Two Quick Notes From Jack

Just a heads up that this week is an event week.  That means if you email me anything with more than two sentences and no lives depend on it it will likely end up in the deleted folder.  Sorry but that is just is how things are in an event week.

You can send show materiel and that will be filtered for follow up, you can send customer service and I will do my best to see to it but if you send me a request for doing discounts, some detailed proposal, etc. this just ain’t the week.  Please do try to be understanding.

Next Nick and I have been doing a lot of videos, 13 so far and one more uploading right now. In a bit I will be cooking sausage for the event and doing a q and a on all the questions posted to those videos thus far.  Again the play list is called, TSP Workshop Oct.

On the embedded video frame below up in the left upper corner you will see some lines, if you click those it will pull down a list of all the episodes published so far.  Again no notes or links with these vids folks, sorry we are just too busy to do more than publish them.

Sponsored Barter Blanket Items Received So Far

This event I am doing a program for small businesses to gain exposure on the barter blanket, if you want to know more see this post.

No Shows this Week but LOTS of VIDEO

Hey guys and gals this week we are getting ready for and conducting the TSP October Homestead Skills Workshop at Nine Mile Farm.  It is just way to hectic to do a show on a week like this but I will be uploading 5-10 or more videos a day all week.  The videos will be short, have NO NOTES at all, just a title like,

  1. TSP Workshops – Oct -#1
  2. TSP Workshops – Oct – #2
  3. And so on

These videos will be uploaded to a playlist called

TSP Workshop Oct

As of 11:05AM Central Time Monday there are two vidoes so far with a LOT MORE COMING

Episode-1650- Bill Wilson on Societal Maturity

Bill Wilson of Midwest Permaculture

Bill Wilson of Midwest Permaculture

Bill and his wife/partner Becky are co-founders of Midwest Permaculture. Now in their ninth year, Bill has become one of the respected permaculture teachers and designers in the U.S.. The goal of Midwest Permaculture is to see permaculture (in name or action) become a household term. Bill’s two adults sons are now involved in permaculture as well.

Bill joins us today to discuss among other things “The 4 Fires of Group Work”.
Often, people get together with dreams of starting a permaculture group, a community or a business only to be surprised and disappointed when it falls apart. They have failed to navigate the 4-fires.

With 35 years of small community living experience Bill has hard won insights into what it takes to work with others. When permaculture oriented projects fail it is rarely because of the the design piece — it’s almost always the people piece.

Episode-1649- Does Permaculture Lead to Anarchism

Permaculture-AnarchistWoh!  What is up with that title.  I know we have a lot of strong political views in Permaculture.  And of all stripes, liberals, conservatives and a lot of libertarians.  And many who have been in the movement a very long time are quite proud of what ever political stripe they have.

So does this question make sense?  I think that it does, and I think it leads many to start practicing anarchism without even knowing it or realizing it.

Understand there are two real types of anarchism at the individual level.  I call these philosophical and action based.  Strangely you’d think the philosophical would come easier but we all do the action based stuff in degrees.  Please understand these two definitions are no one’s but my own.

Philosophical Anarchism is the declaring of yourself to be an anarchist and then making choices about thoughts, issues and actions based on that.

Action Based Anarchism – is the ignoring or disobeying of authority so long as doing so does not violate the principle of non aggression.

For instance here are some action based anarchist things many of us have done or would do if certain circumstances occurred…

  • Dressing the way you want to vs. the way you are “supposed to”
  • Marrying who ever you choose instead of having an arranged marriage
  • Using an illegal substance, including a pain pill from your last prescription
  • Driving over the speed limit when no danger is present to another by doing so
  • Keeping 10 chickens when the code says you can only have four
  • Feeding homeless people even if the law says you can’t
  • Using violent force to stop one person from harming another.

Those are just a few examples.  To be clear on what is not anarchism here are some things people think are anarchist that are not.

  • Stealing your neighbors property.  This violates non aggression and is not anarchism.
  • Using violent force to harm another person because you simply don’t like them, again this violates non aggression.
  • Damaging property with vandalism, arson, etc.  Again this violates non aggression.

Join Me Today To Discuss…

  • Some of Permaculture’s biggest names and their views on anarchism
    • Bill Mollison – an anarchist that doesn’t know he is an anarchist
    • David Holmgren – a self declared anarchist
    • Geoff Lawton – teaches anarchism, though he would claim not to be an anarchist
    • Joe Salatin – a self proclaimed libertarian who practices anarchy
    • Toby Hemingway – a self described anarchist
    • Byron Joel – a self described anarchist
    • Ron Finely – no idea his politics but an anarchist in action
    • Paul Wheaton – not an anarchist but damn sure practices anarchy
    • Mark Sheppard – libertarian at a minimum, expert systems martial artist
  • Why Permaculture leads to anarchy
    • It leads to real solutions, often that are illegal but work
    • Ethics based and concerned with “people care”
    • Teaches the practice of currency creation and private banking
    • It is a design science which causes you to question everything
    • No room for bureaucracy, a tree doesn’t’ care about your title
    • A meritocracy in other words those that get shit done succeed
    • It is about rewilding humans to live with nature vs. opposing it
    • Promotes community interdependence vs system and centralized dependence
    • Focuses on real wealth above persevered wealth
    • Creates wealth that is hard if not impossible to tax
    • Leads naturally to commerce at a local level
    • Can not be controlled, policed, slowed down or stopped by the oligarchy
  • Final thoughts on what real freedom is and why morality is required for it

Episode-1646- Let’s Talk About Liberty

wolfI am getting an extremely late start today due to the new ducks arriving and a family emergency, so it is going to be a simple chat with Jack episode today.

Last night I listened to the republican debates, not really sure why, guess I felt I deserved some sort of punishment.  What I heard was mostly a bunch of people not actually answer any of the questions, say how great they were, explain why the other people sucked, and so on.

When issues were discussed I sat with dismay at how clearly none of these people seem to comprehend liberty, which of course is supposed to be the foundation of our nation.  Frankly these people seem to have a disdain for actual liberty.

What got me even more was this morning while driving to get the ducks and later supplies for them hearing people like Glenn Beck talk about “how good they sounded”, not all of them mind you but many of them.  Glenn the self proclaimed independent libertarian commending what many of these people said.

This got me thinking, does my nation even comprehend liberty at this point?  Sadly I don’t think by and large we do.  So let’s talk about that today.

Join Me Today to Discuss…

  • What exactly is liberty
  • What is the only valid purpose of law in a nation based on liberty
  • When two individuals have a difference of view, how is a resolution found in liberty
  • Why did we forget what freedom was all about
    • We started out with freedom for some
    • We became comfortable
    • We asked the State to preserve our comfort
    • The State was happy to do so
    • We now think freedom is forcing others to comply
  • How can we fight this, the ballot box is a fools errand and the rifle is a death sentence
    • 10,000 paper cuts
    • Teach others about liberty
    • Be a political atheist (at least in discussing issues)
    • Stick to principles, avoid people and polices
    • Find pain points, discuss them
    • Discuss how others feel about different issues
    • Walk away
  • The truth is, a person can only be free if they understand freedom, most don’t
