1400 Gallon Timber Frame Tank Aquatic System Build

This project was a long time coming, I transformed a platform we had built for a water catchment tank into a 1400ish gallon fish tank using a EDPM liner.

The system currently has 4 ebb and flow beds but this is not true aquaponics but rather an aquatic system using a aquaponics component as a bio filtration system.

The body of this is built with 4×4 pressure treated lumber designed for ground contact.  The first layer is 4 inches below grade and held into the limestone with 12 inch hot dipped galvanized spikes, which were aided in penetration by hammer drilling into the limestone layer.  The other layers are each attached with 20, 6-inch galvanized spikes per course (5 per piece of lumber).  Translation it isn’t going anyway.

Plans now include creating a floating plant island to prevent floating plants from being pummeled by the overflows and aeration wand.    Adding cinder block towers and benches for emergent vegetation and of course adding a lot more fish.  We also need to do some plain old landscaping around the area to make things look better now that the heavy part of the project is done.

Zymox Pet Spray with Hydrocortisone – TSP Item of the Day

zymoxEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Zymox Pet Spray with Hydrocortisone.  As  you may remember my buddy Charlie the Pitbull-Pointer had some issues with his back paws.  We are pretty sure that evil fire ants started the issue and caused him to chew both his paws pretty raw.

Well as I reported in another review we used a combination of comfrey ointment and bitter apple spray to deal with it.  It healed very well over all, but one spot high up on his back paw seemed fine one day then was bloody red the next.

Time to up the game.  So I applied Zymox Pet Spray with Hydrocortisone and in a single day the improvement was marked.  It must taste like crap so over spraying with bitter apple has not been necessary.  He has now been on it for 3 days and the sore is basically just a spot with hair missing now, it really isn’t a sore any longer.

Comfrey was able to do the job here but a dog is not a person and sometimes a pup can’t resist the urge to chew, even though bitter apple spray.  Then it is time for something with Hydrocortisone in it.  This spray also has a three enzyme blend of lactoperoxidose, lysozyme and lactoferrin that effectively destroys bacterial, viral and fungal microorganisms. These enzymes are derived from natural milk protein peroxidases according to the manufacturer.

If you check the reviews on Amazon you will find many dog and cat owners consider this stuff a God send.  That is why it sits with 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 400 reviews.  So this is another item that belongs in your “Dogie First Aid Kit” (aka DFAK) because it works so well.

The key with hot spots and the like is get them treated before they become chronic and spread.  I like to rely on herbals but as soon as he made the sore bloody it was either this or the “cone of shame” and I just didn’t want my buddy in the cone.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – This is not medical advice just personal experience.  Since starting using this we have several times used it for ourselves.  Last fall I got a small mark on my hand and assumed it was a scratch from some hardware cloth, it was to small poke marks, yea ended up being a spider bite, what type I don’t know.  While it wasn’t something dangerous it started getting worse and worse, comfrey was no help, this stopped it cold.  Just today I got tore up moving some wood by fire ants, I spray the areas of my hands with this before the bites broke out, and they never did.  Again this IS NOT advice just a personal experience.

Pickerel Rush an Edible and Beautiful Plant for Your Water Garden

Big thanks to Nick Burtner at School of Permaculture (https://schoolofpermaculture.com) for posting about this plant being edible on Facebook.

Been growing it for years and never knew it was that type of resource.  The seeds are pretty good raw, I would say adding them to salads would be a good use, I am going to try toasting them gently to crisp them up a bit and bring out more flavor, when I do I will report back to you guys on the results.

Also here is a video by Green Dean on using this plant for edible purposes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKy6Ivh0HaE

Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter – Item of the Day

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Item of the day the Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter.  Long term listeners may be thinking oh this is an old one, and it is, sort of.  While doing research last week I found that Whistler no longer makes the 800 Watt inverter that Steven Harris and I have both recommended for years.

So does the new Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter stand up to the old Whistler PRO800W Inverter?  Yes!  Yes it most certainly does.  Despite the few idiots writing low reviews (more on that in a minute) this is pretty much the same old Whister in a new body with a few small upgrades.

Just like the old model there are two AC outlets, however now the inverter has 2 vs. 1 USB port, which is great for charging smart devices while using the inverter for other things.  It also still has the most important safety features including, Electronic Circuit Protection consisting of Smart Surge Control, Overload/Voltage Protection, Short Circuit Protection, and Thermal Cutoff.

What about the idiotic negative reviews?  First there are a few legitimate ones where they say it is DOA, with any electronic product this can and does happen.  This is why I love Amazon if anything is wrong you exchange or return it.  Just consider they sell thousands of these a week, if .2% have a problem, a few will show up.  The beauty is with Amazon you have no risk, print a return label and exchange it or get a refund.  One reason right there I LOVE Amazon.

Most of the negatives are idiotic though.  People trying to pull 500 watts but plugging it into a cigarette lighter plug which can only handle 150 watts tops.  People saying that the back terminals are not threaded like the picture, well dummy that is because you ordered the 1200 watt one with heavier terminals for higher wattage.  Or someone saying it won’t run a microwave, well no shit!  I mean who would have ever expected that a 800 watt inverter would not be able to run an 1100 watt microwave?  Keep in mind these people breed and they vote!

This inverter is what it always has been a good low cost option for back up power when you need it.  It allows you with simply some extension cords and some power splitters to make use of the one or two “generators” sitting in your driveway or garage.  If you are sane you can power most things in your house with one or two of these just not all at the same time, you can run a fridge for a few hours to keep it cool then run other things.

It will easily run some LED lights to keep you able to see where things are.  It will of course give you all the power you need to charge all your devices, run a laptop and even a cable modem, again you just have to pick what you want to do at any time, you can’t do everything at once, but you can do an awful lot.

At 48.55 a piece I don’t know of any other single preparedness item that can do as much for under 50 bucks.  I also want to say this is a big time case for two is one and one is none.  This is a good product but inverters do fail, all electronics do, so keep two at least on hand.  So check out the Whistler XP800i 800 Watt Power Inverter today and consider adding it to your black out kit.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on online you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

P.S. – For more on using this item check out the podcast I did with Steven Harris on powering your house with your car.  In fact two of them, Part One and Part Two.

Episode-2033- Benjamin Page on The Pillars of Wellness

Ben Page starting listening to the survival podcast in July 2008 while going to chiropractic college in Davenport, Iowa. He lived 5 miles from college rode his bike to collage. It took him depending on the season between 15 and 45 minutes to get to college. He used that time to listen to the survival podcast and learn about modern survivalism and now considers himself to be a modern survivalist.

There is where his thought process went back to its roots and is why he is doing what he is doing know. Ben Page is a chiropractic physician where he focuses on what he calls the 4 vital points to wellness and how all 4 have to be in harmony to truly find wellness in ones life. He started a small family farm called Pastos Verdes Farm in southern Utah more then anything to provide for his family nutritious food that tastes good.

He farms using permaculture and regenerative methods. He uses Joel Salitin’s method to raise the meat birds. He also started a podcast in english called “The Wellness Farmer Podcast” and in Spanish called “El podcast la salud integral” where he podcasts once a week about the 4 pillars to health, which are adequate movement, nutrient dense food that is grown on fertile soil without chemicals, natural internal dialogue and chiropractic care.

After working with another chiropractor for 5 years he realized that he needed to move on and with the information he obtained listening to the survival podcast he started a new adventure. Ben now resides in Rosario, Argentina where he continues to serve the public as a chiropractic physician and continues to podcast about health and wellness. You could say that his business like many others was pushed forward and came into existence because of the Survival podcast.

Join Us Today as we Discuss…

  • How does modern survivalism enter into the pillars of wellness
  • What are the four pillars to health and wellness
  • What can we do to achieve adequate movement and proper posture
  • What is adequate movement in wellness
  • What does a diet in wellness consist of
  • How do we achieve wellness in our diet
  • What is natural internal dialogue
  • How do we achieve it
  • Why is chiropractic care one of the 4 pillars
  • Are there any examples that provide a template to achieve wellness

PDC in North Texas with Nicholas Burtner

Guys I just heard from Nicholas Burtner, who runs the School of Permaculture not too far from me here in North Texas, that they are now enrolling for their 2017 fall permaculture design course that start on July 8th. It is cool because first off it is local, and the team at SOP has extensive experience, locally, and in more 7 countries with a myriad of climate regions and design challenges.

Its flexible as it runs one weekend a month for a span of 6 months so you actually get to know your instructors and peers. There is nothing quite like the dynamics of an in person pdc. I do not even want to tell you the price because almost everywhere the course goes from anywhere 1700 to 2500 bucks, and they just really hook you up and thats all I’ll say.  Use this link to register:

https://schoolofpermaculture.com/events/monthly-permaculture-design-course-fall-2017-july-to-december-plano-tx/

P.S. – Nick is a good friend and a great teacher, he not only traveled to Australia to get his PDC directly from Geoff Lawton, he also interned under Geoff, so you know you will be in good hands.

IncuView All-In-One Automatic Egg Incubator – Item of the Day

incuviewEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is IncuView All-In-One Automatic Egg Incubator.  This is the absolute best incubator I have found without spending a fortune.  We have used it for hatching both chickens and ducks, with chickens our results were outstanding.  How about three batches of 26 eggs with a total number of hatched eggs of 76, that is 76 out of 78!

What I love about this incubator is everything is automated.  All you really need to do is keep an eye on humidity and add a bit of water when necessary.  You program the duration of incubation and the machine knows when to stop turning, you can also set how many times a day the machine turns the eggs.  And don’t let the word “program” scare you if you if you are a techniphobe, I hate programming “gadgets” but this thing is really easy.  The instructions are on one page front and back.

We have successfully incubated goose eggs in it and others have told us they use if for quail with great success.  Due to how the turner works, one turner works for everything.  It has a digitally controlled thermostat, so when you set it for say 99.5, that is what you get all the time.

There are cheaper incubators but then don’t have all these features.  They certainly do not hold temperature as well.  In my reptile breeding days I hatched literally hundreds of eggs in the well known Hova-Bator Incubator, yes it works, and it costs less, but is is a fiddly pain in the ass.  In fact since I got my IncuView, the only thing I use my Hova-Bator Incubator for is starting seeds in cold weather.

If I wanted to hatch say 75 – 100 eggs a batch, I would honestly buy three of these before I would buy an expensive large commercial incubator.   Like most products I settle on, this one just works, it always works and that is what wins my endorsement.

I would also like to suggest the following, this thing is kind of light weight, it is durable and ships well.  It is not something most people would use all year long.  So some of you may form groups and do a share with this item, either locally or by shipping it back and forth as needed.  I personally sent mine to Nicholas Ferguson, he hatched duck and chickens with it and then shipped it back USPS Priority Mail for like 10 bucks.  Just a thought.

In any event if you are looking to incubate eggs check out the, IncuViewTM All-In-One Automatic Egg Incubator, by the way this is actually a great time to do this.  Say you put eggs in on August, 1st.  You will have babies on August 21 or 28 depending on say ducks or chickens.    These birds will be 6 months old and start laying in mid February, right when most people are waiting another month to get brand new chicks.  Just a final thought.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop online you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

Episode-2032- Planning Your Future When the Future is Uncertain

We talk a lot about what I call “lifestyle design” around here.  When people hear that term they get the general idea, because the words are common.

  • Lifestyle – The way in which a person lives.
    ~
  • Design – Purpose, planning, intention and thought behind an action.

So lifestyle design means to put purpose, planning, intention and thought into how you live your life.  So yep people generally get the basic concept, what people usually struggle with though is designing a lifestyle for today that is resilient for tomorrow.

I think we have all had those moments, we are happy, really happy with our life as it is, then one or two things change and we are off the rails.  Sometimes these are external factors like a job loss.  Other times they are internal factors sticking with employment perhaps we realize we hate our jobs but hey it pays the bills.

Those are only two examples, and no one can plan for everything but today things are even more complicated.  We all know the next few decades will have more flux in them than anything man kind has yet to experience.  AI and automation will replace thousands of jobs, economic reality will be hitting hard for many governments and technology gaps will make finding jobs harder than ever.

Join Me Today to Discuss How to Plan For an Uncertain Future

  • Major shifts are coming in
    • Education
    • Technology
    • Manufacturing
    • Transportation
    • Everything
  • What has always worked will still likely work
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Adaptability and Flexibility
    • Hunting/Gathering/Growing
    • A solid conservative to risk balance
    • Saving
  • The basics of lifestyle design
    • Define the goals
    • Define the steps to get there honestly with yourself
    • Prioritize the steps
    • Begin taking action
  • If it is that simple, why don’t more people do it
    • It requires sacrifice
    • It requires honest with yourself
    • It requires taking responsibility for where you are
    • It requires the courage to do what most wont
  • Final thoughts;
