Barrina LED Grow Light 6 Packs – Amazing Price Today — 25 Comments

  1. Hi.  it appears these lights are not available in the pink variety in Canada.  do you have any experience with the yellow daylight ones?

    • I do not, I would think they would work well but can not say for sure. If I had to pick one I’d try the daylight ones.

    • I ordered the whites to test vs the pinks I installed a while ago, and can say they appear to be made by the same company.  All the parts are 100% interchangeable.  The whites are slightly brighter to the eye and to my phone’s light sensor.  They are growing just as well as the pinks so far.  It’s too early in my test to say which is better.  I’ll probably end up mixing them 3×3 with the pinks.  Amazon link below for reference only as they are currently out of stock.

NOTE: Be sure to get the 24W version of the whites or pinks!  I see several 2ft options rated for 10W, that’s good for mood lighting, not growing plants.  🙂

  2. Thanks for getting back to me.  I have been growing under lights since one of your hydro shows in December last year and I am expanding.

  3. I am looking for grow lights as the Barrinas are no longer available.   I  found a 21 inch grow light on Menards website and wonder if you think it would work.  It does not seem that the lights plug into each other like the Barrina but does seem easy to set up and use for a newbie.  Menards also has a mini greenhouse that looks similar to the one you recommend.  It is $30 but by the time you add in shipping, processing fee and sales tax it is about $50.  Thank you for all the help and reassurance you are providing to folks.   https://www.menards.com/main/lighting-ceiling-fans/indoor-lighting/under-cabinet-lighting/patriot-lighting-reg-led-white-plug-in-grow-light/sleu22gr/p-1527143386948.htm

  4. Thank you!  I saw those and wondered about the 4 ft size vs 2 ft size and hooking them up in the mini greenhouse.  Would you just let the 4 ft stick out on either end and not use the plastic cover? I am following your setup as closely as I can as I have no experience.  BTW, the 2 and 4 ft Barrinas are back in stock at Amazon.  And when you do your “hysteria” voice on the podcast, it makes me laugh every time!

  5. Thanks for the update Jack.  I couldn’t find any of the 2 footers in stock when I order but the 4 footers seem to work nice.  Seeds are slow to go.

They’re on a wood shelf surrounded by cardboard.  Germination seems pretty slow. Would I be better using. Plastic to keep in humidity? Maybe a grow mat?   Trying to keep the system budget friendly. Using kratky in pans under the lights

    Thanks for what you do.

  6. IMO, If you can get them, you’re better off getting the 2′ lights, as they give you more flexibility in how you can use them. If you need the 4′ length, just stick two together.

In my vertical farm, if I’d ordered 2′ lights first, I would have mounted them front to back instead of left to right (with a 24″ deep shelf). This would allow me to rig them to be at different heights as needed (made a little rack I can raise and lower for each side (left & right) I can pull up and down with a string).

Also 2′ lights work better with my ‘budget’ mixing tray version of the VF (version 2). $5×2=$10 for 2’x4′ growing space instead of $100 for the deep water trays (that have been out of stock for a while).

Free Coroplast season is coming up! Stock Up! (known by some as ‘election season’). 1001 uses!

    • Good point Insidious!

I will add it also allows for a high light – moderate light split on a 4 foot shelf.  Lettuce or micros do not requires as much light as say tomato you are starting to put out later.  I actually did this with my top flood and drain shelf with 2 footers.  I ran 4’s across the top (2) then added two 2s to one side.

  7. Update on my previous post regarding the full spectrum white lights vs pink…

I returned/replaced the Monios labeled lights with Kihung labeled simply because Monios did not include the aluminum reflectors at that time (they do now).  Again, the actual light fixtures are IDENTICAL, and parts are fully interoperable across Monios, Kihung, and Barrina.

I’ve run the Barrina pinks against the Kihung whites for a few months now, and see no difference in plant performance or flavor.

Note that Kihung sells in 8packs vs 6packs, so while the total price is higher, the price per light is usually lower than the other vendors.

    Kihung 2ft 24W 8pack, 192W total $80

    Kihung 4ft 42W 8pack,  336W total $130 (and offering a $10 coupon as I type)

    https://www.amazon.com/Fixture-Spectrum-Output-Sunlight-Replacement/dp/B0811WGKBC/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=Kihung&qid=1598374524&sr=8-9

IMO as long as you’re buying the 2ft/24W or 4ft/42W fixtures, you can’t go wrong with Monios, Kihung, or Barrina in pink or white. Just compare prices per light and buy whichever one has the best price at the moment.

Good stuff, and thanks for finding these Jack!

      • Glad to help.  With the branding stickers removed these different “brands” are indistinguishable from each other.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re all actually manufactured in the same factory.

FWIW one interesting benefit of the white lights, in case you live near Karens or in HOA hell…  The pink/purple lights draw far less unwanted attention or curiosity.

  8. I have been growing greens in this system since May and works wonderfully. Still using aluminum roaster pans as my trays. I have upgraded shelf to the 5 rack steel on wheels(like Jack has) as quickly outgrew the 4 ft shelf since I do cut and come again. The only issue is that mosquitos breed in the water. Have just recently learned about Mosquito BT pellets and going to try them.

  9. Has anyone used these on a hydro system to grow plants out, not just start? I saw in the write up it mentions they are better to start but I’m looking to build a hydro set up in my basement for the long winters. If these are not your first choice so you have any other recommendations?

  10. I’ve been growing lettuce & greens with these in DWC non stop since Feb 2020. I’ve bought both 4ft and 2ft Since that time and some were white and most blurple but they both work great. I’ve not had a failure of one yet. Fun fact, connect a 4ft & 2ft and they fit perfectly on a 77” wide heavy duty shelf system from the box stores. We run 3 shelves with three rows of light per shelf and have produced $1000s in fresh lettuce, herbs, plant starts and Asian greens. Jack, you really are a jerk since now all I ever eat is fresh clean home grown produce!

      • We use 10 gallon tubs on a shelf with lids (totes) inside we run an air stone. Put lights on timer and watch it grow. I started experimenting in my garage right before C-19 and settled on the simplest method. My wife got really excited about it and then she completely took over and started teaching others. She’s developed school STEM curriculum, online course and even free YouTube lessons. It’s very simple and withstands power failures well. Check out her work at Hydro4Food.com.
