FermentEm 8-Piece Fermenting Kit – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the FermentEm 8-Piece Fermenting Kit.  Recently I featured my favorite fermentation crock and got an email that said the following…

Jack I want to get into fermented foods but would prefer to make a lot of different small batches, what is the best and most fool proof way to ferment in jars.

There are many ways to ferment in jars, one can simply drill out a ball jar lid and insert a airlock like for making wine, but it isn’t fool proof. This item is as close as possible to that.

The key is these are waterless locks, there is no water to dry out, or be sucked into your jar.  These guys solve that problem and they go on ANY wide mouth ball jar.

And for only 33 dollars you get 8 of them.  That is only $4.12 a piece!  And with this you could have a half gallon of kraut in one jar, a quart of Tomatillo Salsa in another, a quart of Celery Mint Salad in another and say a pint of garlic scape paste in another.  Then you’d still have 4 more lids to work with.  You might even keep half and give the other half as a gift if depending on how much fermenting you want to do.

Some additional items you may want to consider getting along with this include…

  • Fermented Vegetables by Christopher and Kristen Shockey – This is my favorite book on fermenting vegetables and far and away the best book on the subject for people new to the art of fermentation.
  • Sauer Stones – Large Glass Fermentation Weights – You don’t need special weights for this but they are really nice, and they are foolproof.  I prefer them to say using a bag full of water.  As a fermenter you learn fast, keep things under the brine and all will be fine.

And you guys know what, at 11 days till Christmas there is still time to have some fermented veggies on the Christmas dinner table.  So if big expensive crocks have been putting you off on this skill set, pick up some ball jars and the FermentEm 8-Piece Fermenting Kit and get fermenting.  Your family and your body will thank you for it.

  1. Hey,

I’ve just gotten into fermentation, with the first batch sitting on my shelves in all their glory ready to be sampled in another couple of weeks. I did a bunch of reading before-hand, and settled on the Mason Tops “Pickle Pipe” silicone airlocks for my small batches (and a K&K crock for large batch, for what it’s worth).

I was going to see how my first run turned out and, assuming it went well, I was going to send you a message: “Hey Jack, you’ve gotta check these out and maybe feature them in your Amazon Reviews!”

Now you’ve stolen my thunder! Or on the upside you’ve demonstrated that this is a timely topic to discuss…

Anyhow, here’s a link to the Masontops.com product. They seem to be working well, but I can’t endorse them further than that until I’ve sampled the regular kraut, the lemon-dill kraut, the blaukraut, the fermented spinach, and the carrots that are working on my shelves.

      Those seem pretty cool.

    • We use both Pickle Pipes and the Sauer Stones (Jack’s recommendation above) all the time.

Also, any of the Sandor Katz books on fermenting are gold too. He is a strange bird, but I like his style.

  2. PS – agree that the Shockey book is a great resource!

  3. See what happens when you wait too long!

Item currently unavailable. Darnit… have to put this in my wish list and come back to it.

  4. Is it just me, or does the link for the Sauer Stones not take you to the stones mentioned, but rather a traditional air-lock lid for mason jars?

Try it now you will find an equivlent product.

Go to google and search for sauer stones and you will see that something weird happened at amazon.

    • Thanks, those were some of the the ones I found when I searched after the link went wonky. I wonder what happened to the others. Yay technology.
