Episode-2133- Expert Council Q&A for 12-15-17

Today its Friday so it’s time for expert council show. To ask a question for a show like this, just send an email to me at jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com with “TSPC Expert” in the subject line.

Today the expert council answers questions on herbal medicine, cooking, radios, knife making, websites, law enforcement, investing, rocket mass heaters and more.

In the body of your email first tell me the council member your question is for. Second ask your question concisely in one to two sentences maximum. Third any and all details after that. This is the formula to give you the best chance of getting on the air.

I do what I can to get as many of your questions as possible on the air but can’t always get to all of them. Our council is made of a wide variety of experts in everything from the tactical to the practical and everything in between.

To get more information on our Expert Council visit our “Meet the Expert Council Page” to learn more about them and their specific areas of expertise.

  1. Hi Nicole,

thanks so much for the detailed response. It means so much to me to receive your experienced advice.
I have a couple of follow up queries with which I hope you don’t mind.

You mentioned I should leave Word Press and go to WP Engine, Liquid, or Host Gator.  I am confused as I am already with Host Gator.  I have their Hatchling Plan, which is around $3 per month.  Are you talking about something on this page?

Is this something which your company, Liquid, also provides?  If so, how is this different from the “hatchling” plan I am currently on.

Sorry for the questions.  I do listen to your advice, and Jack’s advice on 5 minutes with Jack.  I currently don’t have any real monitisation on my website but for one piece of advertising which brings in around $5 to $10 a month.
Apart from the content I provide (which is stories of my adventures in homesteading and prepping as well as actual instructions on how to do things) I don’t have any products for sale.

  2. Regarding the “court of public opinion”… Maybe I’m being a little too jaded, but a part of me suspects that some of the journalists and activists pushing the sexual harassment/assault media (and especially social media) coverage are doing so because they hope to use it to eventually destroy political enemies of theirs (Trump probably chief among them).  I’m glad the issue is getting coverage, but I too am getting the ‘witch hunt’ vibe from some of this.  It’s such an emotionally charged topic that even unsubstantiated accusations probably work well for manipulating public opinion.  Ah well, just another day in the media’s fear/outrage/greed cycle.

  3. Hey thank you TSP expert counsel and happy holidays to you all.

Also thanks to the Leo for doing the right thing.

  4. Hi Dan,

First of all – sorry it took me so long to respond. I usually check in on comments for a few days after an expert council show but somehow missed your comment.

At host gator, I would upgrade to their business plan at a minimum which is currently $11 a month if you commit to a year, $17 if you go monthly. It allows you to get SSL which you should deploy on your site.  In your shoes, I would not go more than a year with any host. Who knows if they will be a good fit for three years…? 🙂

Accessing liquid web or wpengine through my company is no different than entering a relationship directly with the host. I only work with WP and Liquid at this time because we have been using them long enough that if there is a problem, we have good customer support. I have not developed a good support relationship with Host Gator, so I tend to guide our customers toward the hosts where I can make a phone call.

Pricing wise – all the hosts are in the same ballpark.

Quality wise, Host Gator is fine, so if you are on host gator, there is really no reason to move. But do consider upgrading to the plan that allows SSL. Google prefers SSL and if you ever add that shopping cart, you pretty much need it to work with card processors.
