Etekcity Lasergrip Digital Laser Temperature Gun – Item of the Day

tempgun

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Etekcity Lasergrip Digital Laser Temperature Gun.  This thing is cool it is basically a very accurate digital thermometer you use by just pointing it at a surface and pulling the trigger.  It emits a small red lazer dot, you put that dot where you want to know the temperature and just like that you know the temp.

So what can you do with that, oh so much.  Here are just a few things you can do with a temp gun.

The other day my buddy and I were working on my new aquaponics system and were wondering how much water the rain tanks were holding off of my barn.  Point this thing at it and look for where the temp falls off, there is your water line.

Cooking something that says to saute at say 220 degrees for your pan temp, how exactly do you get that info, well point, pull the trigger and done.  Same thing with your grill, find those cool and hotter spots on that grill for cooking and moving food to cooler safe spaces.

Want to know how much cooler that area under shade or shade cloth really is, not just the air temperature but the surface temps where say your live stock is living, point and pull and you know.

How about finding either warm or cool micro climates for planting trees, shrubs, etc on your property.  Or how about finding out how successful your micro climates you create on purpose are?  For instance the berms we put in our west pasture are on average 20 degrees cooler than the ground surface of the surrounding area, how do we know, with one of these.

What about finding hot or cold loss areas around your house so you can shore up energy losses.  As we all know the best ROI on energy isn’t solar panels, it is increasing efficiency of what ever system you have for energy.

Do you know how well your AC is working.  Try this take this and point it at your air intake and get a reading.  Let your AC run for a few minutes than take a look at the temps on your ACs output vents.  The difference in temps is the amount of cooling your AC is currently giving you.

Is your wood burning stove hitting a solid 400-600 degrees for a good efficient burn, are you sure, you could be sure you know.

So how many things in the world do this much for under 20 bucks?  Seriously?  One word of advice is measure temps at about 1 foot from the surface for best accuracy.  That is how the unit is calibrated to work best.

So check out the Etekcity Lasergrip Digital Laser Temperature Gun today and let me know your thoughts on other things that it can do in the comments below.

Bitcoin Holders Please Read This

As many of you know I went into mostly cash from my Bitcoin position leading up to tomorrow’s fork.  There were and in many ways are still to many unknowns.  However I took advantage of one of the many dips between my exit and today and bought about half of it back.

My ordinal intention was to once again exit before the fork, but now there are a lot more knowns.

I think we are going to get a better bitcoin and we are also going to get something called bitcoin cash.  However Coinbase has made a decision to not support bitcoin cash, and personally I have my doubts about their motives.  It could be they plan to claim all bitcoin cash for themselves.

Well what I am doing now is holding the bitcoin I bought back in a way where I can end up with equal amounts of bitcoin AND bitcoin cash after this mess is over and done with!

How can you do this, well one way is to right now move your bitcoin into an off chain wallet.  Others include….

  • Kraken is going to support both options, while I don’t think you should keep a lot of bitcoin on an exchange this is one option.
  • I have been told bittrex is also supporting both options, same concerns as Kraken but again if you are holding it there it looks to me like you will get to have both when this is all over.
  • Jaxx has announced coming support for Bitcoin Cash.  Jaxx users can do nothing and just wait for full integration and then you will apparently just have both once it is done.  Software wallets are not the most secure way to hold bitcoin but I personally think Jaxx is safer than an exchange.
    `
Further with Jaxx you always hold your own private key so you can always choose to follow any chain you want with your Bitcoin.  So Jaxx may be the safest and easiest way to end up with both Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash for newbies who are not sure how to take their Bitcoin off chain yet.   Jaxx recently announced full support for Bitcoin Cash.  You can read all about that here.

As always this is not investment advice but I feel obligated to let this audience know what I am doing personally with bitcoin and all cryptocurrencies since I have discussed it so much on the air and many of you are holding crypto due to that.

Also there is a likely reality that bitcoin cash may be a total flop and not worth a damn, so don’t put money at risk to capture it, however, to me it just seems if you are holding any bitcoin now, before the fork move it so you can at least have the option to claim it.  Not to seems foolish to me.

For more info here is a list of exchanges that will support the fork.  Here is one opinion that basically bitcoin cash won’t be a big deal.

Cable Matters 6-Outlet Wall Mount Surge Protector – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Cable Matters 6-Outlet Wall Mount Surge Protector and it is one of my favorite little gadgets for making my life easier.  It is available in both black and white depending on your preferences.

There are so many reasons I love this thing.  First is my wife and her fricken air fresheners that plug in.  She has them all over, and okay they smell nice but plug in one and you loose two outlets.  This lets me take them back for more practical things like my favorite power failure lights.  But I will admit those too take way an outlet and most of the time it doesn’t matter.

But then you are cooking and want to plug in your spice grinder or some other gadget, fricken outlet is blocked.  By expanding dual boxes into quads or six ways you can still plug in another item or two.

Next there are the USB ports, these have two 2.4 amp charging ports for USB devices.  While not as fast as 3.1 USB ports they are not snails either.  I don’t really use them that much anyway because we have a charging station in the dining room.  But there are times when the phone is low and say I am cooking, I want to plug it in but am listening to music and don’t want to walk to the other room to skip songs, etc.

The next thing I love is something that could be a problem for some folks or in some rooms, suffice to say I won’t put one of these in my bedrooms.  Why?  Well they have a green power indicator light on them.  It is actually bright enough to be like a night light.  So when you get up in the night you have enough light not to stub your toe.  I am sure you could paint over part of this light to dim it down a bit if you wanted to.

Last but not least the entire unite is a surge protector that protects your electronic devices from surges.  And to top it all off, they give you two micro USB charging cables with it for free, total cost, 17 bucks with free shipping on Prime.

Frankly I have looked at dozens of similar products and for the money nothing beats this one.  So check out the Cable Matters 6-Outlet Wall Mount Surge Protector today and take back your outlets!

Red Star Cuvee & Pasteur Blanc Yeasts Item of the Day

cuveeEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is a two fer, because that is how I use them.  This is my go to yeast blend for small batch mead making.

I use one packet of each in both one and five gallon batches.

Yes, you can use part of a packet for a one gallon batch but when you realize how inexpensive it really is you will likely just opt for VERY fast fully attenuated fermentation.

The Two Items are…

  1.  Red Star Cuvee Yeast (pronounced cu vey)
  2.  Red Star Pasteur Blanc

Again I use one of each in my mead batches, it is the fastest finishing yeast blend I have come up with, it finishes nice and dry at 2.5 pounds to the gallon and leaves just a hint of sweetness at 3 pounds to the gallon which has become my go to during my “year of mead” experiments.

There are a few things to know about these guys to get the right deal on Amazon.

  1. Do not buy anything less than a 10 pack
  2. They are add on items so combine them or add them to other orders
  3. Don’t get screwed, there is NO SUCH THING as “Pasteur Blanc Champagne Yeast”

Item one is very self explanatory, let me explain the other two.  Okay as you might imagine shipping you 6 bucks worth of yeast would kill Amazon and its vendors on shipping, especially for prime members.  So they either have to jack up the price or charge more for shipping than the item itself  So what they have done with a lot of small items is require a minimum order of 25-50 dollars depending on the item.

So make note if you are a mead maker and just remember to add these guys the next time you order other stuff or add some cool mead making supplies like say Fermax Yeast Nutrient, Oak Infusion Spirals or say some awesome Vanilla Beans to your order.

blancOn point three, there are one or two vendors on Amazon selling an item listed as “Pasteur Blanc Champagne Yeast”, again such a thing does NOT exist, there is Pasteur Blanc an there is Pasteur Champagne, the packs are very similar yellow colors but again they are NOT the same yeast.

So make sure you are getting the ones I have linked to in this post if you want to use or try my recommended yeast blend.

For what it is worth, Pasteur Champagne is a fine yeast, it makes a decent mead,  it just doesn’t finish as fast and as clean as actual Pasteur Blanc does when teamed up with Cuvee.

I also do not have a clue as to what exact magic goes on when you use this blend, it was a happy accident, I just know it works.

Episode-2051- The Future of Housing and Intentional Communities

Since TSP announced the original Permaethos Model, Rob Kish has been working to make it a reality- with a few twists. He is a Manufacturing Engineer Technician for a medical equipment manufacturer and uses Permaculture troubleshooting methodology in an industry dominated by lean manufacturing to reduce costs and labor.

He joins us today to discuss my original vision for PermaEthos, a vision that never was achieved and frankly never attempted.

Easy Weight – Fermentation Weights – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day are Easy Weight – Fermentation Weights.  I really like these things, though I have yet to order them.  They started turning up in my sales reports and I have done enough research to recommend them.

Frankly the idea is so simple that it really doesn’t seem much could go wrong with it.  In the past I have reviewed many products for fermenting in jars including the FermentEm 8-Piece Fermenting Kit and the Masontops Complete Mason Jar Fermentation Kit.  Both are great products that let you ferment with standard mason jars.  The MasonTops product also offers what they call pebbles, small round glass weights to hold your ferment under the brine, I have them, I really like them, but I don’t love them.

Why do I like them but not love them?  Well, they are smooth and a bit hard to put in nice and level and a bit of a pain to remove as well, as they do fit so perfectly.

Frankly I think I am going to love the Easy Weight – Fermentation Weights because they offer the function of the pebbles with the added feature of something as rudimentary as a handle.  This idea is so simple you wonder why someone didn’t do it sooner.

When you are fermenting the biggest rule to follow is “keep it under the brine and everything will be fine”.  These guys let you do that and make it convenient too.  At 21.99 per four they are quite affordable at about 5.50 a piece.  Do note they only come in one size, wide mouth mason jars.  Frankly I don’t use anything but wide mouth jars for fermentation anyway, so check out Easy Weight – Fermentation Weights today and make your fermentations even better than they already are.

Episode-2050- A Current Look at the Great Lie of Dichotomy

Occasionally I mention the “false dichotomy” but I have not done a full episode dedicated to it since Episode-874 back in April of 2012.  That is more than 5 years ago!  Since that time many of my positions have evolved but the basic concept of the false dichotomy remains.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and nothing more clearly illustrates it than this common scenario.  I will post something on say facebook along with my opinion.  In that ONE SAME post upset people will attack me for my view in the comments.  That alone means nothing but here is where it gets interesting.

In that same set of comments I will be called both a

  1.  Liberal democrat snowflake that needs a safe space
  2.  And a hateful conservative republican that is to stupid and greedy to care about people

Or some such version there of!  Isn’t this ironic?  That two people that literally hate each other, will both hate me and accuse me of being the other side that also hates me?  I ask you does this make any logical sense?  No it doesn’t, until you approach the question from the right angle, when we ask why this happens, vs. simply if it makes sense, it actually makes perfect sense.
