Today its Friday so it’s time for expert council show. To ask a question for a show like this, just send an email to me at jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com with “TSPC Expert” in the subject line.

Today the expert council answers questions on home schooling, TENS devices, tent living, herbal teas, cooking, bees, cryptocurrency and more.

In the body of your email first tell me the council member your question is for. Second ask your question concisely in one to two sentences maximum. Third any and all details after that. This is the formula to give you the best chance of getting on the air.

I do what I can to get as many of your questions as possible on the air but can’t always get to all of them. Our council is made of a wide variety of experts in everything from the tactical to the practical and everything in between.

  1. Hey Jack,

    I’m pretty new to listening to the podcast, so I’m not sure if this has been discussed already, but have you considered putting timestamps for each subject? This would be very helpful on episodes like this, where I personally have no interest in herbal teas (I’m sure many do though), but have interest in other subjects. With the app (Pocket Casts) that I use to listen to your podcast, timestamps become “clickable”, so I can skip to a section that pertains to me. I understand if you don’t do this so people listen through your advertisements, etc, but I wasn’t sure if you knew about this or not. Thanks!

      A listener started doing it one time, she put out a tip jar sort of thing. She said if she could make say 25 bucks a week doing it, that it would be worth it. She stopped after about a month, since that point NO I HAVE NOT CONSIDERED IT.

      I hope that makes sense.

  2. If you’re smoking pork butts for a party, I highly recommend throwing them in way earlier than you think they should and just holding them in a cooler to rest when they’re done like Jack mentions. There’s few things more stressful than having a bunch of people coming over in a few minutes and the butts you’re smoking are NOWHERE NEAR the temperature they’re supposed to be at. It’s really pretty crazy how long a big chunk of meat will stay at temperature in a small cooler wrapped in foil with some kitchen towels.

    I try to plan my cooks so that everything is off the smoker and resting a minimum of an hour before I actually want it done. Best case scenario, you rest your meat for a while which only makes it better when you finally pull it. Worst case scenario, you’ve got lots of time to get creative with finishing it in the oven or doing other tricks to speed up the cook before you’ve got guests wondering whether or not you have any idea what you’re doing.

    Smoked pulled pork is seriously the ultimate party food. People are always impressed by how well it turns out, and it’s one of the simplest (and cheapest) meats to cook for a large group. I’m doing two giant butts for a BBQ next weekend, I can’t wait. Definitely going to try the apples and onions thing, that sounds incredible.

    Love your answer on the herb tea. One question though, what do you do (if anything) with the fresh leaves before placing them in the water? Crush, cut, nothing?

    Mike and Sue,

    Thank you much for your input! We have no intention to put pressure on our son and daughter to go to college, but since our son currently shows some interest in engineering and space science we suspect college might be in his future. He’s already doing very well in math, but in line with your advice I think we’ll emphasize more writing projects for him. I think the journal idea is a great one… I’m going to start planting the idea in his head now, so with luck he’ll have some ideas and extra motivation as the summer progresses. I’ll send a follow up email to Jack with my email address so he can forward it along to you two. I can’t guarantee the journal idea will keep his interest, but it’s worth trying out…

    P.S. – To some extent it’s an adventure… but since our son’s already been here before and has been accustomed to life in the U.S., he tends to spend as much time complaining about the lack of water parks and McDonald’s than he does in appreciating the novelty of the location. Kids… what can you do? 😉

  5. Hey Nick, Love that you’re following your son’s interests! We’re going to start a writing project with our kids on our own website so let me know when you get started and we can link up. Our youngest son at this time is 9 🙂 I’m sure he’d be really interested in your adventure and he also has an engineering brain.

    With our older kids I’m always surprised at their memories and what they loved in their childhood. They’re also really grateful for the adventure so sometimes what you can do is have the adventure knowing they’ll have a life experience that does’t match up with anyone else.
