Etekcity 4 Pack of LED Lanterns – Item of the Day

eteklanternsEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.  These things are an incredible value and are the result of a lot of research.   I have previously reviewed The Streamlight Siege Lantern.  And I still think it is the highest quality LED lantern on the market.

It is also 26-114 dollars based on the options you pick.  Even at the lowest priced option if you wanted one for every room of a 8 room house, you are looking at 200 bucks.  Frankly for this type of thing, it is over kill.  I wanted an affordable solution for every room lighting during an extended blackout.

I started looking around and dozens of companies are marketing these little pop up lanterns with minor differences.  The housings are almost identical.  Some are very inexpensive and some cost almost as much as The Siege, none are as good though.

Well I love Etekcity which has a lot of really cool stuff much of which I have reviewed in the past like their Thermal Gun, Power Failure Lights and Remote Control Electrical Outlets.  So I checked and they have this four pack for only $22.99 with free shipping.  This pack is an Amazon best seller with over a 4000 reviews and an average of 5 stars.

But I always check the one star reviews before picking an item.  Many times you can tell said reviews are written by idiots.  In this case, however; they bothered me.  Almost all of them say they got one that didn’t work out of the box and then never worked again.  So I began checking other options, heck it is almost like ever single brand of these things are clones.   They all have great reviews, a few bad reviews and all the different ones have almost the exact same complaint, dead on arrival or after one use.

So I contacted Etekcity who has great service and said basically that it is understandable at this price point and selling so many a few will have problems, but what is your return/replacement policy and this is what I got back in return, within an hour by the way!

Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out to us and thank you for all the feedback we appreciate it. Honestly we sell hundreds if not a thousand of these lanterns a day and we do have problems with them, they are not perfect.

Typically the main issue is a little toggle switch in the base that likely during shipping breaks unfortunately and once in awhile the top of the lantern is cracked or loose again probably due to shipping.

Once the lantern makes it to the customer and they arrive in good order we never hear from the customer because they seem to not fail with normal use.

We usually only hear from the customers the moment they open the package and find the damage and then we immediately send out a replacement and then all lanterns come with a 1 year warranty.

These are not the worlds greatest lantern but for around $6 each, they are one of amazons best sellers and we think for the price they are the best around.

thank you

Okay so every single one of those one star reviews are people that simply could  have gotten a free replacement, on a $5.75 product?  Honestly this is why I have recommended so many things from Etekcity.

Talk about honesty in a nut shell they said, “hey look when you sell this many products of this type some will have problems, but we stand by and replace them”, what more could you ask for for about 6 bucks?

With that I was sold, I got two sets, we have them in our black out kits and if one fails, I don’t care I have 8!  That said all of mine have worked just fine and were in perfect shape when they got here.  But this was important to me, I wanted to be sure that if you did have a problem, Etekcity would fix it and I wanted to give you a lot cost option for back up lighting.  And hey even at this stupid cheap price, batteries are included!  Please consider that even cheap ass Rayovac Batteries are about 8 bucks for a 12-Pack.

And these do that, they will give you 12 full hours of light off three measly AA batteries.  So to me at the cost and for what they do this is the best deal in back up LED lighting for your house and your BOK (Black Out Kit).    So I really recommend you pick up at least one Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns if you don’t have that base covered already.  They seem like a cool gift idea as well.

P.S. – I have noticed a few negative reviews complaining of leaking batteries ruining these lanterns.  Here is my rule for batteries, never store them in your devices for long periods of time.  I don’t care if the device is expensive or cheap, I don’t care of the batteries are generic or top brand, just don’t do it.

We keep flashlights (mostly D-Cell Maglites) around the house, we use them all the time.  Used devices never seem to have this problem.  When they start to weaken we replace them.

In our BOK we keep our devices and with them a ziplock bag with 4 sets of batteries per device in the bag.  We use our power failure lights and flashlights to retrieve our BOK and simply put the batteries in at that point and time.

Note that it is true that battery manufacturers are required by law to replace any device that leaking batteries destroy.  That doesn’t help in the middle of a black out though does it?  Simply put any device that is not used often, take the batteries out of it, store them with it and save yourself the headache.

P.S.S. – Since I first reviewed this item in 2016 we have sold hundreds of them, given they are four packs that is thousands of individual lanterns.  Total complaints I have received in that time is zero.  I still have 8 of these as does my son, they all work and never seem to run out of battery life.  They do now have a new model with a “dimmer switch” which should extend battery life even further.

This set is 28.99 a four pack and has the same warranty.  I don’t have any experience with it and I do have to say two things.  Given the company and all their other products it should be great.  That said when you add something to an electronics board, it isn’t really an add, it is a complete “respin” in other words a new product.  So you can’t expect that it will be just as good or better, it might be but it is in the end a new product.

Gerber Dime Multi-Tool – TSP Item of the Day

dimeEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Gerber Dime Multi- Tool.  To me everyone should have a mini multi-tool on their key chain.

This is one of my absolute favorites due to how small and useful it is. There are so many times in our lives we could use a screw driver or a pair of pliers or even a good pair of tweezers.  I spent a lot of time checking into small key chain sized multi tools and the Gerber Dime was the one I settled on.

With this little gadget on my key chain I have the following tools everywhere I go, all the time.

  • Needle nose pliers
  • Wire cutter
  • Fine edge blade
  • Retail package opener
  • Scissors
  • Flat Screw Driver
  • Crosshead Screw Driver
  • Bottle opener
  • Tweezers
  • File

For many years I carried a Leatherman Wave, in fact I often still do.  Frankly I think it is the best full sized multi-tool out there.   But it is a rather large item on your belt and just not practical for every day and all the time.  To much EDC makes one look like a pathetic version of Batman you know.

So at times I would need pliers, a driver, etc, and just not have it with me.  Well pretty much anywhere I go I have my keys.  To drive home how small this item is when folded here is mine on my key chain below.  As you can see it takes up less space than the key to my 4-Runner.

gerberdime

The Gerber Dime Multi- Tool is also a great deal at under 14 bucks with free shipping on Prime.  It absolutely will not do everything a full sized tool does but it is small enough to always be there when you need it.  To me that is the key with mini multi-tools, better a small set of pliers then none at all!

Zymox Pet Spray with Hydrocortisone – TSP Item of the Day

zymoxEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Zymox Pet Spray with Hydrocortisone.  As  you may remember my buddy Charlie the Pitbull-Pointer had some issues with his back paws.  We are pretty sure that evil fire ants started the issue and caused him to chew both his paws pretty raw.

Well as I reported in another review we used a combination of comfrey ointment and bitter apple spray to deal with it.  It healed very well over all, but one spot high up on his back paw seemed fine one day then was bloody red the next.

Time to up the game.  So I applied Zymox Pet Spray with Hydrocortisone and in a single day the improvement was marked.  It must taste like crap so over spraying with bitter apple has not been necessary.  After 3 days on it the sore was basically just a spot with hair missing, hair which rapidly grew back.

Comfrey was able to do the job here but a dog is not a person and sometimes a pup can’t resist the urge to chew, even though bitter apple spray.  Then it is time for something with Hydrocortisone in it.  This spray also has a three enzyme blend of lactoperoxidose, lysozyme and lactoferrin that effectively destroys bacterial, viral and fungal microorganisms. These enzymes are derived from natural milk protein peroxidases according to the manufacturer.

If you check the reviews on Amazon you will find many dog and cat owners consider this stuff a God send.  That is why it sits with 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 800 reviews.  So this is another item that belongs in your “Dogie First Aid Kit” (aka DFAK) because it works so well.

The key with hot spots and the like is get them treated before they become chronic and spread.  I like to rely on herbals but as soon as he made the sore bloody it was either this or the “cone of shame” and I just didn’t want my buddy in the cone.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – This is not medical advice just personal experience.  Since starting using this we have several times used it for ourselves.  Last fall I got a small mark on my hand and assumed it was a scratch from some hardware cloth, it was to small poke marks, yea it ended up being a spider bite, what type I don’t know.

While it wasn’t something dangerous it started getting worse and worse, with some necrosis spreading, comfrey was no help, this stopped it cold.  Another time I got tore up moving some wood by fire ants, I sprayed the areas of my hands with this before the bites broke out, and they never did.  Again this IS NOT advice just a personal experience.

I would however like Doc. Bones opinion on this stuff.  Bones?

The Gerber EAB Lite – TSP Item of the Day

gerber

The Gerber EAB Lite is a Huge Bang for Your Buck as an EDC Tool.

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Gerber EAB Lite Pocket Knife.  This little guy is one of my absolute favorite little pieces of EDC.

You may wonder why a guy that carries knives that cost 200-700 dollars would turn around and carry this little 6 dollar tool.  Simple I have no desire to dull and gum up my expensive knives on things like opening boxes with my good knives.  And it is one thing to get tape goo all over your 300 dollar custom it is another to dull it to the extreme cutting up boxes into pieces.

What the Gerber EAB Lite does is ensure you always have a razor sharp blade available because, well, you use razor blades in it.  Now think about this you can get a hundred pack of blades for 11 bucks.  Each blade can be used till dull, then flipped and you use up the other side.  That means with one 100 pack of blades you can flip or change a blade each week and will will have a brand new blade in your knife for almost 4 years!

Long term listeners of TSP know I have recommended this product for almost as long as there has been a TSP.  This little tool sells for about 6 bucks and ships free on Amazon Prime to boot.  I give these away to friends and family all the time.  It is a great way to share prepping in a very soft way.  People see it and are like wow what is that, or you are always prepared.  I just hand it to them, show them how the blade is changed and say, “if you promise to carry it you can have it”.

Important – One little safety tip.  Like most houses we have a “junk drawer” in our kitchen, right near the garbage.  I keep my extra blades and a small screwdriver in that drawer with and old vitamin bottle.

When I change my blade, I drop the old blade into the bottle and cap it.  This way no one will bet hurt handling the garbage.  I would feel awful if Charlie got hurt in one of his weak garbage eating moments.  It also protects us when we take out the trash and hey garbage men are people too right!  Just understand when your blade is “dull” likely parts of it are still sharp and can be dangerous.  Always and I mean always do something to prevent injuries from old blades when discarding them.

Anyway if you don’t already have one give the Gerber EAB Lite a try, for the price you can’t beat it.  And consider picking up a few to give away and perhaps one for each glove box in your vehicles.  I have even used this to skin squirrels and rabbits, with the way I do it, it is all you need.

Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser.  I got a lot of questions about a diffuser for essential oils after one of my podcasts on getting started with herbalism.  Essential oils are one of my favorite way to use herbs, to understand why let me explain what a REAL essential oil is.

You know when you walk but a hedge of roses when the sun is hitting them and you get that amazing smell, when that happens you are experiencing essential oils in nature.  An oil is “essential” in the sense that it contains the “essence of” the plant’s fragrance—the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived.

Essential oils are made by distillation and it takes a lot of an herb to produce a small amount of oil. For instance to make a pound of lavender essential oil you will need about 200 pounds of lavender flowers to do so.  And lavender is pretty heavy as many herbs go, for instance if you want a pound of rose oil it will take 2000-5000 pound of roses to do the job depending on the rose type.

Want a pound of oregano essential oil, well you’ll need about 1,000 pounds of oregano to get the job done.  Bringing it down a bit smaller, if you want say one ounce of peppermint oil you will need only about 5 lbs of peppermint.  Or if you want just an ounce of that oregano oil you will still need about 60-65 pounds of fresh oregano.

This is why essential oils can seem expensive, and this is why when you see an essential oil and it is cheap, it likely isn’t pure essential oil and you should not buy it.

So why a diffuser, what does that do for you?  Sure it makes the house smell nice but are there any other real benefits.  Okay before I continue, to protect myself from the almighty dot gov, I have to say, I am not a doctor, nothing that follows is intended to cure, prevent or treat disease, it is only my opinion.  Ya gotta love our freedom in this nation don’t ya?

So here it goes, I feel that one of the first things a diffuser can do is promote more restful sleep.  This is critical to health in my opinion for obvious reasons.  Diffusers have also been shown to improve respiratory health and when used with some herbs boot natural immune responses.    I personally find they improve my mental focus and clarity especially when I am distracted.

Additionally many essential oils are antivirals, antibiotics, antiseptics, etc.  so they help kill germs and bacteria.  Finally they are just beneficial to your overall emotional health in my opinion.  In fact I think a lot of people on dangerous medications would be better off using essential oils and a bit of daily relaxing and meditation, or at least give that a try before committing to a life time of using a drug with more side effects than benefits according to the people that make it.

Now why the Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser .  I mean there are literally thousands of models why this one.  First check the reviews, frankly I am getting depressed with how many effing fake ass reviews are on Amazon, especially with any electronic product, but not this one.  5500 reviews, 4.5 stars over all and an A Grade on Fakespot.com.

Next looks, I mean this thing just looks nice.  It doesn’t look like some weird space age thing or some funky medical device, it is well suited to be in any home and match any rooms look and feel.  The lights are nice and make it look cool as well, but that doesn’t personally do much for me.  I do love that it has a built in timer and that it is very easy to set, in fact all the controls are very intuitive.

Lastly it just works, again as always I am out for a solid value to price ratio.  This one has it.  So check out the Easehold Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser today, it really will make you feel better in my view and guys, damn cool gift if I do say so myself.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – I know there will be a ton of “what oils should I get”.  I really tend to buy a specific oil for a specific reason.  I use oregano because it is such a great anti viral, I use peppermint because it makes you mentally clear and frankly I just like it, etc.  But there is no harm in experimenting.  So as you learn about an herb, just get some good oil of it and try it out.  However as a great starter set this one is really good, It comes with 16 Essential Oils.

You will get 18 oils to try including, lavender, tea tree, peppermint, lemongrass, sweet orange, eucalyptus, pine, tangerine, rosemary, frankincense, lime, lemon, bergamot, patchouli, grapefruit and cinnamon.  The cost on this set is only 36 bucks and added to the diffuser it really does make an awesome gift I think anyone would appreciate.

King Kooker 12-Slot Leg and Wing Grill Rack – Item of the Day

wingrackEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the King Kooker 12-Slot Leg and Wing Grill Rack.  Oh you out door cooking types are going to love this, though it works quite well in the oven too!  Since I first reviewed this item the price has gone up to 16 bucks but the good news is it is no longer an “add on item” so you can buy one alone if you want to.

There is so much I love about these things, first they hold either 12 wings or 12 legs and they do it in about 1/4th of the space that you’d normally need.  Next is that they end up with perfectly crisped and seasoned skin.  Since they never touch the grill rack and you never have to turn them.

I generally cook my chicken on a low temperature on indirect or very low direct heat until almost done.  Then bring up the temp at the end to crisp up the skin.  It also makes sense to set these in a small pan or toss away aluminum pan to minimize flare ups when cooking over direct coals or flame.

Again they work great in the oven as well, cook until almost done at say 350 then pop up to 425 for a bit to crisp up the skin, want a recipe, tune into today’s show for one!  You cans see in the above photo how the wings are hung from the rack by the tips and in the photo below how the legs hang and are held by the knuckle.

Let me tell you try the King Kooker 12-Slot Leg and Wing Grill Rack and you will never loose that crispy skin off a drum stick ever again.

legrack

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – Here is a cook I did with these was indoors and let me give you the skinny.  I coated the wings in my famous “chili garlic pepper oil” and then dusted them with a mix of chili powder, smoked salt, garlic, cumin, paprika, onion and black pepper, all about equal amounts ground in a Mr. Coffee Grinder. (FYI this is my everything seasoning mix)

I used the “convection roast” setting in my oven, ran them at 425 for 45 minutes, they were beyond fantastic.

To do this without creating a grease fire or lots of smoke take a large aluminum foil ban like for baking a turkey, put this rack inside it and put about 3 inches of water in it.  This will catch dripping fat and the water won’t let it scorch on the pan when it gets caught.  The extra humidity will be good for keeping them juicy.

On this latest run I got 15 wings on the rack with a bit of fiddling, which is 30 pieces.  The only down side is you can only fit one of these in a standard oven.

P.S.S. – We also featured this item on Episode Three of Biltong For Breakfast – Jerk Bird Salad.  I did some wings on the grill using it that were rubbed with Walkerswood Jerk Seasoning.   These are my new favorite wings though I recommend the mild version of Walkerswood for them.

Flackers Flax Crackers – Item of the day

flackEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is something I am very excited about.  It is Flackers Flax Crackers.  A couple years ago I let my paleo diet go for a bit, got to lax and put a lot of weight back on.  No where near all of it but too much.  Along the way I have gone back to Protein Power as the core of my Paleo Diet.

Thanks to all that I am once again in pretty good shape.  One thing I always hated giving up was a crunchy cracker.  With Flackers I have found my low carb crunchy muse.  You will notice in my link, I go to an exact match search for flackers, with a setting to pull up free shipping options.

These are being sold by a few vendors, pricing for volume is all over the map, so I leave it to you to pick and choose what works best for you.  Many are “add on items” meaning your total order has to be over 25 bucks but then shipping is free, so combine them with another item if you just want to try a bag or three.

I am going to suggest though that your first purchase be a just two or three packs, because not everyone will like them.  I LOVE them.  We got Rosemary and Savory to try them out.  Dorothy hated the Rosemary (funny because she like the herb) and said she could, “get used to the Savory ones”.  She is not in love with the texture though.

Me I am happy as a pig with a bowl of corn soaked in beer!  I did some of these with sardines, very nice.  I also did some up with yogurt cheese (mixed with cracked pepper, garlic and jalapeno) topped wtih some good quality sliced ham.  To quote Emeril Lagasse BAM!

Here are the stats, a serving has the following…

  • Carbs 8 grams
  • Fiber 7 grams
  • Net Carbs 1 (yes, fing one, woo hoo)
  • Protein 5 grams
  • Fat 8 grams (but zero Saturated or Trans fats and about 5 Grams of it is Omega 3s, most of the rest is ALA which many take as a supplement)
  • Calories 110 (but unless you get stupid you don’t count calories on low carb)
  • Seven grams of fiber

Okay so you have a crunchy snack, with one net carb a serving, a good amount of protein, loaded with Omega 3s, ALA and fiber.  This can’t get better can it?  Oh yea, these things are sprouted and raw.  If you read the write up on the makers website, they are soaked until just sprouted, then seasoned, pressed and dried to a crisp.  Yes sprouted!

Again my only caution is you may not like them, or you might, a whole lot.  But if you are low carb give Flackers a try and see if they work for you.  Frankly this is a super food, something you can eat a bit of every day and never feel bad about it, ever.   Below is a short video to give you an idea of what they look like.

Otium Bluetooth FM Transmitter – Item of the Day

bluetoothEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Otium Bluetooth FM Transmitter.  I was turned onto this product by a listener and knew at once I needed one for my old F350.  About 2.5 years ago we got our Toyota 4Runner.  It was the first tech heavy vehicle I have ever owned.

I really love being able to play my iphone music and podcasts in it, to make phone calls hands free and hear them over the speakers, etc.  I have been trying to talk myself into getting a new stereo for my truck with features like that.

I just can’t justify it!  My old beast is a long ago paid for 2005 F350.  Not only is it an 05 but it was even when new a bare bones work truck.  I paid cash for it in 2011 and it has been a good partner.  I just don’t drive it that much any more, so I wanted the cool features and access to my music but couldn’t justify the expense.

I did have a FM Modulator in it for a while that allowed me to play music but it wasn’t really that good of a sound quality.  What I had been doing is taking my Bose Speaker with me, but I don’t really like having a 300 dollar speaker sitting in my truck when I am in the store or what have you.

Coming in at only 20 bucks, when I first reviewed it, I almost wrote this thing off but the guy that wrote in about it was raving about it so I gave it a shot.  Man this thing is slick.  First you pick an open unused frequency on the FM dial and set it to that.  You pair your phone to it and that is that.  And today it is an even better deal as the price has dropped to only 16 bucks!

You can now make calls, listen to music or podcasts, etc.  One really great thing is it also has a USB port so you can charge your phone and you don’t loose the outlet for that purpose.  It also takes an SD card if you want to put music or audio files on it that way.

Another great feature is that it has an aux port, so you can directly connect a non bluetooth device or not use bluetooth on your phone to conserve battery life, or simply because you don’t want to use it for any reason.

Most newer vehicles now come with these features built in but if you have an older vehicle this little gadget will give it a hell of an upgrade for only 18 bucks.  So check out the Otium Bluetooth FM Transmitter if you have an outdated sound system.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop online you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – My only word of caution is make sure you have some “empty space” on your FM dial based on where you live.  Here in Dallas I have 107.7 and one other frequency that are actually empty with minimal bleed over.  I have put presets for these two stations on my radio so I can swap if one starts picking up too much static or bleed.  I live in a huge market and the dial is really crowded, in many areas the dial is full of empty channels.  If anyone knows of a comparable product that uses AM bands, please let me know, TONS of empty space there!

Marine Metal Aeratr Bubble Box – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Marine Metal Aeratr Bubble Box.  Yes this is another item for your fishing kit, but it is more than that, a lot more.  In the end what this is comes down to a battery powered aerator that runs about 40 hours on 2 D-Cell Batteries.  Again 40 hours!

So sure I keep one in my Fishing Kit, because it can keep bait alive or fish that I want to bring home alive in a bucket.  That is what most people use this for.  Yet there are other things one may need this for.

Let me ask you, do you keep fish at all?  Like do you have an aquarium?  Or an aquaponics system?  Now I am not suggesting that this little box can keep your 55 gallon tank or 300 gallon IBC running like a top long term, but what if you power goes out for a day or two?

Like many of you I have a generator but you can only run so many things and like many of you I am all about running what you can on batteries when it makes sense.  So consider with a 12 pack of cheap D-Cell batteries and two of these boxes you could keep two tanks aerated for 120 strait hours.  Folks that is 5 days!

Again long term this is not a solution for larger tanks but during an outage this could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in lost fish!  And what does this little magic box set you back, a whopping 8 bucks.

Oh and hey what about you high gravity beer and mead brewers?  Those of you wanting to push things to 16-20% ABV, one key to that is oxygen, so you hook this little bad boy up to your carboy, (sanitize the hose and stone of course) and run it for 6 hours before setting your airlock into place!  Note if you plan to do this you should get one dedicated ONLY to this use.

Again my main use for this is keeping fish alive in the field, mostly for bait and it is outstanding for that, but for 8 bucks it does a lot of other things.  So consider adding the Marine Metal Aeratr Bubble Box to your kit today.

Hydro Organics Cal-n-Mag Plant Food – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Hydro Organics Cal-n-Mag Plant Food.  This review rounds out my 6 items for my fertility program for my vegetable growing.  It addresses the most common mineral deficiencies in plants, which is calcium and magnesium.

When it comes to Calcium and Magnesium.  These two are often deficient and you really need both in order for the plants to absorb them and use them well.  Calcium deficiency is usually caused due to low calcium availability or due to water stress which results in low transpiration rates. The symptoms of calcium deficiency include curling of young leaves or shoots scorching or spotting on young leaves, poor growth, leaf tip burns, stunted roots, and damage to fruit.

Magnesium deficiency, like any deficiency, leads to reduction in yield. It also leads to higher susceptibility to plant disease.  Since magnesium is mobile within the plant, deficiency symptoms appear on lower and older leaves first.  The first symptom is pale leaves, which then develop an interveinal chlorosis, which is yellowing of the leaves between the veins with the veins remaining green. In some plants, reddish or purple spots will appear on the leaves.

The expression of symptoms is greatly dependent on the intensity to which leaves are exposed to light. Deficient plants that are exposed to high light intensities will show more symptoms.   Any of that sound familiar to you?  Now as plants need calcium and magnesium together to effectively utilize both, most supplements come as a combination.

The best product I have found for this need is, Hydro Organics Earth Juice Cal-n-Mag Plant Food.  Again this is a liquid form, and that makes it available instantly.  We are also going to use it first as a drench and then in follow up treatments as a foliar feed.  You can even just mix it with Garrett juice and do it all at one time, how simple and easy is that?

Now for a bit of a note, one reason many people have Cal-Mag deficiency is due to very alkaline soils.  Now using a product like this helps a lot, because the plant can access it immediately but a bit of acidity with it is helpful.  The good news is if you are using it with Garrett Juice you already have some Apple Cider Vinegar in it, so you have a naturally slightly acidic plant feed.  If for any reason you are using it without Garrett Juice just add about 1 tsp of ACV per gallon, I use a half gallon hand sprayer so I would use a half a tsp (note teaspoon, not tablespoon).

This is also a great product for aquaponics systems, specifically ebb and flow beds.  Rather than dump it into your system, just mist ebb and flow beds if they show any signs of deficiency.

A reminder on any foliar feeding, do it when the sun is low.  That is either early morning or late evening.  I prefer late evening, because you know the sun won’t be back until morning.  Foliar feeding when the sun is high is at best a waste of your time and money and at worst can damage your plants and even burn them.  So stick again to either very early or in the evening as the sun is setting.

Again I want to point out the issues with alkaline soils can be a real problem.  You can dump all the egg shells and ground up shells you want into alkaline soil, and it may help but you will still likely see some cal/mag deficiency.   Just a small bit of a liquid, instantly bio available cal/mag supplement is a solution to a chronic problem many people never even identify.  Since they bury say and egg shell with every plant, they don’t even consider it.  Again if you have alkaline soils, it is going to be difficult for your plants to get enough calcium without some help and if you have a magnesium deficiency, you are sunk on calcium, as the plants need both minerals to effectively make use of either one.

So give Hydro Organics Cal-n-Mag Plant Food a shot, in fact start using my entire fertility program this year and I promise you will be amazed at the results.  At only 12 dollars a quart it is a great deal, I only use about 1/2 – 1 oz. to the gallon of this stuff, so a quart lasts a long time.

Generally I use about 1/2 ounce to the gallon at regular intervals (once plants have full leaves and about half way into the growing season, and when plants flower) and up it to one ounce if I see anything that appears to look like a deficiency.  So 12 bucks is buying you 16-32 gallons of feed for your plants.  By the way this stuff is also 3% nitrogen so it gives you a little boost of N as well.

Remember you can always find the TSP Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop online you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – I noticed this item was in low stock volume this morning so when I feature it, it may very well sell out.  It should come back in stock fast but here is an alternative I have also used that works very well.  Bloom City Cal-Mag Growing Supplement.  It contains a bit less Calcium and Magnesium then my preferred brand so it doesn’t quite make as much per quart but it is a solid second choice and it is what I would buy if I needed it now and could not get my preferred option.
