Episode-1291- Kermit Jones author of “Prepper Pete Prepares”

Prepper Pete Teaches Kids about Preparedness.

Prepper Pete Teaches Kids about Preparedness.

Join me for a conversation with Kermit Jones about Prepping with Kids: Don’t Scare – Prepare!  Kermit is the author of a new children’s book series based on the character “Prepper Pete” who is the star character of Kermit’s first book, “Prepper Pete Prepares“.

Prepping makes complete sense – to those who prepare. But we all know the blank stares, looks of confusion, and even snickers that sometimes come when we try to explain our reasons to others.

I mean, how do explain the obvious, right?

But even if your in-laws, out-laws, friends or family, just don’t “get it” – you can’t escape the need to prepare those who literally depend on you – your children.

If you’ve seen shows like “Doomsday Preppers” – then you’ve got a pretty nifty list of what NOT to do. Going through a dry-run with you kids can be a great way to bond, but sometimes “how” you do something is just as important (if not more so) than “what” you do. In fact, you can teach a lot of skills to your kids without ever mentioning the end of the world, zombies, or even disasters.

For example, Kermit wanted to show his kids how to make a fire with a magnesium fire starter (with the flint down the side). Now, he could have said, “Okay, daddy’s gonna show you how to use this because one day your life may depend on it, and if you can’t figure it out, you’re gonna freeze to death or be eaten by wild animals in the pitch black of night!”

Sure, that would have gotten the point across, but is it really necessary!?

Instead, his approach took a slightly different approach: “Hey, how would you like to learn to make fire without using matches or a lighter!?” Oooooh… a little excitement combined with a fun challenge.

“And we’ll even make s’mores with it!” Instant sell.

During the process, they were still able to discuss types of tinder, kindling, fire-building philosophies and the like. Because it was tied to something emotionally important to them (yes, the s’mores), this way kids not only remember, but they want to do it again in the near future!

Michael Kaye has worked in the technology arena for more than 17 years, 11 in Executive Management and the last 7 as the Founder/CEO of a successful Atlanta based IT Consulting Company.

He has been married to his loving wife “Cindy” since 2006 and is a devoted step-father to “Skylar”. Michael is also very active with supporting several local and national charity and professional non-profit organizations.

Over the many years of his career he has worked with and had frank conversations with some of America’s more wealthy individuals, primary technology sector CEOs.  Some of these very stark economic conversations led Michael to a prepping lifestyle, the hard task of getting his wife on board and eventually to writing a series of novels based on his real life experience and knowledge.

Michael joins us today to discuss his first book in the series, “The Awakening” and how it is both a work of fiction and an accurate assessment of the nation’s current economic health.

Episode-1247- David Nash on 52 Prepper Projects

David's New Book, Prepping Week by Week for a Year.

Prepping Week by Week for a Year.

Today David Nash of TNGun.com returns to TSP. David is a full time emergency manger by trade, and an advocate of self-reliance and personal preparedness by avocation. He is also instructor certified in a variety of topics such as firearms, terrorism response, WMD, and incident command. He’s written two books, and runs a DIY focused prepper website, based around his training business “The Shepherd School”.

Today he joins us first to talk about prepping from a DIY standpoint. David feels prepping is full of $500 problems, but if you only have $50, you have to use other ways of making up the difference.  We also discuss David’s new book “52 Prepper Projects.

We also discuss his recent experience in being filmed completing several projects by the producers of “Doomsday Preppers”.  It sounds like Nat Geo is at least getting it a little bit.  They seem to now be focusing more on “projects” rather then making preppers out to be full on loons.  Yet as you will hear, they are still baiting those that appear on the show, forcing them to say they are prepping for a specific event and creating nonsensical false drama in the show.

Episode-1220- Dan Haight on the Dystopian Novel Flotilla

Daniel Haight is an emerging science fiction novelist with many published short stories. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, he is equal parts ‘geek’ and ‘blue collar’ with a love for science fiction, emerging technology and working with his hands.

Haight has been writing stories since he was 12, but began writing professionally after he ‘gave it a try’ and found that people enjoyed his work. As a single parent, he works as a lowly IT guy during the day and writes in his off-hours.

Flotilla is an apocalyptic science-fiction story in which Jim, a slacker teen alcoholic is thrown into the ocean, literally and figuratively, to become both a survivor and a hero. He leaves rehab to start life aboard a floating city filled with strange and dangerous characters who work at farming edible fish and other enterprises. Jim sees this as an opportunity to re-connect with his estranged father, Rick, but he quickly finds out that second chances can come with strings attached.

Daily adventures and brushes with death give Jim the chance to grow up and screw up. His new home serves as both the classroom and crucible he needs to put his past behind him. At the same time, the Colony is also a dangerous ecosystem. Drug-dealing, human trafficking and gambling create fortunes that people will lie, cheat and kill to protect.

The tension explodes when a terrorist attack hits nearby Los Angeles. Jim and his sister are safe for the moment aboard the Colony but Rick is drafted and taken ashore. Now the kids are left helpless to deal with angry drug pirates and crooked cops. Will Jim be able save himself and his sister? Is doing the right thing always the right choice?

This is a whirlwind adventure over two summers that paints a vivid picture of adventure and hardship. It is also a deeply moving look at the impact of sustainable technology on some hilariously dysfunctional, flawed characters. Readers are finding Flotilla to be a stirring coming-of-age tale that brings together fathers and sons and conquers loss through courage and inner strength.

Episode-990- Glen Tate Author of 299 Days on Under the Radar Prepping and Family Life

The First of the 299 Days Series

The First of the 299 Days Series

Today you get an opportunity to win a signed set of the first editions of the first two books in the 299 Days series.  Not just by Glen but by me as well, make sure to pay attention to how to do that in today’s episode.

Glen Tate is the author of the ten-book prepper novel series “299 Days” published by Prepper Press. The books describe an average guy who prepares for, and lives through, a partial collapse of the United States.

Glen joins us today for a bit of a look at the next two books in the series, an update of feedback thus far on the release of the first two books and how people are opening minds with the first two books.  We also discuss prepping with a reluctant spouse and how it can be done under the radar if necessary along with the importance of never saying “I told you so” in such important matters.

The story line of 299 Days is as follows,

In it, the main character, Grant Matson, has a job that allows him to see what’s wrong with government. He realizes he needs to prepare for what’s coming and he does so. His wife, Lisa, is reluctant to prepare because she thinks things are just fine. When the civil unrest and political collapse hit in a dramatic way, it is undeniable that they need to leave their Olympia, Washington home and head to their cabin. But, Lisa is still reluctant; she desperately wants things to remain “normal.”

Out at the cabin, a collection of amazing–yet real–people assemble. They create their own community because the government isn’t functioning in their area. They have to work together and, as a community, they manage to achieve some impressive results. Unlike most prepper stories, in 299 Days America suffers a partial collapse. The utilities stay one (due to a spell-binding plot twist) and the government functions in larger cities. People in rural areas still get some food and services from the government, but must increasingly rely on themselves. There are no zombies or cannibalism; 299 Days describes a much more likely partial collapse scenario.

Grant’s friends, who work in government, describe how things continue to go down hill in the city and how the government is trying to maintain control. They describe exactly why the government, as big and powerful as it once was, cannot control things. Many in the military and law enforcement step in to stop the bad things; others in the military and law enforcement perpetuate the bad things.

After a while out at the cabin, some important visitors arrive and present Grant with a difficult choice. Eventually, the Patriots–the side Grant is on–are forced to take on what’s left of the former government. There is a huge battle. In the end, Grant has an important job at the beginning of the rebuilding.

Glen is a moderator on the TSP forum under the name “Heavy G.” He lives and works in Olympia, Washington where he has a front row seat to the corruption in government. Much like the main character in the series, the author is a forty-something resident of the capitol of Washington State, Olympia, and is a very active prepper. He grew up in the remote logging town of Forks, Washington.

“Glen” keeps his identity a secret so he won’t lose his job because, in his line of work, being a prepper and questioning the motives of government is not appreciated.
