CamelBack M.U.L.E. – Item of the Day — 8 Comments

  1. Do you guys only wear these while out on hikes and where you will be away for a long time? I often find myself working out around my house maybe a 2-3 minute walk from the house. So I’ll often go until I am dangerously dehydrated before slumping back to get water. But I just can’t imagine building a coop or digging a hole wearing a backpack. But if that’s what you guys do I’ll try!

  2. Used camelbacks and knockoffs for years. Always need a good pack. I have settled in on a Geigerrig pack, because I like the fact it can be pressurized and used to was off hands, scrapes and anything else you need within reason. Many sizes and styles for all too.

  3. Wouldn’t go into hurricane season without one. My LOBO (pretty much the same as a MULE but 2L) is going strong at 15 years of weekly use. Camelbak stuff lasts.

  4. I have a MULE as well. Bought it in 2010 and it’s the “military/tactical” version with the MOLLE webbing (which is nice if I’m going on a longer hike and want to strap on a IFAK or other cargo pouch.)

What I really like is how versatile it is. It doubles as a range bag for me, you can break down an AR and stow in the main compartment and throw a bunch of mags in the back pouch. Your shoulders will thank you given the great padding it has, PLUS my favorite feature is that it has a hip strap that can be utilized when you’re fully loaded but can be tucked away when you don’t need any additional support.

I’ve used it on multi-day trips and found the capacity to be sufficient for everything I needed. For hiking and hammock camping, this thing is perfect.

  5. I use one from
Blackhawk forget the name but holds 2.5 litters of water and my pistol xtra mags and still plenty of storage space

    • There are some 4L models out there, none though that I would recommend for a quality investment.  3L is a lot of water by the way, about 3/4th of a gallon.  If you want to pack more than that I’d start looking to canteens, etc.  You can only carry so much water on your body, I mean 2 gallons is 16 pounds, just sayin.

  6. Now that I’ve bought mine, I’ll share. At least in the New Orleans area, Academy has been closing out the tacticool version of the M.U.L.E. and the Thermobak for about half off.
