most such questions the answer is, it depends.

Let’s look at some other seemingly simple questions on the topic to start peeling the onion as it were.  How about this?  Is being an entrepreneur hard?  Well it also depends, on many things like.  How large do you want the business to be? What experience do you have?  How gifted are you?  Is this a side hustle or a full time business?

Now that should start to paint a picture for you, the answer to “can anyone be an entrepreneur”, is a definite yes with a lot of caveats.  Let’s answer a similar question to see how this works.  How about, can anyone be a basketball player?  The answer is clearly yes isn’t it, there is even wheelchair basketball leagues.  I would say if you can move and use your arms you can be a basketball player.

But can anyone be an NBA basketball player?  Can anyone be good enough to play college ball?  Can anyone and everyone make the high school team?  We can easily answer that with no, no and no.  There are only so many spots at that level and talent decides who gets them.

But anyone can get some buddies together and start an after work league, if you play basketball you are a “basketball player”, right?  With entrepreneurship there are even more opportunities, there are niches upon niches within other niches.  So the question isn’t can you be an entrepreneur, rather these questions you must answer to determine your path…

  • Do you want to be an entrepreneur?
  • Do you have any specialized knowledge or skills?
  • Do you have or are you willing to create the necessary time?
  • Is there something you are passionate about that you can leverage?
  • If you can’t do what you are passionate about right now, are you willing to do something to simply learn and earn?
  • What sacrifices are required and are you willing to make them?
  • How would you define success in your venture?
  • Does/will your family support you in this effort?
  • How badly do you want it compared to what you will get if you succeed?
  • Are you kidding yourself?  (mental masturbation)
  • Why are you not already doing this?

Today I will discuss these questions and ideas and concepts around them.  I will not answer them though for anyone other than myself.  I am not the guy who tells you to stand in front of a mirror and say, “I’m great, I’m wonderful and everybody likes me“.  Rather I attempt to give you a way to examine a path for yourself and determine if it is the right path for you.

Episode-2032- Planning Your Future When the Future is Uncertain

We talk a lot about what I call “lifestyle design” around here.  When people hear that term they get the general idea, because the words are common.

  • Lifestyle – The way in which a person lives.
    ~
  • Design – Purpose, planning, intention and thought behind an action.

So lifestyle design means to put purpose, planning, intention and thought into how you live your life.  So yep people generally get the basic concept, what people usually struggle with though is designing a lifestyle for today that is resilient for tomorrow.

I think we have all had those moments, we are happy, really happy with our life as it is, then one or two things change and we are off the rails.  Sometimes these are external factors like a job loss.  Other times they are internal factors sticking with employment perhaps we realize we hate our jobs but hey it pays the bills.

Those are only two examples, and no one can plan for everything but today things are even more complicated.  We all know the next few decades will have more flux in them than anything man kind has yet to experience.  AI and automation will replace thousands of jobs, economic reality will be hitting hard for many governments and technology gaps will make finding jobs harder than ever.

Join Me Today to Discuss How to Plan For an Uncertain Future

  • Major shifts are coming in
    • Education
    • Technology
    • Manufacturing
    • Transportation
    • Everything
  • What has always worked will still likely work
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Adaptability and Flexibility
    • Hunting/Gathering/Growing
    • A solid conservative to risk balance
    • Saving
  • The basics of lifestyle design
    • Define the goals
    • Define the steps to get there honestly with yourself
    • Prioritize the steps
    • Begin taking action
  • If it is that simple, why don’t more people do it
    • It requires sacrifice
    • It requires honest with yourself
    • It requires taking responsibility for where you are
    • It requires the courage to do what most wont
  • Final thoughts;

Episode-456- Building Personal Brand and Income

Every once in a while I tend to break out of the typical “survival topic mold” and I am doing that today.  That said there is nothing that could be more accurately described as a survival topic than having your own stream of income or at least your own brand that makes you marketable as a cut above other job seekers.  The landscape is changing, the resume is dead, jobs are outsourced, the US doesn’t make many “things” any more, we simply consume them

Yet today technology has changed the entry cost into business, it used to take blood letting hard work and lots of money, today you don’ t need a lot of money just a ton of hard work.

Join me today as I discuss…

  • Why having your own income streams is definitely a survival topic
  • Why passion is the key to success in business
  • Why the resume, television as we know it, conventional radio and more are all dead or dying
  • Why the writing was on the wall 4 years ago but big companies refused to listen
  • Why giving a shit about your customers is more important than listening to them
  • Five great ideas for web based businesses
    • A cooking show
    • A REAL fishing or hunting show
    • A home handyman show
    • A podcasters social network
    • Online classes in social media for older people
  • Five great ideas for web empowered businesses
    • Home pet care (pet sitting, yes I am serious)
    • Urban cooperative  farming
    • Self guided GPS tours
    • Pool cleaning for above ground pools
    • High School athlete video production
  • Why now is the time to do what you love.
