Episode-1880- Bob Brown with An Engineers Take on Automation

robots

Robert G (Bob) Brown has a bachelors degree in chemistry (SUNY Stony Brook) and a masters in computer science (New York Institute of Technology) but considers his pursuit of life long learning far more important than his formal education.

He started out teaching science but has been an embedded computer systems engineer for three decades. As an engineer he is listed as the inventor on several patents and has written over a dozen articles on computer and electronic topics.

He is a knowledgeable investor who has been expanding his investment strategies beyond just the financial for several years now. Born in the middle of the baby boom years, he is also focused on health and wellness so that he can keep pace with his two teenage children and remain an asset for them as he gets older.

This has lead him to study and practice permaculture, which is an ethics based design system for meeting human needs while caring for the planet.  He joins us today with an engineers perspective on how automation is changing the world.

Bug-A-Salt 2.0 Insect Eradication Gun – Item of the Day

saltgun

Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Bug-A-Salt 2.0 Insect Eradication Gun. I decided it was time for something that was just fun for an Item of the Day.  And this thing is fun.  Here is how it works, you put a bit of salt in it.  Not fancy kosher or sea salt, plain very fine table salt.  You cock it, and find a fly, flip off the safety and BAM!  Dead fly!

Range is about 2-3 feet for effective killing, which is pretty easy to get in range of on a fly.  Is this a practical tool?  In some ways yes it is.  You know when a fly is up in top of a window and you just can’t smack it in a recessed area, well now, BAM! Dead fly.

Or you know that one fly that torments you and you just can’t get a crack at him.  There ain’t no hunting regulation about baiting flies boy.  Put out a bit of scrap, hide by the fridge and when he comes BAM! Dead fly.

Okay but seriously it is just fun to blast the shit out of a fly with salt.  This thing is inherently safe fun as well.  About the only real injury it might cause if if you shot someone or yourself in the face so don’t do that.  Salt is not a aerodynamic substance so at about 4 feet it is pretty much done and done.  It only shots a tiny amount per shot.  What I am saying is you can set any responsible child or adult loose with it and not worry too much.

So check out the Bug-A-Salt 2.0 Insect Eradication Gun today and have some good, clean, salty fun.  And hey if you keep chickens, consider giving some lightly salted flies to them after your hunting trips.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.

Episode-1879- Remembering Bill Mollison

bill-mollison-fight

Today I am “calling and audible” and dedicating this show to Bill Mollison.  He is to date the greatest mentor I have that I have also never met.   Many are understandably sad at Bill’s passing, but I am less so.  In 2013 I spoke at length to his grandson and even that long ago the family knew Bill would not be here much longer.

His family had come to as peace with it as anyone contemplating the loss of a loved one can.  Bill is the reason I even know what Permaculture is, as its’ creator that is true of everyone, but for me it was this rough old man that made me see Permaculture as something beyond purple breathing hippy stuff.

Part of today’s episode is from Diego Footer’s Permaculture Voices Podcast where he reads a wonderful obituary for Bill, rather than redo that I thought I would just include it today.

This piece was actually written by Graham Bell, you can find the transcript here.

Greystone 11.5″ Non-Stick Griddle – TSP Item of the Day

griddleEvery day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend.

Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is the Greystone 11.5″ Non-Stick Griddle , after a few months of using my Greystone 13 inch frying pan I am hooked on this cookware.  Nothing sticks to it, you can cook hot as blazes if you want to, it wears like iron and you can use metal utensils.

Finding Greystone was a tag team affair. In Episode 1828 Chef Keith answered a cookware question and mentioned Italian Moneta cookware as a high quality non stick cook ware without the problems of things like Teflon. Looked good but was expensive enough for me to just use my old cast iron.

Then a listener named Camaron told me about this product called Greystone that was actually the exact same thing. Just basically a US Based brand of Moneta. So I check it out and it vetted 100% true. So I ordered my first pan. In a word it is amazing, it is everything those stupid infomercials promise about all the green this and copper that bullshit yet fail to deliver.

Durable as hell, non stick, oh wow is it! Looks good, light weight and just damn fine, but what do you expect from Italy when it comes to cooking. What Moneta did here is smart too.

They set up a US based brand, with the same product. They then ship tons of it at a time so they are doing all US based distribution. This of course creates US jobs even with a Italian made product and cuts the cost to the consumer by about 25% or more. Win, win, win.

I have now decided personally to add the Greystone 11.5″ Non-Stick Griddle because it will be better for some things than the frying pan, or because sometimes you are using two pans at one time.

This really is a great product. You know how you have to use those pathetic plastic utensils on most non stick, not this, metal is fine. Next there is this little logo on the handle right were it joins the pan, you can’t see it at first. When the pan is up to temp it turns green and shows up, this lets you keep turning down the heat to use the minimum amount to maintain a good cooking temp.

The pans heat up really fast, they hold temp quite well, it honestly made me love my gas stove even more than I already do.  Over time I plan to get rid of many of my pans and replace them with these.  I will still use cast iron for somethings, especially stuff that finishes in the over, as this stuff isn’t oven safe.  That is not due to the coating, but rather the handles.

If your frying pans have seen better days, check out the Greystone 11.5″ Non-Stick Griddle or the entire line up today.

Remember you can always find the TSP Amazon Item of the day by just going to TspAz.com and by shopping at TspAz.com anytime you shop on Amazon you help support TSP and the work we do here no matter what you buy.
