Etekcity 4 Pack of LED Lanterns – Item of the Day

eteklanternsEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.  These things are an incredible value and are the result of a lot of research.   And now Etekcity has made this product even better, you can still get the original ones in a four pack for 25.99 which is 6.50 a piece.

The new upgraded option is 4 units for 31.99 or 8 bucks a piece.  So what does the higher price get you?  Two big things, first they now have a dimmer switch, with four different light levels, that can extend the insane battery life even more, or it is just nice when you want less light.  Also the bases on the new models now have magnets so they will stick to any metal surface.

On top of this the tops now have a storage space.  It isn’t a ton of space but plenty for a small bit of cordage, some tinder, extra keys, etc.  Heck drop a cheap ferro rod in each of them and you have fire and light where ever you go.  All in all as I order more of these, and I will, I will happily spend the extra dollar fifty a piece for these upgrades.

I have previously reviewed The Streamlight Siege Lantern.  And I still think it is the highest quality LED lantern on the market.

It is also 26-114 dollars based on the options you pick.  Even at the lowest priced option if you wanted one for every room of a 8 room house, you are looking at 200 bucks.  Frankly for this type of thing, it is over kill.  I wanted an affordable solution for every room lighting during an extended blackout.

I started looking around and dozens of companies are marketing these little pop up lanterns with minor differences.  The housings are almost identical.  Some are very inexpensive and some cost almost as much as The Siege, none are as good though.

Well I love Etekcity which has a lot of really cool stuff much of which I have reviewed in the past like their Thermal Gun, Power Failure Lights and Remote Control Electrical Outlets.  So I checked and they have this four pack for only $25.99 with free shipping.  This pack is an Amazon best seller with over a 4000 reviews and an average of 5 stars.

But I always check the one star reviews before picking an item.  Many times you can tell said reviews are written by idiots.  In this case, however; they bothered me.  Almost all of them say they got one that didn’t work out of the box and then never worked again.  So I began checking other options, heck it is almost like ever single brand of these things are clones.   They all have great reviews, a few bad reviews and all the different ones have almost the exact same complaint, dead on arrival or after one use.

So I contacted Etekcity who has great service and said basically that it is understandable at this price point and selling so many a few will have problems, but what is your return/replacement policy and this is what I got back in return, within an hour by the way!

Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out to us and thank you for all the feedback we appreciate it. Honestly we sell hundreds if not a thousand of these lanterns a day and we do have problems with them, they are not perfect.

Typically the main issue is a little toggle switch in the base that likely during shipping breaks unfortunately and once in awhile the top of the lantern is cracked or loose again probably due to shipping.

Once the lantern makes it to the customer and they arrive in good order we never hear from the customer because they seem to not fail with normal use.

We usually only hear from the customers the moment they open the package and find the damage and then we immediately send out a replacement and then all lanterns come with a 1 year warranty.

These are not the worlds greatest lantern but for around $6 each, they are one of amazons best sellers and we think for the price they are the best around.

thank you

Okay so every single one of those one star reviews are people that simply could  have gotten a free replacement, on a $6.50 product?  Honestly this is why I have recommended so many things from Etekcity.

Talk about honesty in a nut shell they said, “hey look when you sell this many products of this type some will have problems, but we stand by and replace them”, what more could you ask for for about 6 bucks?

With that I was sold, I got two sets, we have them in our black out kits and if one fails, I don’t care I have 16!  That said all of mine have worked just fine and were in perfect shape when they got here.  But this was important to me, I wanted to be sure that if you did have a problem, Etekcity would fix it and I wanted to give you a lot cost option for back up lighting.  And hey even at this stupid cheap price, batteries are included!  Please consider that even cheap ass Rayovac Batteries are about 8 bucks for a 12-Pack.

And these do that, they will give you 12 full hours of light off three measly AA batteries.  So to me at the cost and for what they do this is the best deal in back up LED lighting for your house and your BOK (Black Out Kit).    So I really recommend you pick up at least one of the orginal Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns  and I really think the Upgraded Version is worth the exta few bucks.  I really have to say though, I like that Etekcity didn’t discontinue the old lanterns and left the choice to consumer.  There are some other manufacturers out there that could learn a thing or two from them.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – I have noticed a few negative reviews complaining of leaking batteries ruining these lanterns.  Here is my rule for batteries, never store them in your devices for long periods of time.  I don’t care if the device is expensive or cheap, I don’t care of the batteries are generic or top brand, just don’t do it.

We keep flashlights (mostly D-Cell Maglites) around the house, we use them all the time.  Used devices never seem to have this problem.  When they start to weaken we replace them.

In our BOK we keep our devices and with them a ziplock bag with 4 sets of batteries per device in the bag.  We use our power failure lights and flashlights to retrieve our BOK and simply put the batteries in at that point and time.

Note that it is true that battery manufacturers are required by law to replace any device that leaking batteries destroy.  That doesn’t help in the middle of a black out though does it?  Simply put any device that is not used often, take the batteries out of it, store them with it and save yourself the headache.

Dura Heat Kerosene Heater – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Dura Heat Convection Kerosene Heater.

What!  My God Jack don’t you know how
dangerous those things are?

Hold on, calm down, let’s take a look at this concern.

We now live in a society where they put, “do not iron clothes while wearing them” as a warning label on irons.  Think about that for a moment please.  Oven doors have a warning not to stand on them and use them as a step ladder, (yes really).  So do you think if Kerosene Heaters were the death machines some claim them to be any company would be in business selling them today.

That said safety is a concern which is one reason I like this model.  If you bump it hard or if it gets tipped over, it will shut itself off.  It also has a great heat cage to prevent accidental burns.

What about CO2 you fool, we will all die!

Please take a breath and let me ask you, when exactly was the last time you heard, “Kerosene heater kills family of four”?  Anyyyyyyway, yes CO2 is produced when burning any organic fuel, but here are basic rules for using a heater like this.

  1.  Do not use in a small closed in room
  2.  Always make sure your wick is in good condition
  3.  Don’t burn the fame too high, if it is smoking it is way too high
  4.  Crack a window or two just a bit to allow circulation

Number 4 likely isn’t needed with modern heaters but it is such a cheap insurance policy there is no reason not to do so.  By simply doing the above these heaters are safe and hundreds of thousands of people are using them all the time.

That said my primary use for them was always outbuildings, shops and sheds and they are fantastic for that.  But when we lived in Pennsylvania and the electric heat went out they saved our bacon, and two heated our entire 2200 square foot home to comfortable levels with one up and one down stairs.

What makes this great is they produce deep heat and radiate it 360 degrees.  If you live in a truly cold climate bang for the buck this is YOUR BEST BET FOR BACK UP HEAT if you don’t have a wood stove or a fireplace insert.

There is one big concern that to me makes something like the Big Buddy Propane Heater a better option, and that is kerosene availability.  Now you can generally get prepackaged cans from hardware and specialty stores for about 8 dollars a gallon just about anywhere, but that is not economical.  These things burn about 1 gallon per 4-6 hours.  So do that math over a week!

Now where we lived in PA every gas station had K1 at the pump for about the price of gas and diesel.  Here in Dallas – Fort Worth it is hard to find more than a few places with kerosene and it seems there are less each year.  So in short I recommend kerosene heaters for colder states with wide availability of fuel at fair prices.  I recommend propane for back up heat for many southern states because you can get cheap propane everywhere.

Again though bang for the buck if you have kerosene available these heaters heat far more efficiently then propane portable heaters, they are easy to maintain and safe if used properly.  If your primary heating solution is electric, let me simply say whether it is the Dura Heat Kerosene Heater  or the Big Buddy Propane Heater, get at lest one or two of these into your winter preps if you don’t have a solution already.

The alternative is that one day it is say 12 degrees outside, an ice storm takes out power and you and your family have 3 days or more of shivering to look forward to.

I do want to be clear I have not used this particular model.  I switched to propane back in 2004 when we returned to Texas due to fuel availability.  We actually gave our two kerosene heaters to neighbors when we left.

To find a heater to recommend what I did was intensively research safety, service and customer satisfaction and found this one to be the best currently available.  With over 120 customer review and 4.5 stars overall, along with a price of only 150 bucks with free shipping, I simply think in this area the Dura Heat Kerosene Heater  is the best value currently on the market.

Final note, fireplaces are great, but they don’t heat homes, they at best warm one room.  I am not putting them down, I love fireplaces but they send 85% of their heat up the chimney and out into the sky. Don’t think simply having a fireplace is a complete back up for cold weather grid down scenarios.

Nebo 6350 Larry Work Light – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Nebo 6350 Larry Work Light.  I have to say this is one of  the most unique ways I have ever come to learn about a product.

I received an email from a guy that said he found one of these up in a drop ceiling doing some work at a customers building.  Given it was long abandoned with dead batteries he took it home.  Found that it took 3 AAA batteries and popped a set in, his first thought were “man this thing is bright”, his second thought was I wonder how much they cost.  A simple web search led him to find this amazing little light is only about 8 bucks.  He then emailed me about it.

I ordered two, and now I will be ordering more.  This little thing is just slick, super light weight and fits in a shirt pocket easily enough.  The base is flat so it will stand up on any flat surface and the clip has a magnet so it will both stick to metal or you can hang it on anything convenient in the area.

Many years ago (like in the mid 90s) I did a lot of cabling work in buildings for computer systems, I can tell you exactly why this thing was up in a ceiling, it would be GOLDEN for work like that!

How bright is this thing, try 170 lumens with only three measly AAA batteries.  To really get how bright that is see the video below.

One note, for some reason the description of this light says it is made with aluminum and that the base is magnetic.  There are definitely errors there.  The body is a good quality plastic and the magnet is in the clip not the base.  I checked and there are other colors of this light on Amazon, there are also like 4 packs of various colors.  None of those listings have these errors.

So why am I linking to the one with errors?  First because I do believe it is an error not a deception.  I have learned that this light is very well known in the electronics and computer world so I doubt they are trying to trick anyone.

The bigger reason is because this one is the BEST PRICE I can find, that is why.  The price on this is 8.53 with free shipping.  All the other single listings are over 9 bucks.  So this is simply the best deal.

Well unless you want 4?  Pretty close to the same price but you can get a 4 pack in 4 different colors 32.99 with free shipping, which is 8.24  piece.  So the 4 pack would save you $1.13 on four.  Not huge but a buck is a buck and likely you are going to want 4 of these things, I think they should be in every tool box, tackle box, range box and glove box personally.

So whether you just want to pick up 1 or 2 for 8.53 a piece, or you want to get a 4 Pack for 32.99 check out the Nebo 6350 Larry Work Light, it deserves a place in your kit and on your homestead.

Mr. Heater Portable Big Buddy Propane Heater – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Mr. Heater Portable Big Buddy Propane Heater.  This guy saved our butts big time during the great ice storm of 2011 in Arkansas.  It is amazing the amount of heat this guy provides.

To get best use of it you absolutely want to get the large tank adapter for it.  Running on a lower setting a standard grill tank gives you heat for a LONG time.  Of course it can also use the little 1 pound cans which is convenient for somethings.

To make that economical I suggest you get an adapter that allows you to use large tanks to refill the one pound cans. These can be had for 10-15 bucks here is the one I recommend.  If you have never used one here is a video on how to do so.

I decided to feature this item because winter is swiftly on the way.  As I said in 2011 we had a major ice storm in Arkansas and were without power for 7 days, temps were mostly in the sub 30s during the day and low teens over night.  Between this heater and our fire place and generator we never even cared.

There are other uses though!  You know that relative you have, we all have one that is ALWAYS COLD, the one that stays at your place for the holidays and wants to turn up your thermostat to just this side of hell because they are cold at night.  Well put this in their room and let them heat just that room.

But is it safe?  VERY VERY safe indeed.  First it is quite safe to burn propane indoors, people have been doing it forever, but there are two safety features built in.  One it has a built in O2 detector, if levels drop it shuts itself off.  Also if it is tipped over it again shuts itself off.

The key to getting most efficient use of this heater is to pick a room or two to heat, set it pretty high for say 10 minutes to take off the chill and then run it pretty low.  It is amazing how well it works when you do it that way.  Again folks winter is coming, it always does, the time to beef up your winter preps is before not after the first snow flies.  So check out the Mr. Heater Portable Big Buddy Propane Heater soon.

I have also reviewed my favorite kerosene heater but not everyone has good local access to kerosene, so you can read both reviews and choose the right back up heat system for your pending winter needs.

P.S. – If you live in the socialist hell holes of Massachusetts or Canada your owners (elected officials) say you have to buy this version and pay 20 dollars more more for it.  I can’t find a thing different about this version, likely it has a built in tax or some such shit.  Additionally if you live in the nanny state of California your owners say you must read this bunch of bullshit they wrote before you endanger yourself with a perfectly safe heater.

Globe Electric 48W 360° Work Light – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Item of the day is the Globe Electric 48W 360° Work Light.  I LOVE THESE LIGHTS.  Really I do.  For a long time like many I used typical stand based directional work lights like these for this need.  They do work, they are bight but in many ways they suck.

I mean these lights are fine if you are in a shop and point them under the hood of a car, at a work bench or something like that.  But for ambient light in a work area they are kind of useless.  They only really light up the area you point them at and worse when you turn around, they blind you.

I found the Globe Electric Work Light when my buddy David brought two of them over for one of our workshops.  We try to provide lighting between the outbuildings so people don’t break their necks, so they can wash their evening dishes, etc.  Until I found these we would attempt to elevate the directional lights, etc.  It worked but it was not very good.

We got these and two of them basically turn the area into a well lit work area, and that is outside with no reflection.  In a shop building they provide awesome light.

But think about the prepper applications, one of these fully lights 2-3 rooms if you are talking open concept, say kitchen, dining and living area, certainly well enough to get around, not stub your toe etc in a black out, and it does it all on 48 watts.  So it will run a LONG time on a few deep cycle batteries in a back up system.

And when I had a farm hand working for me in the short hours of winter I called it his “slave light” much to his bemusement.  Because we would just run an extension cord to the area he was working in and it was plenty of light to unload trucks, mulch garden beds, etc.

Oh and one more thing for this little multi-tasker, they are great for when you need to get more light into shooting a video.

For 99 bucks these are simply the best damn work light I have ever found.  If you go night fishing and have battery back up or an inverter man these things are amazing for that as well as lighting up a camping area.  And yea they attract bugs at night, so all the bugs go to the light and you are 25 feet away from them!

Personally I don’t know why more companies don’t embrace this format.  These are not 100% perfect but they are damn good and I still have one I stole from David over three years ago and it still works as good as the day I um, “acquired it”.

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

P.S. – Don’t feel sorry for David, he has emptied my good liquor cabinet of more than enough to cover the 99 bucks.  As evidence of that I present this!  That was a 30 year old tawny port, looted while I was on vacation.  Yea and he also ran off with about 8 pounds of my dry sausage and jerky and fed it to himself and his dog in Alaska!  True story.  We all need more friends like this.

Camp Chef Ranger II Table Top Stove – Item of the Day

NOTE – I am bringing this around for a couple reasons.  First we are right on the edge of spring camping season.  I love a grill as much as anyone but this makes camping so much more enjoyable, especially making sides and breakfast.  Next right now this stove is on sale and is currently 10 bucks off the regular price.  Next the price on the small bottle adapter has dropped from about 25 bucks down to 17, so this is a great time to pick up this item.

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Camp Chef Ranger II Table Top Stove.  I break down the value of this stove into four distinct areas.

First if you are on electric for your stove and the power goes out you do not want to try to run your range with your generator, unless you have a huge one.  Running a coffee maker puts a hit on a small gen set let alone a stove.  So it is back up cooking for those of you with electric.

Second is for the camper that “truck camps”.  I mean this is no back packing stove but mostly when I camp now I have my truck with me.  So between this stove and my Steven Harris battery system in my truck box, I feel like I am on grid.

Third is for you folks with electric stoves even when you do have power.  Look cooking on gas is just a hell of a lot more fun then electric.  This little thing has as much power as my gas range in my kitchen.  Many home cooks would love to have a gas range but just don’t have gas service and a big propane pig is not practical.  This is the next best thing.

Fourth is what I consider life style enhancement for all of us.  Let’s say it is a beautiful morning on a non work day.  You and your family want a nice breakfast.  Well go out on the porch or the deck and cook outside.  Just set this guy up on a table and get to work.  Get yourself a nice French Press and boil some water and make coffee or hot tea to go with it.

adapterA quick note, this stove comes with a hose and is designed to run on 20 gallon grill sized propane tanks.  If you want to run small one pound cans (which is really convenient for this stove) you need to add the small bottle adapter to your order.

I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the value of the Camp Chef Ranger II Table Top Stove.  It really blows me away that you can get a portable two burner stove that cooks as nice as my 1200 dollar range in my kitchen does for under 100 bucks.  And like everything I recommend it is very highly rated on Amazon with 4.5 star with over 130 reviews.

MagLite LED 3 D-Cell Flashlight – Item of the Day

magliteEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the MagLite LED 3 D-Cell Flashlight.  I absolutely love this light for so many reasons.  The only thing that would make it better is if it came in a 4 cell model.  For some reason (perhaps over driving the LED) they do not make a 4 or 6 cell version of this light in LED, though you can get those in incandescent.

I was very excited when the first version of this light came out, until I got one, bluntly it sucked.  It would start out bright and fade over time, turn it off and wait it would be bright again for say 30 seconds and start fading again.

I was pretty much done with LED tech from MagLite at that point.  Then I heard they fixed the issues which was related to heat build up of the bulb in gen one.  I gave them another try and now I own over a half dozen of these.  There is one in the door of both vehicles, one in my night stand, one near the front and back door, and two in our black out kit.

This light is rugged and it just works, and you get very long battery life with the LED light.  I actually carry its little brother, the MagLite 2 C-Cell LED Flashlight in our BOBs as this one is a bit big for that application.

As always I am big on quality to value ratio.  I am a guy taht will spend 500 dollars on a one of a kind knife, I am not cheap but an item like this isn’t something you have one of, you have many of them.  They are not just a source of light but also a HIGHLY effective impact weapon, especially when you use the light to blind an attacker just before dropping the hammer on his nose with the handle.  In the end the MagLite LED 3 D-Cell Flashlight is a hell of a value.

For the ones you keep in your car you may want to add the Bust A Cap Glass Breaker and it can break more than just glass, I am just sayin.

Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Item of the day the Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter.  Long term listeners may be thinking oh this is an old one, and it is, sort of.  While doing research last week I found that Whistler no longer makes the 800 Watt inverter that Steven Harris and I have both recommended for years.

So does the new Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter stand up to the old Whistler PRO800W Inverter?  Yes!  Yes it most certainly does.  Despite the few idiots writing low reviews (more on that in a minute) this is pretty much the same old Whister in a new body with a few small upgrades.

Just like the old model there are two AC outlets, however now the inverter has 2 vs. 1 USB port, which is great for charging smart devices while using the inverter for other things.  It also still has the most important safety features including, Electronic Circuit Protection consisting of Smart Surge Control, Overload/Voltage Protection, Short Circuit Protection, and Thermal Cutoff.

What about the idiotic negative reviews?  First there are a few legitimate ones where they say it is DOA, with any electronic product this can and does happen.  This is why I love Amazon if anything is wrong you exchange or return it.  Just consider they sell thousands of these a week, if .2% have a problem, a few will show up.  The beauty is with Amazon you have no risk, print a return label and exchange it or get a refund.  One reason right there I LOVE Amazon.

Most of the negatives are idiotic though.  People trying to pull 500 watts but plugging it into a cigarette lighter plug which can only handle 150 watts tops.  People saying that the back terminals are not threaded like the picture, well dummy that is because you ordered the 1200 watt one with heavier terminals for higher wattage.  Or someone saying it won’t run a microwave, well no shit!  I mean who would have ever expected that a 800 watt inverter would not be able to run an 1100 watt microwave?  Keep in mind these people breed and they vote!

This inverter is what it always has been a good low cost option for back up power when you need it.  It allows you with simply some extension cords and some power splitters to make use of the one or two “generators” sitting in your driveway or garage.  If you are sane you can power most things in your house with one or two of these just not all at the same time, you can run a fridge for a few hours to keep it cool then run other things.

It will easily run some LED lights to keep you able to see where things are.  It will of course give you all the power you need to charge all your devices, run a laptop and even a cable modem, again you just have to pick what you want to do at any time, you can’t do everything at once, but you can do an awful lot.

At 48.55 a piece I don’t know of any other single preparedness item that can do as much for under 50 bucks.  I also want to say this is a big time case for two is one and one is none.  This is a good product but inverters do fail, all electronics do, so keep two at least on hand.  So check out the Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter today and consider adding it to your black out kit.

Etekcity LED Night Light / Flashlight: Rechargeable Emergency Light – Item of the Day

These are by far my favorite Power Failure Lights.

These are by far my favorite Power Failure Lights.

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Etekcity LED Night Light / Flashlight: Rechargeable Emergency Light.

I have tried dozens of brands of these types of lights over the years, they are all useful while they last.  Generally at some point the over charge and stay on even when they should be off.

I have never been happy with any of them long term until I found these from Etekcity.

I have been running these now for over a year in a half with no issues, they work and just keep on working.  The only down side is they take up an entire outlet.  I have changed a few of my outlets to quads to deal with that, I like them that much.

They also have motion sensors so when you walk by them in the dark they turn on and go back off after no motion is detected for 30 seconds. This prevent stubbed toes in dark hallway, great for night bathroom trips too, with out lighting up the entire house.

They are plug and play, you don’t have to configure anything. You an pick them up and take them with you like a flashlight.  Oh and the most common complaint in the small minority of negative reviews?  Well, they are too bright, yea really.

If you have kiddos man you need these, when the lights go out kids get scared.  Now it isn’t a big deal when you are right next to them, but how about Billy is playing in his room, you are in the shower with soap in your eyes and bam, lights out.  Billy is crying, you are naked, you have soap in your eyes and you can’t see for more than one reason, fun stuff huh?

Now imagine you have one of these in the hall way, one in Billy’s room and one in the kitchen, lights go out, all of these come on.  Now you need to get to your black out kit, well you just pick it up and take it with you.

I love the one in my kitchen!  If I get up from the bed while I was reading for say a drink, I get to the kitchen it comes on, I can see to get a water or what have  you, and the 30 second stay on is plenty long enough to get back to our room with viability.  So check out the Etekcity LED Night Light / Flashlight: Rechargeable Emergency Light set today.

Your kids and your toes will thank you for it.  And at only 29 bucks for a twin pack they come out to under 15 bucks a piece.  As to quality well then have 4.5 out of 5 stars with close to 300 reviews you know they work well.  Oh and again keep in mind that most of the low star reviews are people bitching that they are too bright, you know Ron White would say about that right?

Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TspAz.com

PS – The Ron White link above comes with an adult language warning.  I will also say for some it may need a Trigger Warning so make sure you locate the nearest “Safe Space” before clicking the link if this applies to you.

Streamlight Stylus Pro USB Rechargeable Light – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Remember you can always find the Streamlight Stylus Pro USB Rechargeable Light.  Any long term follower of my podcast and blog will know I am a huge fan of the original Streamlight Stylus Pro.  I have been recommending that model for more than 5 years.

Well during our recent workshop a guy walks up to me and shows me this one.  It is basically everything that is wonderful about the original but it is rechargeable with any USB port.  It does cost more, coming in at about 41 dollars vs. the original at about 21 dollars.  So the question is, is the convenience of rechargeable and savings on batteries worth the difference in cost?

The lithium ion battery will give you 3.5 hours of light on one charge where as the original will give you 6.5 hours on one set of alkaline batteries.  Call that half as good, but, the lithium battery will have a life span of about 300 recharges, or 150 sets of AAA alkaline batteries.  That would be about 75 dollars in AAA based on bulk pricing of Duracell AAAs.

That gives us a cost of 96 dollars on the original compared to 42 on the rechargeable.  A 54 dollar savings.  If you do wear it out you have a few options.

The best is to buy the replacement lithium ion battery that Streamlight offers for this, it runs 15 bucks.  The battery pack though is essentially two lithium ion AAAs in a solid pack, this means yes you could just drop some rechargeable AAAs in it and rock on.  Or you can drop in any AAAs as a stop gap.  Yes while you can’t recharge it with regular old alkaline batteries, they will run it just fine.  This means you have multiple options and I love that.

So which one do I recommend now?  Frankly the one you prefer, they are both outstanding lights and represent outstanding value.  So check out the Streamlight Stylus Pro USB Rechargeable Light or the original Streamlight Stylus Pro today.
