Etekcity 4 Pack of LED Lanterns – Item of the Day

eteklanternsEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns.  These things are an incredible value and are the result of a lot of research.   I have previously reviewed The Streamlight Siege Lantern.  And I still think it is the highest quality LED lantern on the market.

It is also 26-114 dollars based on the options you pick.  Even at the lowest priced option if you wanted one for every room of a 8 room house, you are looking at 200 bucks.  Frankly for this type of thing, it is over kill.  I wanted an affordable solution for every room lighting during an extended blackout.

I started looking around and dozens of companies are marketing these little pop up lanterns with minor differences.  The housings are almost identical.  Some are very inexpensive and some cost almost as much as The Siege, none are as good though.

Well I love Etekcity which has a lot of really cool stuff much of which I have reviewed in the past like their Thermal Gun, Power Failure Lights and Remote Control Electrical Outlets.  So I checked and they have this four pack for only $24.99 with free shipping.  This pack is an Amazon best seller with over a 4000 reviews and an average of 5 stars.

But I always check the one star reviews before picking an item.  Many times you can tell said reviews are written by idiots.  In this case, however; they bothered me.  Almost all of them say they got one that didn’t work out of the box and then never worked again.  So I began checking other options, heck it is almost like ever single brand of these things are clones.   They all have great reviews, a few bad reviews and all the different ones have almost the exact same complaint, dead on arrival or after one use.

So I contacted Etekcity who has great service and said basically that it is understandable at this price point and selling so many a few will have problems, but what is your return/replacement policy and this is what I got back in return, within an hour by the way!

Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out to us and thank you for all the feedback we appreciate it. Honestly we sell hundreds if not a thousand of these lanterns a day and we do have problems with them, they are not perfect.

Typically the main issue is a little toggle switch in the base that likely during shipping breaks unfortunately and once in awhile the top of the lantern is cracked or loose again probably due to shipping.

Once the lantern makes it to the customer and they arrive in good order we never hear from the customer because they seem to not fail with normal use.

We usually only hear from the customers the moment they open the package and find the damage and then we immediately send out a replacement and then all lanterns come with a 1 year warranty.

These are not the worlds greatest lantern but for around $6 each, they are one of amazons best sellers and we think for the price they are the best around.

thank you

Okay so every single one of those one star reviews are people that simply could  have gotten a free replacement, on a $6.25 product?  Honestly this is why I have recommended so many things from Etekcity.

Talk about honesty in a nut shell they said, “hey look when you sell this many products of this type some will have problems, but we stand by and replace them”, what more could you ask for for about 6 bucks?

With that I was sold, I got two sets, we have them in our black out kits and if one fails, I don’t care I have 8!  That said all of mine have worked just fine and were in perfect shape when they got here.  But this was important to me, I wanted to be sure that if you did have a problem, Etekcity would fix it and I wanted to give you a lot cost option for back up lighting.  And hey even at this stupid cheap price, batteries are included!  Please consider that even cheap ass Rayovac Batteries are about 8 bucks for a 12-Pack.

And these do that, they will give you 12 full hours of light off three measly AA batteries.  So to me at the cost and for what they do this is the best deal in back up LED lighting for your house and your BOK (Black Out Kit).    So I really recommend you pick up at least one Etekcity’s 4 Pack of LED Lanterns if you don’t have that base covered already.  They seem like a cool gift idea as well.

P.S. – I have noticed a few negative reviews complaining of leaking batteries ruining these lanterns.  Here is my rule for batteries, never store them in your devices for long periods of time.  I don’t care if the device is expensive or cheap, I don’t care of the batteries are generic or top brand, just don’t do it.

We keep flashlights (mostly D-Cell Maglites) around the house, we use them all the time.  Used devices never seem to have this problem.  When they start to weaken we replace them.

In our BOK we keep our devices and with them a ziplock bag with 4 sets of batteries per device in the bag.  We use our power failure lights and flashlights to retrieve our BOK and simply put the batteries in at that point and time.

Note that it is true that battery manufacturers are required by law to replace any device that leaking batteries destroy.  That doesn’t help in the middle of a black out though does it?  Simply put any device that is not used often, take the batteries out of it, store them with it and save yourself the headache.

Winchester 51 Piece Gunsmith Screwdriver Set – Item of the Day

smithkit

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day the Winchester 51 Piece Gunsmith Screwdriver Set.  Look strait out of the gate this is not really “the kit” for the big time gun enthusiast that tinkers often with many projects.  It won’t do everything  you will even need in drivers for guns, but it will do most, like 95%.

No what this kit is for is your range bag.  I can’t tell you how many times I have been at a range and a fellow shooter had some maintenance issue and no tools to fix the situation.  With this kit and a basic cleaning kit, a shell extractor and some lube if you can’t fix it at the range, you likely need a gun smith or to use your warranty if it is yet to expire.

driverkitbackThis is more than just a gun smith kit though.  Come on, 12 bucks for a good quality kit that has 48 different driver bits in it.  You know what I am going to say right.  Put one in the glove box of your vehicles.  Perhaps one in your Go Bag or BOB as well.

Does it have every torx bit, no but it has 7 and the one you are looking at pissed off because you expected it to be a Phillips bit likely will be one of those.  This is also a great gift to a young person who has finally be trusted to maintain his/her own firearms and frankly a good gift for anyone you need to get something for, not something spectacular just something.  You know what I mean.

Pick up one or a few of these and the first time you need it, you will feel like it just paid for itself.  Again this isn’t top quality on the level of say Forester or Grace USA (which I keep in my smithing box) but for 12 dollars it is extremely versatile and I have never had one fail me yet.  So give the Winchester 51 Piece Gunsmith Screwdriver Set a look and determine if it might be the right product for your range bag or other needs.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – I am bringing this one around because man talk about a great Christmas gift.  Gun owner or not this dang kit is perfect for anyone.  I again have one in my range bag, but also in my truck, my 4Runner, my BOB and my boat.

Bio-Groom Waterless Pet Shampoo – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day Bio-Groom Waterless Pet Shampoo and man do I love this stuff.  I have never been big on bathing dogs very often.  The canine is a species that seldom bathes in the wild yet remains fairly clean.  I always marveled at how amazing the pelt of a healthy fox or coyote was during my trapping days, who bathes them?

Yet domestic dogs do need bathing at times, mostly though good brushing with a simple hair brush and deshedding with something like the FURminator is all you need.  Still there are those times when the dog simply stinks.

Recently I do not know what Charlie got into but he stunk, not awful but not good either.  Specifically around his head and neck, he smelled like well, um, a combination of rotten nasty popcorn and Cheetos that sat in the garbage too long.   We know he didn’t actually get into the garbage, though it happens.  I don’t know what happened but I knew something had to be done.

There was also a cold snap coming on, now I don’t know if you have ever tried bathing a 100 pound Pit Bull Mix when the temps are sub 50 degrees with a garden hose.  Specifically one that doesn’t want to be bathed, but it isn’t fun!

Fortunately I had just started looking for a new waterless shampoo and had already ordered this, it was due in that day so Charlie and I were both spared the hose on a very cold day.  He spent a great deal of time outside until the UPS man came with his shampoo.

I started with a brief deshedding as he doesn’t need much.  I then sprayed him all over, sprayed my own hands and wiped it on around his head, ears, face and neck so I didn’t get it in his eyes.  He didn’t really like it but was agreeable with it, I then brushed him down and no more stink and a shinny happy dog.

Lucy and Max went next and both looked and smelled great after the procedure.  The great part?  Doing all three dogs took less than 15 minutes and no chasing anyone down and trying to subdue a 100 pit mix let alone a 150 pound German Shepherd under a hose spraying cold water on a cold day.

I now use Bio-Groom Waterless Pet Shampoo on our dogs about twice a month and they have grown to tolerate it.  Getting a biscuit as soon as they are done helps a lot, “I don’t like being sprayed but man I love those treats” thinking works with the canine brain.

Here is the procedure I recommend.  If your dog needs some deshedding or under coat removed do that first with something like the FURminator.  Then spray them all over, again I recommend using hands to apply near the face, neck, head etc.  Just spray on your hands and wipe it on them.  Then brush well. Done.

On brushing, while I love the FURminator for deshedding, most dog brushes are over priced junk.  I use a people brush for my dogs for general brushing and it cost a whopping $4.50.  Any brush of this style with open bristles will work just fine.

So if you want your bow wows shiny, clean and good smelling without the hassle, time and fight of a bath, give Bio-Groom Waterless Pet Shampoo a try today.  This is a product with almost 100 reviews, a 4.5 star rating and an A Grade on FakeSpot, so you know it is quality product.

UTG Ranger Field Bag – Item of the Day

utg bag

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the UTG Ranger Field Bag.  Long time followers of The Survival Podcast will know I have been recommending this bag for years.  And I will tell you this is the best value large bag I have found so far.

This is my go to as a luggage bag when I fly on airplanes.  It is so much more convenient than a roller as you make your way though what ever shuttle bus hell exists between you and your rental car.

It is huge as well, bigger than I think most people expect, in fact there are a few negative reviews about it being “too big”, sigh, really!  One even said, “the picture makes it look smaller”, um, it is a picture with no other object for scale, face palm moment I guess.

The dimensions of the bag are 35.00″ x 13.00″ x 12.00″ and it really carries a lot of gear.  I did manage to kill one, after many many airline trips where I used it to carry t-shirts.  I am talking tight packed, rolled shirts, over 150 pounds of them!  Even then it beat the shipping charges I would have paid to mail them ahead of time and send the unsold ones back home!

The failure is was at the one point this bag could use some improvement.  There are four rubber feet on the bottom.  When thrown (think airline employees) and heavily loaded sooner or later they tear off and eventually that wears the bag out.

Used as a vehicle kit bag, and set down vs. thrown (ie the way you handle gear when you actually own it), they are extremely long lasting.  I’ll be honest this is not a bag like John Willis at SOE Tactical Gear would build, however, old John doesn’t make a bag anything like this one.  In fact I can’t find anything quite like this bag when you factor in all the compartments and the comfort of carrying it along with the durability.

I use this bag for my vehicle based bug out kits and air travel mostly.  I have talked to the guy who fills my CO2 tank about this bag too.  For you home brewers the best place to get CO2 tanks filled is a airsoft store by the way.  The guy I use has a store and a huge play area for paint ball and airsoft both.  He said about half of all players tend to use this bag for their gear, due to capacity, longevity and comfort of carry.

So if you have need of a large capacity duffel give the UTG Ranger Field Bag a shot.  I think you will be quite happy with it.

Remember you can always find the TSP Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop online you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – This video reviews three UTG Bags, the third one is the UTG Ranger Field Bag.  It does a good job of showing you all the features and how big it really is.  You can jump to about 6:40 if you just want that review.

By the way the second bag reviewed the UTG SWAT Responder Range Bag was an outstanding range bag, with huge capacity for such a small bag.  I still have one I bought before I even started TSP, I now use if for my blow back airsoft hand gun gear.  Sadly UTG stopped making it.  UTG if you are listening, two things.  1.  Bring Back the SWAT Responder Range Bag and 2.  Loose the feet on the Ranger Field bag, it would make a great product even better.

Frontier Co-op Organic Valerian Root – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Frontier Co-op Organic Valerian Root.  Before we continue due to the content below I have to give a disclaimer, I am not a doctor, I don’t even pretend to be one on TV.  While I am a life time user of herbs, I am also not a certified herbalist, nothing I am about to say should be seen is medical or nutritional advice.  It is just my personal experience.

So about two years ago I set out to create a “bed time tea”, my goal was a tea that would set the mind at ease and get you to sleep fast.  I built this tea on valerian root for many reasons.  You can find a wide range of Valerian’s uses at Web MD, chief among them though are insomnia and relaxing muscle and relieving aches and pains.

Now there are a ton of teas out there with Valerian in it, but I like to mix my own teas, simply put buying herbs in bulk saves money and you can make custom blends.  Last week I mentioned in my interview with herbalist Cat Ellis that I had a “night time tea that tasted like gym socks but would knock you flat out” and that resulted in a ton of requests for the recipe.

So I decided to feature Valerian today and give away that recipe, all but two ingredients can be purchased at Amazon, I’ll give a few sources for them in the P.S. below.  Note that the parts below are by volume, not weight…

I make this tea at about 2 heaping tablespoons to the cup, note that this doesn’t taste good.  Frankly it isn’t that bad, I am setting the expectation bar low however, unlike my other teas you are not drinking this one for the flavor.  I do sweeten this one with honey.

I can’t explain this but if you want this tea to work my best results seem to come from going to bed within 30 minutes or less of consuming it. If you wait much longer the effects seem to change to relaxed but alert.  However, if you go strait to bed you generally crash and sleep solid though the night, at least I do.

It also for me seems to increase the vividness of my dreams.  Note that I am a long time student of lucid dreaming and have trained myself to recognize dreams and awaken within them.  This is beyond the scope of this review but there is lots of info online about doing it.   I will talk just a tiny bit about it in today’s on air IOTD segment.

So if you want to give this a try, you can simply mix it up and give it a go, but I will caution that I take no regular medications and I don’t know what interactions these herbs could have with pharmaceuticals.  So please check with your doctor before using these are any herbs if you have any physical conditions or side effects.  Again I am not a doctor or certified herbalist, I am not giving medial advice, I am just telling you my personal experiences.

So check out Frontier Co-op Organic Valerian Root today.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop online you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – The herb you can’t get on Amazon for some reason is Damiana Leaf.  You can make the tea without it, it will still work.  That said it is a wonderful herb that in my view really enhances this tea.  If you skip the Damiana increase the Valerian to 4 parts to rebalance the recipe a bit.

P.S.S.  Here is a simplified recipe if you just want to give it a try without all the other herbs.  Go with 2 parts of Valerian to 1 part of mint.  This will be a quite sedative tea and aid in falling asleep for many people.  Again I recommend hitting the pillow no more than 30 minutes after consuming it.

Lodge Carbon Steel Seasoned Skillet – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Lodge Carbon Steel Seasoned Skillet.  These are my go to for searing and if you ever go to a professional restaurant where a lot of searing happens you will likely see dozens of these in use, and there is a reason, they work really damn good.

There are quite a few options from 8 inches up to a huge 15 inch one with double handles.  I currently own an 8 and 12 inch and they serve my needs very well.

I am a huge fan of old cast iron but it is heavy and it is not efficient when it comes to getting it hot, what it is good at is staying hot once you get it there.   Thinner carbon steel is efficient at getting hot quickly.  These come pre seasoned and if you use proper care they will stay stick free and last forever.

When I first got these pans I really used them the most for searing off meat in two ways.

One –  I will sear steaks and such BEFORE finishing on the grill or in the oven.  They provide the best sear I have ever gotten and if you are finishing in the oven they can go strait in.

Two – For searing after a sous vide cook.  Again they are just the best thing I have found.

But over this year that has changed.  First I found the factory seasoning on them to be very good, way better than I expected.  They are very low stick, note I didn’t say non stick.  I have pretty much given up on other cookware at this point and use Lodge along with old vintage Griswold Cast Iron (scavenged from antique malls) exclusively.

The primary advantage of the carbon skillets over the cast iron is they heat up a lot faster and are easier to get searing hot.  They also weigh less so they are easier to toss food around with when you don’t want to use a spatula and damage food by doing so.

After trying both expensive and low cost cookware over the years today I do almost 90% of my cooking with the following

My current plans are over time to add a Lodge Mini Cast Iron Wok, a Lodge 10 inch skillet and perhaps a second 8 inch skillet as they offer so much utility.  The mini wok seems like a great idea for stir frying sides of veggies for Dorothy and I when the big wok is a bit of over kill.  About the only other thing I am still in the market for is a great paella pan.  What is paella you say?  That will have to wait for another day.

Lastly as a prepper, when it comes to carbon steel pans, I love the efficiency here. If you are ever in a situation where fuel needs to be rationed you want a pan that heats up fast, cooks fast and finishes fast.  So check out Lodge’s Carbon Steel Skillets today.

The FURminator deShedding Tool for Dogs – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the The FURminator deShedding Tool for Dogs.  We first learned of this tool from our vet back when we had our Siberian Husky named Lakota.  Let me tell you there is shedding and then there is Husky Shedding.  It is like living with two Chows, a Sheep Dog and a German Shepard at one time!  How one relatively small animal can make so much hair is beyond me.

So our vet proceeded to brush him and we were sold, enough fluffy undercoat to make a small pillow came off in a few minutes.  We bought one, of course the mark up was very high.  When we later found them in pet stores they were still very expensive.  We started using some off brand versions, and most were good, not as good but good enough.

Now this is why I love the free market.  FURminator was able to keep its hold on some of its really unique stuff with patents but the basic concept is pretty simple.  So a bunch of Chinese hack shops and creative American entrepreneurs emulated it and sold a good product for a much lower price.  Instead of acting like a child and suing over an “idea” FURminator understood they were no longer alone in the market, adjusted pricing, still charges a bit more but now their price is fair for the product.  Well in almost every instance.

For some reason they are still charging 45 dollars for the “Giant Size Short Hair” version the good news is you don’t need it, and it isn’t that much bigger than the Large Size anyway.  For some odd reason the long hair giant one is no where nears as expensive.

So how much is the large sized one now that I scared you with 45 bucks for a freaking dog brush?  Try this, $14.89 while similar knock offs like the Brandismo Groomer sell for just a couple dollars less at $12.97.  It is almost like the free market works or something crazy like that.

So why not just save the buck ninety two and buy the knock off, I mean a buck is a buck right?  Yes but the FURminator is better and more that two dollars so.  The first reason is unlike the knock offs the FURminator can be bought for short or long hair dogs.  You make that call this way, if your dogs majority of hair (specifically undercoat) is 2 inches or longer buy the long.

If it is shorter on average buy the short version. In my experience if you are borderline buy the long.  What you don’t want to do is use the long version on a truly short haired dog or it can irritate the skin.  Personally we have the giant long hair model (17 bucks) for Lucy and Max (she is only 50 pounds and he is about 150) and it works fine for both of them.  We have a large short hair model (like 10 bucks) for Charlie.  Unless your dog is really small the large size seems best all around to me.

The amount of hair this thing removes is unbelievable.  The image below is from a Amazon Customer’s Review.  It is not an exaggeration, trust me we find dog hair in birds nests around our farm when Dorothy bushes Max during his spring blow outs.

There are a variety of sizes you can select from Extra Small to Giant.  The price changes with options of short and long as size but everything is in the 10-17 dollar range except the short hair giant one which again is 45 bucks.  I think the people at FURminator still haven’t gotten the memo on that one!  The rest are just great and very good values for the price.

The other big advantage of FURminator over knock offs is the hair removal button.  You push it with your thumb and a mechanism pushes the hair out of the fine comb.  You still need to pull it out by hand but it makes getting the comb fully clear a lot easier.   And that is the key to getting the most out of brushing your pups with the FURminator, clean it out as you go often.

So if you have had enough of dog hair or cat hair, yes they work on cats too and even have a cat specific model (though I think it is just the small dog one in a different color, marketing and all you know), check out the FURminator today.  Keep in mind this is a product with 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 10,000 yea, 10 fricken thousand reviews on Amazon.  Add to that it has a A grade on Fakespot and it is hard to find a product more well loved by its customers.  Try it and you will understand why.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop online you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – This is a great video showing this product work.  The resolution is poor and the music is like really bad 70s porn or something but this is the best video with the most variety of dogs being brushed I could find, yea it really and I mean really is the best thing on the market.

K&H Ultimate All-In-One Stock Tank De-Icer – Item of the Day

deicer

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the K&H Ultimate All-In-One Stock Tank De-Icer.  Winter is either here or coming soon depending on where you live.  I love these De-Icers in my view it is the best option on the market.

They come in several sizes including…

  • 250 Watts
  • 500 Watts
  • 750 Watts
  • 1000 Watts and
  • 1500 Watts

Why this Item Rocks!

Its in the name, “all in one” that is what you get an all in one solution.  Previously I have reviewed the thermocube, it is a great product and would be ideal for use with many stock tank heaters.  Why have your heater running when it is 50 degrees?

But you don’t need a thermocube that feature is built in.  When your water hits 35 degrees the heater comes on, all by itself and when it hits 45 it shuts off.  So you only draw power when you need it.

Choosing the Right Sized Heater for your Needs

Personally I use the 250 watt models.  There are a few reasons for this.  First and foremost my belief is when you use anything electrical you should use as little power as necessary to do the job. In my climate for a 50 gallon tank 250 watts is sufficient.

I also run two (two is one and one is none you know right) to two separate 50 gallon stock tanks.  If I ran two 500s that would put a 1000 watt draw on a single circuit doing other things as well and could pop the breaker.  These are only useful if they work you know.

In the end you should consult K&Hs great chart right here, just click on it for a full sized view.

khchart

You will note that for my zone (USDA 8) a 50 gallon tank requires a 250 watt heater.  So that works for my needs.  I personally only use mine to make sure there is some water available at all times for my ducks.

These can be used as floating heaters or submerged by removing the foam that makes them float.  This gives you flexibility.  Say you want to keep a poultry watering going you can put one of these inside it and let it sink.  To me for a stock tank you want it floating because it ices up from the top down.

In any event if you want to keep your critters watered this coming winter, check out the K&H Ultimate All-In-One Stock Tank De-Icer today.

Monoprice Releasable Cable Ties – Item of the Day

cabeltiesEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is something I feel no one should be without.  They just do too much, for too little cost to not have some.  They are Monoprice Releasable Cable Ties and at only seven bucks and some change for 100 pieces they are a steal.

Get a few bags and do the following.  Make up bundles of about 20-30 a bundle.  Just use one tie to hold the rest together.  Put a bundle in your BOBs, put one in every glove box of your vehicles, put some in your garage where you can see them and just grab them, etc.  Heck I keep half a dozen as part of my EDC, you don’t even notice them in a cargo pocket until you need them.

The key is the releasable part!  We even use these for keeping gates closed on our low fences for our ducks.  I keep a few tied on top of various fences all over the property, so if you need one there is always one close by.   They are very strong and stay flexible a long time.  They tend to last about 1.5-2 years if in direct sun before becoming brittle.  Otherwise they seem to last forever.

I use them for many other things as well.  I use them to tie up new seedling trees for say a month until they stiffen up.  Since you can remove and reuse them it is cheaper than plant tape.  I use them to tie 4 large hog panels into a square and make an on the fly animal pen.  There is no limit to how useful these things are.

Sure they are kind of small at 6 inches, but you want 18 inches?  Put three together and when you don’t need that any more take them apart.

So just how versatile are cable ties in general, okay I am going to tell you a story, I am NOT SUGGESTING THAT you do it, it is just what happened.  Many years ago when I was in the Army I had two friends, Brad and Dean.  Dean was the one that owned a truck and he was a “character” to say the least.

Dean would just toss Brad or I the keys anytime we needed his truck.  One day we wanted to run to the PX, so Dean tosses Brad the keys.  In we jump and to the PX and back we go, beer run of course.  Brad is a typical guy from Southern Louisiana so he bends speed limits till they break.  We get back an Dean says, “oh yea, I should of told y’all to take it easy until the new tie rod gets here”.

Brand and I get down and look and see that fricken Dean had used 4 tie wraps to hold a broken tie rod together.  As in it had broken in two and he tie wrapped it back together.   For those that don’t know, the tie rod holds the front searing brackets to the frame so you can turn.   Kind of an important function!  So Brad almost kills Dean but later we laughed about it, because when you are 20 you are stupid!

That has always stuck with me and while I would not replicate it as a “temporary repair”, I would replicate it with great care and driving very slowly to get a vehicle to safety in a similar situation.   Trust me and if you don’t keep cable ties in your preps, start doing so and the best ones for flexibility and usefulness are Monoprice Releasable Cable Ties.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. I have brought this item back a few times, the reason is simple, if I made a list of the top 5 most useful things on my homestead, I am sure it would change over time, but these would never fail to make the list.

Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes.  I have tried a variety of different products for this need and have settled on these.  As many of you know we have three dogs.  A giant German Sheapard named Max, a Pit-Pointer Mix named Charlie and a Pitskey named Lucy.  A Pitskey is a Siberian Husky crossed with a Pit by the way.

I use this product on all of them.  They get a good ear cleaning on the first of the month when they get their heart worm medication.  Simple and easy to remember.  For Charlie and Lucy this is all they need.  Generally a bit of gunk comes out of both of them but it isn’t much.  Their ears stay clean and don’t put off any odors at all.

Max though has always been a problem pup when it comes to his ears, and worse he doesn’t really like having them cleaned.  I don’t know if you have ever tried to get a 150 dog to do something he doesn’t want to do, but it is a hell of a case for good training.  Charlie and Lucy seem to actually enjoy getting their ears cleaned but not Max, it is like dealing with a pouting puppy every time.

But we get it done and it works.  Before I found these I had to clean his ears about 1-3 times a week, depending on the time of the year.  Some nights he’d wake me up shaking his head because his ears bothered him badly.  I’d have to get up and deal with his sulking and clean his ears at 2Am.

Now I simply clean Max’s on the 1st and 15th and even he seems to remain clear, happy and free of the dreaded “stinky ear”.  As the label indicates they use a combination of Aloe and Eucalyptus oil.

This certainly is not some beyond organic all natural product and it has some conventional ingredients but nothing I consider truly harmful and above all they work.  And they work damn good.  The price is right at 11 dollars for 100 pads and at my use rate one pack of 100 lasts me about a year.  Note that they may not last as long for you if you have more dogs of a pup with a real problem needing a lot more cleaning.

On Max this is what I did, when I got them I cleaned his ears once a day for a week, he was not happy about this.  I then went to once a week for a month, then went to my routine of twice a month.  I have been doing that now for about 4 months and he has stayed a happy and clean eared canine.

Anyway if you want to keep your packs ears in top notch shape, I recommend checking out Aromacare Pet Ear Wipes today.  I think you will quickly see why they have 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 280 reviews along with an A grade on Fakespot.
