Episode-127- Why You Must Store Food

I read a great post today from the Down In The Hills Survival Blog called, Running out of food.  He pointed out that “See if you got food, it’s easy to get more food. Being out of food and trying to get enough food to survive on ain’t so easy”.  That is a simple but astute observation and prompted me to do today’s show about various sources of food for storage beyond the store front.

Tune in today to hear…

  • A bit about why getting food is a easier if you already have what you need on hand for the near future
  • Why “a country boy can survive” mentality is both valid and invalid in some ways
  • Considering crops that produce large yields in your garden and storage methods for them
  • Using food steamers to blanch vegetables such as green beans and snap peas
  • How adding some low cost highly storables such as pasta, rice and dry beans can extend your gardens ability to feed you
  • A cool recipe for a vegetable soup with beans and rice
  • How rice and beans combine for complete protein when you don’t have fresh meat around
  • Lessons learned in my garden last year
  • Thoughts on local foraging with plants like blackberries, blueberries and wild strawberries

  • Thoughts on wild sources of nuts such as black walnuts and acorns and others
  • How hunting provides food but also has some major limitations in many areas
  • The reality that the State of California, New Jersey and others may soon go bankrupt, what it means and why you need to get serious now about survival living

Episode-41- Thoughts on Flu Pandemic and Survival Planning for Disease Outbreaks

I recently received a request to do a show on the potential risk of an influenza outbreak (global flu pandemic) and was able to quickly put a show together on it. What is interesting is that the governments official advice is remarkably similar to the fundamental preparations that survivalists discuss every day.

I encourage you to take this threat seriously because a pandemic is one of those risks that is not an “if” but simply a “when” and by what particular means. Tune into todays show to hear my thoughts on,

  • The shocking death statistics from three pandemics in the last 100 years from flu outbreaks
  • The high death rate of infected parties by the H5N1 Avian Flu
  • Why world governments are truly alarmed by the potential out break of the bird flu
  • Why we can’t create a vaccine for a flu strain until it is really to late
  • Why we have not yet had a case of avian flu in the U.S.
  • The real economic impact of a true flu or other pandemic
  • The real need for a quarantine in such an outbreak even a government enforced one
  • Why food storage is so important for this potential threat
  • Why even the power grid and water system may be at risk
  • The people most at risk to the economic threat that will come from the flu threat
  • Why your job is at risk and how you have no protection from termination during a quarntine
  • The importance of having the choice to self quarantine before one is ordered
  • The fantasy land some people live in that denies the horrific reality of a true pandemic
  • Why the aftermath will be something the government can’t “bail us out of”

Episode-30- Is it Time for a “New” Civilian Militia

Is it time to organize a new civilian militia? No not the camo wearing paramilitary type but a true “civilian” dedicated to assisting first responders and local law enforcement. I am not looking to lead or spearhead this concept just get a dialog going about the concept and some ways I think we can change the preception of exactly what militia means and make it a badge of honor vs. a separatist concept with the mainstream population.

Here is the outline I used for this show, there is some redundency in it. My hope is that discussion groups and forums will begin discussing this concept and it may or may not take off. Either way I think it is a conversation worth having.

My Outline

Civilian Militia

  1. National Level Organization
  2. Complies with all local, state and federal laws
  3. Marketed as a force for assistance, not anti government
  4. Main objective – to provide assistance and additional security at times when law enforcement, emergency responders and other organizations are stretched to their limits
  5. Armed is an individual choice but is subject to all laws
  6. Each local branch will register or notify or some how be on record with local law enforcement and possibly other emergency responders
  7. Any uniform devised should be “non militant” though there may need to be a militant division of some sort
  8. Training focused on
    a.Communications and Reporting
    b.First Aid
    c.Supply Distribution
    d.Working with emergency responders
e.Use of non lethal force for the protection of civilians
  9. National Organization governed as a “Constitutional Republic” including a judiciary committee
  10. Membership should have some “dues” associated with it, annual and low.
  11. Should focus on recruiting, current and prior service law enforcement, prior service military, professionals in various disciplines, EMTs-etc.,

Part Two – The Marketing Plan

  1. Recruit professionals with a background in marketing, sales and public speaking – make them the voice of the company.
  2. Position the organization as a “helper” to local law enforcement, emergency responders and local charities.
  3. Make membership on par with membership or association with the Salvation Army, Red Cross or Rotary Club.
  4. Invite law enforcement personal to all meetings (most often they won’t show up).
  5. No videos, pictures, etc of camo clad para military personal
  6. Mission statement – “To observe, report and notify first, to intervene only when absolutely necessary and then as a “concerned citizen”.
  7. Any firearm use and or carry will be done as a “citizen”, in other words a CCP holder carries during “service” because he/she always carries.
  8. Strict code of ethics – violations of them result in termination of membership.
  9. No military ranks, – Sgt, Col, etc.Replace with things like Member, Organizing Member, Neighborhood Coordinator, Regional Coordinator, etc.

While the above outline is useful it may be necessary to listen to this show in full to avoid misunderstandings. NOTE – I have no issues with existing militias and I support their right to exist and in general the work they do as patriots.

I just believe there is an opportunity to create a new type of militia that can help local communities in times of need and I also belive there would be a ton of interest in joining such an organization for many individuals if they had the option.

My plan is by NO MEANS perfect or complete, I simply am submitting it to the community as one possible starting point for a new organization that may be seriously needed in the coming uncertain times. It is humbly submitted to the survivalist and self sufficiency community as a concept for discussion.

Episode-29- Setting and Prioritizing Survival Planning Goals

The key to getting truly prepared for anything is planning, today’s show is two lessons in one with prioritizing goals to a get a mission accomplished. To get on track and explain the logic of my system of planning I first go over the “debt snowball” which has been made popular by syndicated radio personality Dave Ramsey.

Tune in today as we discuss

  • The mentality behind the debt snowball and how that same mentality can be applied to survival planning
  • Ranking and listing the threats that are most likely to impact your life
  • How to do a personal threat assessment and rank your biggest needs
  • Finding the top five needs for your top five threats
  • How to build momentum and motivation as you move toward full preparedness
  • The reality that will lead both the out and out fringe survivalist and the basic boyscout to very similar plans

The goal of this show is to move beyond analysis paralisis into a real meaningful level of action and avoid feeling overwhelmed by all there is to do. Please add in your own comments and suggestions, remember our show is one man’s opinion not a lecture. Your input is not just welcome but a necessary part of making our show a little better every day.

Episode-24- Equiping the 72 Hour Emergency Kit aka – The Bug Out Bag

On the Survival Podcast today we discuss assembling a 72 hour emergency kit also known as the bug out bag. We will discuss what items to include, how to get the most out of your supplies and more.

Important Note of Correction – In the intro to today’s show I briefly mentioned some current events including the failure of two more banks and a short fall in the Gas Tax due to Americans driving less. On the show I reported the short fall at 14 billion dollars, the actual federal short fall is 5 billion and the 14 billion is what it will collectively cost the states in revenue. I did report these numbers as they were reported on this mornings news on Fox News Dallas, their error became my error. A link to the actual WSJ article is included in the resources section for this podcast.

Today we discuss,

  • The purpose of a 72 Hour Kit – getting to safety not spending three days at home.
  • Ideas for food items that keep you nourished on the go and are easy to obtain
  • The advantages of a “back pack” over a duffel bag
  • Ideas for wet weather and sleeping gear
  • My view of what makes a good survival knife
  • Rechargeable lighting options
  • Making sure you have the ability to purify water
  • The value of maps, a gps and a compass
  • Why a poncho is not a good wet weather gear option
  • Ideas to save space and weight
  • Various “hard gear” equipment options
  • Methods of self defense that won’t be confiscated by authorities during a disaster
  • The value of a simple small tool kit

The list presented in the podcast is by no means complete. If you have ideas and suggestions please leave them in the comments below.

Also remember if you haven’t yet to enter our listener appreciation contest.
