Nice program today. Several garden books including Rodale's Organic Gardening describe wonderful results with mulching your potatoes with hay or straw instead of hilling with dirt. The mulch must be deep enough to prevent light getting to the developing tubers - the light would make them green and unfit to eat - 12" to 18" deep mulch is recommended. Evidently you add this gradually and build it up. Then at harvest time, you just part away the straw or hay or whatever mulch you used and pick up the potatoes! No digging at all. I am trying this now to see what happens. Has anyone else tried this?
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
