Trevor Van Hemert of PedalToPetal.com

Trevor Van Hemert runs Pedal to Petal a company that picks up food scraps from all over the city of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Pedal To Petal is a permaculture-based collective of bicycle loving food security activists who are taking direct action to reduce carbon emissions and landfill waste and to feed the soil and the city’s hungry.

They do all their pick up and transport via the use of bicycles with zero use of any fossil fuels. The finished compost is used to grow food in the same city where the components are collected and the compost is produced making Pedal to Petal a truly local business.

While most people would tend to expect Pedal to Petal to be a non profit business it is actually a very successful for profit enterprise proving that a business can be successful, profitable and still have a soul and a noble purpose.

Episode-142- Composting, Gardening and Global Politics

Well my Monday morning show was preempted by equipment failure.  I rectified it and show #142 was done on an afternoon drive home.  Today’s show starts with just a few of the many things that have me concerned about the coming year and reinforce why we prep.

Today’s show discusses in its’ first 10 minutes some of the current events on my radar.  Such as more power for Chavez, Clinton is off to the far east to discuss climate change and Obama is sending signals of weakness to Iran and escalating the Afghan war with NO PLAN for exit.  Sound familure?  Where the hell is our “hope and CHANGE”?

I then move on to a more enjoyable subject of gardening and composting.  I cover building raised beds, my special custom mix for a new raised bed.  I continue with the right first crops for a new bed and putting it to sleep at the end of the season in a way that produces amazing second season soil.  I also discuss three types of “worm composting”, give away some special secrets for soil enrichment and tell you about a brand of compost to NEVER waste your money on.
