What an awesome show. I\'m just about your age, but I grew up in the suburbs. My dad was still a boy from North Georgia, and had lots of the same experiences as you. In our subdivision we had a big garden, jarred fruit from the trees, and ate deer all winter. But so much of what was probably in dad\'s family - making a subsistence living a year round way of life from all local resources, degenerated into mere hobbies. This left me with even fewer skills than he possessed.

I\'m in my 30\'s and have 3 boys. There is such a huge need to get back to this knowledge of how to live independantly. I feel it more and more urgent to teach my sons how to do it, too.

Thanks for sharing a year in Penn. with us.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Jack,

Great show. I had the same experiences growing up in western PA. When I was young, I thought I was digging fishing worms for the first day of trout season, but was really turning over our garden for my Dad. We always paid cash for our "new" used cars. Our house had a spring that ran through a pit in our basement. I kept a native brookie there for a summer before letting it go.

My cousin tells me that folks now call the cops when he sights in his rifle. It used to be a Sunday tradition: Watch the Steelers game and then sight in the deer rifle before it got dark. You had to shoot fast, but iron sights were never far off.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

awesome show Jack. Reminds me of my time growing up in the northern part of Vermont. Farming community. That's what people did.

Gold '88 cavalier here. Bought that from a farmer for $400. Had to scrub the manure out of it and never quite got rid of the "funk" drove that thing until it was so rusty the a pocket that held the shock in the back end gave way. Still miss that car...
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Great Show Jack,
I am (horrors ;-) 54, and we grew up on a dairy farm in the Northeast where we grew most of our own food and slaughtered a few of the cows to eat.Dad had several down turns due to brucelosis, a car hitting one of he cows(and us getting sued),etc.so it was pretty hand to mouth at times. So,I can relate. it's agreat way to grow up actually, and very handy in knowing how to be ready to fend for oneself.Parts of the talk reminded me of permaculture principles too, like earth care (not taking the fish with an iffy population), people care and fair share (helping the elders who were no longer able to garden by giving of your surplus).
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Jack,

This is a great episode. Personal connections are really the secret to talk radio, which your show really is minus commercials. You are a great story teller and this is close to the best episode you've ever done. Great job!.

1st car was a 1984 Mercedes Benz. It was 2004 when we purchased it. It had only 21,000 miles on it. Kept it for 4 years until the Transmission and Engine both quit. then in 2008 I bought my fathers 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck. I'm 21 years old and have never had a new car. I never will.
