One concept that many modern survivalists aspire to is to be less dependent on “the system“ or independent of “the system”. I know this seems like a great goal but the problem with it is that it is not “a system” or “the system” the reality is that we are dependent today on multiple interconnected systems.
Each of these systems is becoming more globalized and centralized and the dependence upon them in growing at an alarming rate. While there are more systems of dependency then the following today we will focus on what I consider the 8 largest systems of dependence.
It is only by beginning to break down each of these and evaluation of individual and societal dependence on each that we can begin as modern survivalists to become less dependent upon them and make better decisions about moving forward.
Join me today as we discuss…

The financial system
The debt system
The distribution system
The agricultural system
The energy system
The health system
The welfare system
The military industrial complex system

Note – Don’t skip the house keeping today, some cool free stuff is being given away.
It is time for another show based 100% on emails the audience has sent in to jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com Remember to submit content for a show like this.
Please realize I get hundreds of submissions a week and can only get about a dozen on the weekly feedback show. That said I do read them all and often put out many of them on facebook and twitter even if I don’t put them on the show.
The best way to make sure I read your question or comment is to put “question for jack” or something similar in the subject line of your email. This will also help to prevent accidental spam sorting.

David Consolvo has been growing his orchard in Virgina for over 23 years now. He originally began planting his orchard in a quest for better health and nutrition. Over the years he has found it to help his health both physical and mental in other ways simply by the joy of working in it, watching his trees grow and having the security of food close at hand.
Over the years Dave has also become a prepper and is a long time listener of our show. He has a root cellar he calls a “fruit cellar” and has integrated his ability to produce food into his emergency planning.

What are some of the best varieties to keep dependence on inputs low

A Pigs Life is a Good One at Simpson Family Farm
Darby Simpson is the owner of Simpson Family Farm, a 7th generation family farm (1828-present) and a lifelong Indiana resident Darby grew up not realy learning anything about farming, became a mechanical engineer.
He worked in the engineering field from 1994-2010. Began small scale pastured based meat farming (Joel Salatin style) in 2007. Grew the business while continuing to work off farm full time. In 2010 like many Americans he lost his job due to the recession and took the farm full time. The farm now provides his family with a full time income.
Darby’s family began homeschooling in 2011, and his family is now together everyday. In his words.
“We have a blessed life. I feel like Neo in the Matrix: I’ve unplugged from what society told me my life was supposed to look like – public school, college, cubical, fast food lifestyle.”
Today he joins us to discuss small scale, beyond organic production of pastured based meats & eggs (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, eggs) for the homesteader or for someone looking to begin their own business (full or part time).

Starting Seeds is Easy
I get a lot of questions from people who are looking to start plants from seeds vs. buying plants at the nursery. Many people struggle with seed starting for a variety of reasons so I am dedicating most of today’s show to help you master the skill of taking tiny seeds and turning them into food and medicine producing plants.
The reality is starting seeds can be frustrating if you don’t do it correctly but it doesn’t have to be difficult as long as you follow the blueprint Mother Nature has laid out for us. Once you do that starting your own makes producing your own food extremely cost effective.
Join me today as we discuss…

Understanding how seeds germinate in the wild (this answers so many questions)
What are the needs of a seed
Cubes, pots, paper and peat
Why starting indoors is a good idea
Light and not all light is equal
The role of the greenhouse and getting by without one (sort of)
Building a simple grow light
Mist watering and watering from the bottom
Creating constant temperatures
Culling and “pricking out”
Starting seeds in pots that are generally considered “direct sow”
Seeds that should almost always be direct sowed
Hardening off seeds
Potting up the why and how
Holding back in ground planting until you are sure
Mulch is your friend

Steve Solomon founder of SoilAndHealth.org
Steve Solomon writes books on food gardening. He officially “retired” at the age of 44 after selling the mail order seed business he built up with great success in the 1980s. Today he makes his home in Australia where he grows the majority of the food they consume.
Steve considers himself a political libertarian and sees his role in life to be “encouraging others food self sufficiency and better health. He describes his methods and books as “beyond organic” or even as “outside organic”.
Today he joins us to discuss why the quality of our food has been in decline for centuries. The importance of mineral amendments in not just growing a lot of food or good looking food but growing highly nutritious food. Why you should definitely do a soil test on the land you are growing on even if you are getting good or even great production and more.
Steve will even explain why although organic food may be free of many toxins it is often no more nutritionally valuable then conventionaly grown produce. He will even challenge the definition of “heirloom seeds” in a quite convincing manner.

It is Monday so time for another show based 100% on emails the audicence has sent in to jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com Remember to submit content for a show like this.

Today we are going to do something completely different and look at the old Billy Joel hit from 1982, “Allentown”. My hope is after you hear today’s show you will fully understand what I mean when I say, “history, prophecy or both” in regard to the song.
Join me today as we discuss…

What “closing the factories down” was actually like
Why unemployment was a national problem but worse in the coal and steel regions
What the song means when talks about “weekends at the Jersey shore”
The “restlessness” that was handed down
“Graduations hang on the wall” today they are college degrees vs. high school diplomas
The multiple broken promises that generation experienced
What “filling out forms, standing in lines” means to us today
What “hard to stay” is really all about
The true nature of the WWII generation post war prosperity
How “one word plastics” from the movie “The Graduate” relates to this song
What “the threw and American flag in our face” was all about
How the “flag in the face” relates to today
How this song is really about one of the massive shifts in the world
How this generation got caught in this shift
Some of the other massive shifts on the past 200 years
The real nature of the current shift

Lyrics of the Song Allentown
Well we’re living here in Allentown
And they’re closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they’re killing time
Filling out forms, standing in line
Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers at the USO
Asked them to dance, danced with them slow
And we’re living here in Allentown
But the restlessness was handed down
And it’s getting very hard to stay
Well we’re waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard, if we behaved
So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coke, chromium steel
And we’re waiting here in Allentown
But they’ve taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away
Every child had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got
Something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our face
Well, I’m living here in Allentown
And it’s hard to keep a good man down
But I won’t be getting up today
And it’s getting very hard to stay
And we’re living here in Allentown

I am really excited to welcome Greg Yows to The Survival Podcast. Greg is a great friend to both the show and me personally. Together we wrote “The Revolution is You” our show theme.
When asked about himself Greg says,
“I am a simple songwriter. The hippies in the 60s had their “protest” bards in the form of Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Janice Joplin, John Lennon, Joan Baez…the list goes on. Now, I ain’t claimin’ to have their skill. But I have just as much passion for my cause. And that cause is making sure my kids enjoy freedom from the tyrannical, over-taxing, nanny-state governments that are currently plaguing our nation.
I hail from the piney-woods of East Texas where the fishing is amazing but the county was dry. So here I am in Austin, a computer programmer by day and musician at night…cranking out patriot songs between honey-dos, working on my preps, gardening, fishing and taking care of my two kids.”
Join Greg and I today was we discuss his music at Revolution Rock and Roll, some of the other things he is currently working on, the role of our military, life as a prepper and more.

All eyes seem to focus on one number, the US National Debt owed by the federal government. The number is alarming no doubt as of this episode it is currently 15.2 trillion dollars. That’s 134,000 per tax payer. The bigger issue though is that our states collectively owe over 2.8 trillion just in municipal bonds (based on late 2011 estimates).
Debt is one thing but “unfunded obligations” are even worse. Join me today to fully understand the stark reality of our economic future and why you need to be preparing right now to be a self sufficient as possible going forward.
Join me today as we discuss…

How the middle class is the back bone of a nation’s economy
30 Signs the middle class is dying
How the nation, states, cities and people are really corporations
When push comes to shove at the state/city level what will be cut
Why balance the books can’t fix the economic problems at this point
A look at a few states doing “good” and doing “not so good”
Why even those “doing good” are on the way to major pain
Why preparedness is the only viable solution at this point

It is Monday so time for another show based 100% on emails the audicence has sent in to jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com Remember to submit content for a show like this.
Tune in today as I respond to your emails on…

Get the Book The Eagle Has Crashed
Ted Lacksonen is a writer and commentator known in the blogosphere as The Country Thinker. He has previously practiced as an attorney for a major international law firm, and worked as a structural designer in the shipbuilding industry. Ted lives in the rolling hills of his home state of Ohio with his wife and son.
Ted joins us today to discuss his recently released novel The Eagle Has Crashed, which is a near-future novel that is set in 2029-30. It is the story of the day that America’s national debt leads to an economic meltdown.
The Eagle has Crashed documents the lives of several ordinary Ohioans as the nation falls apart around them. As the situation worsens it brings out the best – and worst – in Ohioans and Americans across the land.

In the past I have always redone the intro to this show. this year do to a pretty bad case of laryngitis I am simply re-posting last years version.
Most of today’s show is a rebroadcast of 2008′s Christmas special. Today we pause and take a moment to reflect on Christmas and how it has become the Holiday we celebrate today. Many American’s have no idea just how Christmas became unique here in America, the role it played in bringing our nation together after two wars of independence and the civil war.
Christmas is special and a time to pause and reflect. Christmas is indeed a special time of year, today I will cover many aspects of it that may make this Christmas just a bit more special. There is also a full text transcription on of the non commercial portion of today’s show in the show notes below.
Tune in today to hear about…

Christmas was banned in England at one time and even parts of America
Early Americans didn’t really celebrate Christmas, (congress was in session on Dec 25th, 1789)
In the early 1800s Christmas was a rowdy holiday spurred by class conflict, turmoil and unemployment
In 1819, best-selling author Washington Irving wrote The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon bringing us many “ancient customs”, he simply invented
Leading up to the Civil War, Christmas was a “southern holiday” and Thanksgiving a “northern holiday”
How Christmas and Thanksgiving together helped to heal a young America
Today is a time to pause, reflect and just be, prepping, planning and stress will all wait patiently for you
Different ending music for today’s show! The most beautiful version of Oh Holly Night I have ever heard, just pause, listen and realize what really matters while it plays.

If you asked me to sum up my view of prepping in some plucky marketing way, I would say it comes down to Three P’s

Passion
Persistence
Planning

Unfortunately many people in the prepper world have a fourth P that over rides their entire life, paranoia. I have been told that you are not paranoid if the thing you fear is a legitimate threat. I don’t fully agree, I mean being hit by a car is a legitimate threat but living in fear of roads or seeing every car as “trying to run you over” is indeed living in a paranoid state. Sure the danger exists but the disconnect is between the danger’s true reality and the perceived danger in the individuals mind.
Join Me Today As I Discuss…

What exactly is a healthy fear vs. a paranoid state
A perfect example of paranoia the NDAA as reported vs. as written
My solutions to Paranoia

Planning

Your lifestyle
Your future
Your property
Your redundancy

Passion

For Life
For Liberty
For Your Family
For Your “Work”
For The Future

Persistence

Failure is only a lesson
Nothing worth much is easy
Preparedness is a lifestyle not something you “do”
How you think is more important than what you know
What you know is more important than what you have
What you have is more important than what you don’t have
Everything is interconnected

I Don't Have a Crystal Ball, But Let's Look at the Future Anyway
I will be the first to tell you my “predictions” if you wish to call them such are far more long term then a year in most instances. I do figure though that now is a good time to talk about the coming year of 2012 and what we can and should expect to see happening over the next year.
My hope today is not really to do a modern Nostradamus impersonation, it is more to help you look into the coming year with both caution and optimism.
2012 has a lot of nonsense attached to it as “the end of the world” and while most people don’t believe that, it has had an effect. Many people have been open to their vulnerabilities by the hype around 2012 for the last few years. Many in the preparedness space are poised to capitalize on this manufactured paranoia.
My hope is today’s show will put some perspective into this nonsense and lead you to the logical conclusion, no one really knows what is going to happen but working for a better future is the best course of action.
Join Me Today as we Discuss…

“The most important election in history” – meh not really
Another almost government shut down a month before the election
Gingrich looses in Iowa and begins a terminal spiral
Iran becomes the “most dangerous threat” on the news and in debates
More US Cities and Municipalities go into receivership (bankruptcy)
Downward class migration continues but the message is “the economy is improving”
Unemployment will drop, people will still have less money
Urban farming will continue to grow
More big money pours into agricultural and timber land
Big Ag companies will change their marketing (environmentally friendly)
The world will not end – I promise!

We are now beginning the final week of shows for 2011, as a reminder we are going to be “closed” from Dec. 23rd to January 2nd. During this time I WILL be providing tech support but not putting out new shows.
With this in mind I wanted to do a show today that would help you as you ponder the new year during what ever down time you might have. It saddens me how much liberty we have lost, but what saddens me even more is the defeatism of those that are in their own words, “fighting for liberty”. The reality is there are some things we can not change at the current time, our fellow citizens are not ready to do so. Until then we must live in liberty in our own lives.
Join me today as I discuss…

What I got wrong about the NDAA and why it doesn’t matter
Why I believe that now is the time for personal action not political action
The 14 things I think you must do to have personal liberty

Believe and do as you please (with in the law)
Spread your belief example, never with force
Create independence from the systems
Solve your own problems when ever you can
Vote for what you believe in, not who you think can win
Know why you believe what you believe
Accept challenges to what you believe but require facts
Never submit to government authority voluntarily (legally resist)
Create your own systems, your own networks, etc.
Value education and be a self directed learner at all times
Let no man speak for you or put words in your mouth
Accept that others many ignore, demean or attack you
Argue ideas, do not ague the validity of the individual
Remember no matter what anyone says, what you do matters

AlertsUSA.com Keeps You Informed About Threats via Your Mobile Device
Today I am joined on The Survival Podcast by Steve Aukstakalnis. Steve is the founder of AlertsUSA, a Miami based risk management firm providing one of the nation’s most widely used terrorism and national security threat alert services for mobile devices. He started the firm in late 2001 out of a two bedroom apartment following the attacks of 9/11.
The company now serves a client base that extends to more than 20 countries, from government agencies all the way down to business travelers and the average guy or gal on the street that wants to keep up on breaking events.
His information sources and contacts provide a unique perspective on national and international events and the potential impact here at home. He is with us today to talk about storm clouds building on a number of fronts.

The Forest is the Teacher, Not the End Goal - Photo Credit to Axel-D via Flickr
I keep quite a few things set up on Google New Alerts. That is where you run a search for a term on Google News and ask them to send you an email when ever a given word or phrase pops up in the news. So as you might imagine I do this for terms like “pandemic”, “economic collapse”, “natural disaster” and many others related to the preparedness industry.
I also have terms set up that are more on subjects connected to basic self sufficiency and homesteading. As you might imagine I include the term “permacuture”. The other day that alert sent me a link to an article called, “Traditional Farming in the Rain Forest”, it led to an article that was a scathing retort on permaculture calling it basically useless.
The author gets almost every single part wrong. It wasn’t that we disagree mind you it was that his claims and assertions were simply 100% inaccurate. Despite this it has helped me to better understand many of the objections I hear about permaculture. Today I plan to discuss them and try to answer some of these objections, hopefully with a now better understanding of what the objection is really all about.
Join me today as I discuss…

1 Prime Directive + 3 Ethics = Permaculture
Common Objections to Permaculture (none of which are based on reality)

The Rain Forest can’t feed as many people per acre as a farm
If we don’t do anything and let nature take its course we will starve
We need annual crops too not just perennials
Permaculture only produces weird things no one eats
Permaculture is limited to forest gardening
All permaculture amounts to is good organic gardening
Permaculture is all about growing food and plants
We can’t have productivity with out fertilizer and irrigation
We have to till soil to plant modern crop
