Mr. Harris came to his current position to do full time work on the development and implementation of hydrogen, biomass and solar related energy systems after spending 10 years in the Aero-Thermal Dynamics department of the Scientific Labs of Chrysler Corporation.

Steve is always full of great ideas, knowledge and projects we can use to improve our personal energy independence and today is no exception. The work that went into these two shows took over a month of work and an investment of over 3,000 dollars. Every item mentioned was purchased, tested and personally used by Steve to insure all the systems he teaches you about will preform as expected.

Episode-794- Chad Kuntz on Back Up Generators

Stand By Generators are an Excellent Option for Back Up Power

Stand By Generators are an Excellent Option for Back Up Power

Join me today as I welcome Chad Kuntz an Electrical Engineer with 10 years of experience working for large utility company building substation generation facilities with back up power redundancy.

Today he joins us to discuss generator systems for our homes, sizing a generator to your needs and deciding between DIY vs. professional installation depending on your ability and system requirements.

Personally I have found that most sales people who call themselves “experts” or “consultants” in the generator industry tend to attempt to sell you the largest system possible vs. address your actual needs.   So I am very happy to have Chad with us today to discuss things from the view of a professional making this decision for himself and his family.

Special Note – I am running a sale on the MSB from now until Dec. 15th.
Full Details Here.

Join me today as we discuss…

Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome EX – Power Inverter Test One

This video will be the first in a series of test I will be doing with the 400 Watt inverter function of the Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome EX. In this test I ran a Sony Vario Laptop playing a DVD and a Seville Classic Tower Fan on Medium Speed.  The Laptop was run with out the battery to insure the results measured the actual power draw.  In an actual power outage of course you would not do that.

Some additional tests will measure the PC doing various tasks both with and with out the battery, running a DSL modem, running a small television and DVD player and some other ideas I have.

  • This device has a lot going for it,  some features include….
  • 600 cranking amp auto jump starter
  • 260 PSI high power motor air compressor
  • 400 watt AC power inverter, high intensity LED light
  • Built-in AM/FM radio with iPod™ input
  • 2 AC Outlets and 1 DC outlets

I have used the jump starter and it worked perfectly,  we also use the radio feature by our pool and on our decks often.  I have used the compressor and it was effective but not stellar, certainly good enough to air up your tire enough to get to better services.  I firmly believe that one of these belongs in every car or truck you own.  The tests I am doing with the inverter for back up power is really more a nice to have, the main function of this device is to keep you mobile, informed and with lighting on the road.

Note that even when the power was to low to run the devices that the light and radio still worked for a long time.

Episode-453- Listener Phone Calls 6-11-10

So it is another call in Friday despite the fact that the ass clowns doing directional boring shut down the neighborhoods power for a few hours.  Today the show was delayed, though I could have broadcasted on back up power it would have been hard to do a listener call show with out firing up the generator and waking up my night shift working neighbor.

Anyway we are back and ready to go, the final three calls by the way came in just this AM after I posted an alert on our Face Book Fan Page, if you are not our fan on Facebook, you should consider joining to get alerts like this via facebook.

Join me today as I take your calls on…

  • The effect of monetary policy on the American Revolution
  • Using coffee to deal with an allergic reaction
  • Using plantain as a drawing agent for infections of venomous bites
  • The eventual effect of the oil leak on gas prices
  • How to bug out to the forest if you must
  • Using gray water for irrigation and dealing with black water
  • How the Icelandic Volcano effected cardiac patients in the U.S.
  • What is the best choice for a “jump pack” for back up power
  • What are my top related books for new perspective preppers (check my book list)
  • How do you calculate what really equals a 30 or 60 day supply of food
  • Thoughts on container growing for the person who will be moving soon

Episode-314- Planning to Bug In

So if the SHTF in most instances you plan to bug in, you have your generator, you have your food, you have a means of defense and you are prepared for whatever may come, or are you.  Today we step back a bit from the obvious and from some common thinking that isn’t very realistic to examine how prepared we are for bugging in.  Please note even if you “bug out” you are going to another location and once you get there, guess what you are going to be doing, bugging in of course.

Join in today as we discuss…

  • Two new eBooks free for Support Brigade Members
  • Storing food for everyone possibly even some for neighbors and definitely for your pets and stock
  • The need for personal hygiene products, bigger then you might think it is
  • Back up power sources both short and long term
  • The advantages and failings of generators
  • Why you need to plan to keep the garden growing
  • The need for and functionality of “security protocols” including during increased threat periods
  • Why you need to quickly contact all family/close friends at the beginning of a SHTF especially if you are bugging in
  • The importance of taking an inventory and sorting into needs, good to have and don’t need it at all
  • How inventory and sorting will help you in barter situations
  • Keeping communications up as long as possible including radio, TV, Ham, MURS, etc.
  • The importance of maintaining a sense of normalcy during a bug in
  • How drills are about more then finding weaknesses, they are also about acclamation
