ProPur vs Berkey filter elements
« on: January 27, 2012, 01:31:27 PM »
Anyone have any thoughts on Propur vs Berkey water filters? I will also be getting the fluoride filters.  It seems that their filter materials are different both in the main filter as well as the secondary fluoride attachment. The fluoride filters seem to be completely different materials with one being activated alumina and the other being activated carbon.  The filters can be used with both systems and cost similar, so I'm trying to decide which is better.

Just a thought from a cursory glance at the propur site, but they compare their filter to berkey for NSF-42 which isn't likely what you care about on this forum.  NSF-53 is the more meaningful one.  IIRC berkey is NSF-53 certified, presumably propur isn't or they'd have it on their comparison chart.

Have you decided which one to get or have you gotten one yet?  I'm curious and would like to know what you think of your purchase.  I bought a Berkey about a year ago and have had nothing but problems with it.  I hate to say it because I desperately want it to work well, but I practically tiptoe around mine so the filters don't break off the base and the spigots won't start leaking again.

After many returns, I have some filters that haven't broken and a spigot I've formed a love-hate relationship with, but if I speak soothingly to it, it might just keep working for me for a few more months.  ;)  Hopefully this is the end of my troubles with our Berkey because I love the water we get from it when it works!  Tastes wonderful and I hate fluoride!

Hi - I just came across this.  The manufacturer of Berkey water filters did a field test of the Berkey vs Propur in response to many questions such as this.  Here's a link:
