Episode-2308- How Close is the Original US Government to an Anarchy

It isn’t a trick question, also note I didn’t way it was or even how close it was, I just asked the question.  The answer is a lot closer than you might imagine.  Today we are going to discuss the constitution, the original version and some things most people never learn about, therefore never understand about it.

Given my position as a voluntarist, people often wonder why I even care about the constitution.  I think by the time this episode is over the reasons will be clear.

In short though I view most of our elected officials as thieves, but thieves with a contract that they should at minimum adhere to.  The sad fact is most Americans have zero understanding of that contract, its genesis or their role in it.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • Why do I even care since if find the state illegitimate
  • Before we begin lets separate principle from politics of the day
  • Why I claim the federal government is not a party to the contract that is the constitution
  • Why the bill of rights should have never applied to the states individually
  • How incorporation of the bill of rights reduced federalism
  • Why the US is both a democracy and a republic and how little a republic means by itself
  • How the 17th amendment stripped state power and why it should be repealed
  • Why a convention of the states should be called, why it won’t be
  • In the end, so what, why does this matter if nothing is going to change

Episode-1874- You Might Be an Anarchist If

plato

Despite this phraseology today’s show isn’t a play on Jeff Foxworthy’s you might be a red neck if.  Today we won’t be either poking fun at anarchists or talking about the things they do and say, as such.  Rather we are going to talk about the core of anarchism and reveal to many who thing anarchism is radical, dangerous, won’t work, etc, that they in fact are at their core already anarchists.

How is this possible?  Well anarchism isn’t a way you vote like democrat, republican or even libertarian, it is a philosophy of morality at its core.  It actually comes down to core beliefs of right and wrong.  Such at taking the legitimate property of another is wrong.  Using force or coercion is wrong, period.

It is a belief that you own yourself, and an acknowledgement that others also own themselves.  My hope is this show will reach many that are currently closed minded to anarchism.  Those who think “that can’t work” or “its never been done”, because frankly it has, you can read about it here.

Beyond that though, humans have been on this planet for a long time.  The oldest human tools date to about 2.4 million years ago and were found in a cave in China.  Even if we shrunk that down to say 200,000 years, the state as a form of control is only about 5000 years old and it wasn’t everywhere at once.  Franky humans have lived as anarchists far longer as a species than we have lived as statists.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • Why you might be an anarchist and not know it
  • The core beliefs of anarchists
    • Theft is wrong no matter who does it
    • Force is wrong unless it is used in defense
    • People own themselves
    • No person should be forced to participate in anything they don’t want to be part of
  • The pragmatism of the modern anarchist
    • It isn’t going to happen today or next week, or next decade
    • The way you live is what you control
    • Only a goal of no state can ever shrink the state
    • Voluntary associations can exist now, so lets do that
    • If you can solve a problem without the state, do so
    • Technology is our greatest tool for human evolution
  • How becoming an anarchist by choice changes your world view
    • Might no longer makes right
    • War becomes an absolute last resort
    • You stop focusing on things outside of your control
    • You find an “inner peace” not too dissimilar from some religions
    • Your obligations increase they do not decrease
    • You become a systems thinker and solutions orentied
  • Final Thoughts

Episode-1582- Why Blind Patriotism is a Greater Danger than State Oppression

This is Not Patriotism!

This is Not Patriotism!

I could simply say as to today’s topic that blind patriotism is a greater danger to liberty than state oppression because the former enables the latter but that would be an over simplification.  This is actually a highly complex and I believe a very important subject.

I have been struggling with how to explain what I have to say today for a long time.  Yesterday I made two posts on facebook that stirred up some shit storms, the first was this in response to the outrage at a shirt with an upside down flag on it.

The second post was my overall feelings about the flag itself, where I express disgust at those who damage our flag but I also acknowledge their right to do so if said flag is their property.

The most concerning thing to me that people said in response to these posts was, “if you don’t like America the way it is, leave”.

Really?  So should all of our forefathers that didn’t like slavery of left?  Should all of our great grandparents that found it wrong that women could not vote have left?  Should all of the people who found the 18th Amendment to be insane just have left America?  Should the people who worked to pass the Civil Rights Act have just instead left America because they didn’t like the way it was?

I am sorry folks, America doesn’t work that way.  Love it or leave it is not patriotic, it is the opposite of patriotism, it is simply saying accept the will of the State or shut up or leave.  It is also extremely dangerous thinking, today we examine why.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • If you blame the individual solider you are part of the problem too
  • A story of a Nazi solider that saved my father in laws life
  • My post about the flag shirt and my follow up about the flag itself
  • Be angry with the system, not those who have been fooled by it
  • What it means when you place a symbol above the ideals it is to represent
  • Why our nation should not be at war at all right now
  • Why you can yes support our troops and not support their mission
  • How your government actually views the military you revere
  • Why those who served the longest and gave the most get offended by these things
  • Why we should understand their offense and respect them as people
  • Why American ideals in my view are actually anarchist ideals
  • Why the most patriotic thing you can do is speak against your government when it is wrong
  • The real danger of blind patriotism, and the larger danger of anarchist arrogance

Episode-1556- Toby Hemenway on Liberation Permaculture

Toby Hemenway - Author - Teacher - Anarchist

Toby Hemenway – Author – Teacher – Anarchist

Toby Hemenway is the author of Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, which was awarded the Nautilus Gold Medal in 2011, was named by the Washington Post as one of the ten best gardening books of 2010, and for the last eight years has been the best-selling permaculture book in the world.

Toby has been an adjunct professor at Portland State University, Scholar-in-Residence at Pacific University, and has taught over sixty 72-hour permaculture design courses. He has presented lectures and workshops at major sustainability conferences such as Bioneers, SolFest, and EcoFarm, and at Duke University, Tufts University, University of Minnesota, University of Delaware and many other educational venues.

His writing has appeared in magazines such as Natural Home, Whole Earth Review, and American Gardener. He has contributed book chapters for WorldWatch Institute and to several publications on ecological design.

After obtaining a degree in biology from Tufts University, Toby worked for many years as a researcher in genetics and immunology, first in academic laboratories including Harvard and the University of Washington in Seattle, and then at Immunex, a major medical biotech company. At about the time he was growing dissatisfied with the direction biotechnology was taking, he discovered permaculture, a design approach based on ecological principles that creates sustainable landscapes, homes, and workplaces.

A career change followed, and Toby and his wife, Kiel (key-ell), spent ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon. He was the editor of Permaculture Activist, a journal of ecological design and sustainable culture, from 1999 to 2004. He moved to Portland, Oregon in 2004, and spent six years developing urban sustainability resources there. Toby and his wife now live in Sebastopol, California.

Toby joins us today to discuss his emerging anarcho liberation view on permaculture.  How permaculture decentralizes resources, compels critical thinking and has yields almost impossible to quantify and therefore tax.  We discuss how the future of environmental sustainability and human freedom are largely linked and dependent upon one another.

cow2wartBob Wells Plant of the WeekCowart Muscadine Grape Vine The Cowart Muscadine is  adaptable from zone 6 to zone 9. The Cowart Muscadine Grape is a self fertile variety that produces a juicy and delicious muscadine grape that will be perfect for eating when fresh off the vine. Cowart Muscadines produce grapes with colors ranging from deep purple to nearly black. Cowart’s are grown in large commercial vineyards as a self fertile pollinator that is very productive and also ripens early.

Female muscadines require cross-pollination to bear fruit, so don’t forget to plant a self fertile pollinator variety like the Cowart nearby to pollinate any female muscadines you plant. Due to the fact that the Cowart Muscadine is a native species in North America it is more disease resistant than the traditional European grapes, making them perfect for planting in your edible garden.

Find this plant and more at BobWellsNursery.com – Bob Wells Nursery specializes in anything edible: Fruit trees, Berry Plants, Nut Trees, as well as the hard to find Specialty Trees.

Episode-1428- Libertas a Virtual Nation

What Would a Virtual Nation be Like

What Would a Virtual Nation be Like

In Episode 1421 I discussed both the Estonian E-Citizen Program and Ecuador’s new Digital Currency and asked a simple question, could digital currencies and the concept of E-Citizenry be used to create a virtual nation.

I think this is a valuable thought experiment and I have some ideas I want to share today.  The goal is to get a discussion going about what can be done, vs. what can’t be done.  What might work vs. why nothing can work.

As part of this I created a forum thread to discuss a Virtual Nation’s Constitution would be like.  There has been some interesting discussion and in particular some clear examples of limited thinking demonstrated in it.  Part of this is my fault, for calling it a constitution.  That framed it in the world of Statism vs. Nationalism.  A better term would have been a Technical Specification.

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • First I don’t want to be in charge, this isn’t my thing it is a thing
  • Why we really should consider this
  • Why we would not need, presidents, senators, etc.
  • What makes a nation accepted by other nations and where VNs have an advantage
    • Land
    • Hard Force
    • Money
    • Population
    • Soft Force
    • Defensive Force
    • Defined Borders
  • What is a nation vs. what is a state
    • Nation – a large group of people who share a common language, culture, ethnicity, descent or history.
    • State – an organized community living under one government
  • How the economy might work
    • A set amount of contribution to the national reserve is established
    • A new citizen buys something like bitcoin
    • The bitcoin is exchanged for the nations currency
    • The bitcoin or other currency is held as a reserve
    • The two currencies are pegged to a fixed exchange rate
    • Citizens do business in the virtual nation with the nations currency
    • The reserve is a vault that citizens can buy currency from or convert it to an outside currency
    • The action of buying currency is what creates it
    • Yes Bitcoin already does a lot of this, sort of
  • Why do it?
    • As an example
    • As peaceful revolution and protest
    • To assert individual liberty however we can
  • Replacing roles of the state
    • Conflict resolution (courts)
    • Education
    • Security
    • Privacy
    • Leadership
    • Commerce
    • Product Quality Assurance
    • What Can You Add
  • Final Thoughts
