Episode-1196- Updates on Future TSP Endeavors and Homestead Plans

A Lot Has Changed Since We Moved From Arkansas.

A Lot Has Changed Since We Moved From Arkansas.

Time for a good old fashioned chat with Jack style show today.  I am going to provide some more thoughts on the concept of an eco centric libertarian community.  I even have a name for it, PermaEthos, I’ll tell you about the name today.

I will also tell you about some projects I and Josiah have planned on the TSP homestead and some successes and failure thus far for the year.  Additionally I want to lay out a true vision for where TSP is headed.  Some things have become a lot more clear to me lately about the untapped potential of the TSP brand and community.

Join me Today as we Discuss…

  • More on the potential PermaEthos Community (I don’t have all the answers yet)
  • Progress on the aquaponics system that is turning more toward a aquaculture system
  • Planned workshops, what we are leaning and how that relates to PermaEthos
  • Report thus far on the Freedom Ranger Chickens
  • Our need for a livestock guardian dog, making peace with the wife on an “outside dog”
  • Our biggest weakness, water, and what I plan to do about it
  • The true power of the TSP community and what it could lead to

Episode-1195- Ben Falk on The Resilient Farm and Homestead

Ben Falk of WholeSystemsDesign.com

Ben Falk of WholeSystemsDesign.com

Ben developed Whole Systems Design, LLC as a land-based response to biological and cultural extinction and the increasing separation between people and elemental things.

Life as a designer, builder, ecologist, tree-tender, and backcountry traveler continually informs Ben’s integrative approach to developing landscapes and buildings. His home landscape and the WSD studio site in Vermont’s Mad River Valley serve as a proving ground for the regenerative land developments featured in the projects of Whole Systems Design.

Ben has studied architecture and landscape architecture at the graduate level and holds a master’s degree in land-use planning and design. He has conducted nearly 200 site development consultations across New England and facilitated dozens of courses on permaculture design, property selection, microclimate design, and design for climate change.

Today he joins us to discuss his new book “The Resilient Farm and Homestead” along with subjects like  wood heat, property evaluation, integrating grazing animals with perennials, permaculture design course, drought and flood proofing, cold climate strategies, ponds and swales.

Episode-1192- Mike Haigwood on Mix Species Grass Based Dairy

A Happy and Healthy Jersey Cow at the P.A. Bowman Farmstead

A Happy and Healthy Jersey Cow at the P.A. Bowman Farmstead

Mike Haigwood is currently the manager of  the P.A. Bowen Farmstead a mixed species dairy operation run by Sally Fallon.  Sally Fallon (who will be on TSP next week)  is the co-founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation along with nutritionist Mary G. Enig

Mike grew up in rural Iowa three generations removed from Agriculture. He had an average childhood but always loved the outdoors.  Fast forward, he graduated 1986, tried college but didn’t like it, quit after one semester then started working.

Mike then got a chance to work for a guy who started his own traditional lawn care business as a partner in the company, while short lived it started him down a new path.

Mike then started school at Penn State University in 1990, got married and had a son and then graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor in Horticulture. He then moved to Mosurris working in the Kansas City area as a Landscape Designer for a Garden Center Chain.

With the birth of his daugher and new concerns for nutrition his awakening began.  So in 1995 they moved back to Iowa started their own businesses lawn care, garden produce but ended up closing the business in 97.  In this short time Mike learned a lot about marketing, or the lack of it!

At this point he started homesteading, homeschooling, and following the practices in the book Nourishing Traditions (by Sally Fallon) and began interning in the world of agriculture.  In time that led to “bootlegging raw milk” from their own farm.  While successful they grew tired of the dogma around conventioinal agriculture still present in the Midwest.

So in 2009 they decided to move east and pursue alternative farming practices. He and his wife (Barb) met Sally Fallon at a conference in 2010 and asked if she knew anyone that could use a management team for their farm.  Her response was, “send me your resume” and now today the whole family is working on Sally’s Farm P.A. Bowen Farmstead.
