Episode-1371- All About Comfrey the Miracle Plant

Comfrey - A Proven Medicinal Herb, With a Undeserved Bad Reputation.

Comfrey – A Proven Medicinal Herb, With a Undeserved Bad Reputation.

Why do I call comfrey a miracle plant?  Well if I said their was one plant that could help heal broken bones, speed wound healing, heal skin ulcers that nothing else could close, provide fertilizer, provide mulch, feed livestock and be as easy to grow as breaking off a piece of a root and sticking it in the dirt, what would you call it?

Comfrey does all of these things and frankly more.  It also has a very undeserved bad reputation as being toxic if used internally.  In fact some over zealous nanny state types even caution against using it externally.  I am not really sure if the misinformation about comfrey is simply tea cup protectionism run a muck or an outright slander campaign.  And while I can’t advise you to use comfrey internally, because it is illegal for me to do so, what I will say is at times I do and I certainly am not dead or ill from doing so.

Even if you plan to never use comfrey internally it is still a plant every person should grow and be familiar with.  Its uses are too many to ignore and further it is so easy to grow and propagate there is no reason not to.

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • What exactly is comfrey
  • Why are we told comfrey is toxic
  • What is wrong with the research done to say it is toxic
  • What are the main comfrey types and what does Bocking mean?
  • How do you propagate comfrey
    • From seed (“wild comfrey” only)
    • From root cuttings, crowns, etc.
    • From tiny cuttings (make a lot fast)
    • Growing out cuttings in containers to multiply results fast
    • How I would propagate lots of roots fast if I wanted to
  • Uses for Comfrey
    • As fodder for cows, chickens, pigs, geese, etc. what you need to know
    • As fertilizer
      • Awesome NPK Ratio 1.8-0.5-5.3
      • A Dynamic Accumulator of Si, N, Mg, Ca, K & Fe
      • Making Liquid Fertilizer
      • Mulching
      • Leaf Boosting
    • For Medicinal Use
      • On wounds and ulcers
      • On bites and stings
      • On broken bones and sprains
      • On bruises
      • Internally (this is illegal)
      • Making oils and salves
  • Rules for successful comfrey patches
    • Keep it “clean, cut and fed”
    • Grass can and will choke out comfrey
    • You can graze it, best to do when you would have cut it
    • I prefer a distributed model but might do a propagation patch
  • Sources of Comfrey

Episode-1369- Fishing from Boats and Hiring Guides

Today I wanted to cover two subjects that I feel will fit easily into one show.  I want to start out actually with hiring guides because I think it is one of the best ways you can learn how to fish, learn specific bodies of water and learn to effectively fish from boats.

I then want to turn to fishing from boats on your own.  I want to cover some old school gear and some latest cutting edge stuff as well.  I want to tell you why I personally prefer a center console boat style to most “bass boats” if you really want a versatile fishing boat.

I want to talk about depth finders a bit along with effective use of a GPS system and why they are so valuable.  I will talk some about creating “chum holes”, bit about trolling and the “hell pet” technique and some other stuff I have learned over the years.

Join Me Today as I Discuss…

  • How to find a good guide
  • How to talk to a guide to get the most out of him
  • Why you should always tip your guide
  • Why boats are one thing I don’t often like to buy used but I still will
  • The most common fresh water fishing boats
    • First what do What does SC, T, WT and CC mean
    • Flat Bottom and V-Hull “jon boats”
    • The typical “bass boat”
    • The “all around” V-Hull
    • The Center Console
    • Deck and Pontoon Boats
  • Anchoring isn’t a good idea at times  here is why
  • Trolling motors, all the main options
    • Hand tiller
    • Foot control
    • Remote control
    • Automated with GPS – Coolest thing since sliced bread
  • Things you learn the hard way when you own a boat
    • Don’t forget to pull up the anchor
    • You are going to hit stuff
    • Everyone wants to fish with you, few want to help run your boat
    • Putting boats in and out is a pain in the ass
    • Coming home in the dark is a pain in the ass
    • Things always break at the worst possible time
    • Your trolling motor wants to eat your line
    • Lines at ramps get long
    • Tree branches in your face hurt
    • Get two bilge pumps
    • When it rains or the wind gets bad, go the hell home

New Video Series of the TSP Homestead – Summer 2014 Updates

There will be about 5 more videos at least coming in this series in the next week, here is what we have so far.

Homestead Update 1

This video gives an update on the new geese, the sheet mulched small food forest, the rapid growth of sunflowers for support species, currants growing in Texas, “designer” Autumn Olives (Ruby and Amber), the results of a heavy apple pruning, Buddy and the ducks and what geese do to comfrey

Homestead Update 2

In part two we show you are set up for brooding out our baby ducks and introduce you to our 22 new baby ducks.  I talk a little bit about upgrading our feeders and using dog kennels for housing young fowl.  I also show you how even with small birds and flocks we are able to run a leader follower grazing system.

Homestead Update 3

In this video meet the new flock of 60 plus chicks being added to our homestead this year.  Again you will see our use of dog kennels for housing which is very simple and effective for young birds.  Our make shift shade using USGI shelter halfs.  I also show our new hybrid chicks which are a cross of Egyptian Fayoumi Hens and a Rhode Island Red Rooster.

For the chicken we are using 8 foot hog panels with nylon fencing tie wrapped to each panel to keep the small birds in.  I also talk about reusable zip ties, I think these belong on every homestead.

Homestead Update 4

In this video I show you the progress on the Urban Food Forest we are developing as a teaching tool at the TSP homestead and introduce you to a ton of unique plantings like

  • Azarole
  • Shipova

I also show you how we use the shaded area to pot up pants and get them ready to harden off.

Today’s Show was Well Screwed Up – It is Now Fixed

Today’s had a total screw up in post production.  Some how the part after Joe was on to discuss PermaEthos was from a previous show done about a week ago.

The new show is now attached to the post for episode 1368 as it should be.  If you downloaded the mess up version, just delete and redownload it and you should get the correct one for today’s show.

If you look at the actual file name when you download it the new one that has been corrected will be

epi-1368-feedback-6-16-14-fixed.mp3

If you don’t see the “fixed” part in the file you have to old messed up one.
