  1. While not inexpensive, I’ve had a Weston pro (now called pro 3000) for 5 years with A LOT of use. We’re talking thousands of seals. It’s easy to service as I’ve replaced both the gasket and heating element due to the amount of use.  It will seal through moisture.

Great source of vac bags is foodvacbags.com

Great prices, stupid fast shipping and responsive customer service. These guys might even be a target to get an MSB discount.

  2. Nice to hear the mention of W. H. Seward. I live less than 20 miles from his house, so everyone around here is very aware of his roles in history. As you know, he was also Sec. of State under Lincoln, one of the “team of rivals.” Worth mentioning that he was very severely wounded in an attempted assassination the same night as Lincoln’s; so when he negotiated the purchase of Alaska, it was

As you know, he was also Sec. of State under Lincoln, one of the “team of rivals.” Worth mentioning that he was very severely wounded in an attempted assassination the same night as Lincoln’s; so when he negotiated the purchase of Alaska, it was in a time of his life when he was in daily pain, and bereaved as well. But not lacking in vision, the will to accomplish it, or the toughness not to give a darn what people thought.

  4. To be honest, I think the weather and climate in most of Alaska is what has allowed Alaska to be relatively “more free” than most other states… a lot of people like the IDEA of living in Alaska more than the reality, so many who try move out after awhile.  That being said, since growing up there I have seen the average attitudes, at least in the Anchorage metro area, shift slowly and steadily to a more statist mindset. I don’t think it’s the dominant mindset YET and still faces a lot of resistance (though it’s been more than two years since I’ve been back home so I could be wrong), but it’s been a trend since before the host of reality TV shows came about.

It’s still much better than a lot of other places I’ve been lived though, and I do miss it terribly.  I do want to go back to live there again when I’ve accomplished what I want here and when my wanderlust ebbs, or at least for part of the year. One of the things that appeals to me about Mongolia is the similar level of relative freedom like in rural and small-town Alaska, but still it’s just not QUITE the same. Like with many who were born and/or grew up there, I think it’s just a matter of time until it draws me back.

  5. Re: “Organic” Cheetos

Here they sell “Seaweed”-flavored Cheetos, imported from South Korea or Taiwan I think. Haven’t tried it yet, and understandably I have very little desire to  😉

  6. Cat Stevens’ “I Love My Dog”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWT2qHVftGk

First two lines of the lyrics (to give you the feeling of the song):

I love my dog as much as I love you,

But you may fade, my dog will always come through.
