Episode-1080- Glen Tate on Book 5 of the 299 Days Series

Book 4 in the 299 Days Series

Book 4 in the 299 Days Series

Glen Tate is the author of the ten-book prepper novel series “299 Days” published by Prepper Press.

The books describe an average guy who prepares for, and lives through, a partial collapse of the United States.

Glen joins us today to discuss a bit of the plot line for book five in the 299 Days book series.

Today we discuss how and ongoing collapse will play out, how it will both divide and unite citizens and human nature during the worst of times.  We also discuss the problems creating the collapse at their core, some solutions, and why some components of the “union” may ball apart.

Glen is a moderator on the TSP forum under the name “Heavy G.” He lives and works in Olympia, Washington where he has a front row seat to the corruption in government. Much like the main character in the series, the author is a forty-something resident of the capitol of Washington State, Olympia, and is a very active prepper. He grew up in the remote logging town of Forks, Washington.

“Glen” keeps his identity a secret so he won’t lose his job because, in his line of work, being a prepper and questioning the motives of government is not appreciated.

The story line of 299 Days is as follows,

In it, the main character, Grant Matson, has a job that allows him to see what’s wrong with government. He realizes he needs to prepare for what’s coming and he does so. His wife, Lisa, is reluctant to prepare because she thinks things are just fine. When the civil unrest and political collapse hit in a dramatic way, it is undeniable that they need to leave their Olympia, Washington home and head to their cabin. But, Lisa is still reluctant; she desperately wants things to remain “normal.”

Out at the cabin, a collection of amazing–yet real–people assemble. They create their own community because the government isn’t functioning in their area. They have to work together and, as a community, they manage to achieve some impressive results. Unlike most prepper stories, in 299 Days America suffers a partial collapse. The utilities stay one (due to a spell-binding plot twist) and the government functions in larger cities. People in rural areas still get some food and services from the government, but must increasingly rely on themselves. There are no zombies or cannibalism; 299 Days describes a much more likely partial collapse scenario.

Grant’s friends, who work in government, describe how things continue to go down hill in the city and how the government is trying to maintain control. They describe exactly why the government, as big and powerful as it once was, cannot control things. Many in the military and law enforcement step in to stop the bad things; others in the military and law enforcement perpetuate the bad things.

After a while out at the cabin, some important visitors arrive and present Grant with a difficult choice. Eventually, the Patriots–the side Grant is on–are forced to take on what’s left of the former government. There is a huge battle. In the end, Grant has an important job at the beginning of the rebuilding.

Episode-1079- Jim Navarro on Hackerspaces and Makerspaces

Jim Navarro is a founder and Director of the board of Bridgewire Makerspace in Reno/Sparks NV.   His group is a community workshop that is member driven and is a non profit.  They have been around for 18 months and are growing daily.

He joins us to explain the fundamental of the process they used in setting up their workshop and the hurdles along the way.  Plus how they run it during day to day ongoing operations.

Professionally Jim is the Director of Security for one of the Forbes 400 and an NFA consultant and Armorer for a title 2 manufacturer in Reno.  Which Jim calls his “fun hobby job”.

Today we discuss how to start a makerspace/hackerspace/community workshop.   The hurdles the problems and the positive results.   Then after how to run them and handle problems including why anyone should do this in the first place.

We also discuss the entrepreneual spirit within the Makerspace community and how combined with systems like Kickstarter it is chaining the playing field for small businesses in America today.  Why be in hock to a venture capitalists (I call them vulture capitalists) when you can be privately funded by people that support your mission?  Why spend a fortune on prototyping when you can join a community, spend a few hundred dollars on some classes and dues and produce it yourself?  Heck why spend a fortune in bank loans for initial production equipment when you can ramp up using community based equipment?

Today on The Survival Podcast we discuss, voting with our feet, a great greenhouse, silver and gold, state sovereignty, nullification  and more.

Yes this is the type of show generally reserved for a Monday but at times the pure volume of listener questions and comments makes me feel compelled to do an extra feedback show.  Today we have some amazing content and a very cool announcement.

Make sure if you submit content for a feedback show that you put something like “comment for jack”, “question for jack” or “article for jack” in the subject line to assure proper identification for my screening process.

Please understand I receive several hundred emails a day and can’t get them all on the air.  I do generally at least skim 100% of emails sent in this format.  If the question is simple I often answer it directly, though this can’t always be done.

I also do put out a lot of information on Facebook from emails that I can’t fit on the program though so keep em coming.

A Letter from a Military Vet, To the State of NY

The following is a letter that was sent by William Kone a 1st Sergeant currently serving in the US Army Reserves.  1st Sergeant Kone is a good friend of the TSP community and a member of the team putting together our disaster response team, which will help fellow citizens in time of disaster.  When I received his letter I was proud to have him as a friend.  Please share this letter with friends and family and if you know anyone in the media pass it along to them as well.

I have said for years that freedom of movement among the member states is one of the most important components of a free republic.  We can vote in many ways in such a republic.  We vote with our dollars by dealing with companies who support our values.  We vote in the ballot box to elect our leaders.  However, in a multi-state republic, like the United States of America, the most powerful vote we can often cast is with our feet.  1st Sergeant Kone’s letter is a perfect example of just that.

————————-

An Open letter to the Citizens of New York and its government;

I am William V Kone, the seventh generation to be born in Tompkins County New York.  Because of Military Service, I have not lived in New York for over half my life.  In that time I kept my residency in New York because I always planed on returning when I retired.  I have now given up that hope and my residency.

It only seems fair to give the reason for this decision to sever ties with a State that my family has been an active part of since 1794.  The final act by the government of New York that has caused this is the recent passing of yet another anti-firearm law.  That is the last straw.

For years I let NYS tax my income, paid the high fees to register and inspect my cars, paid high property taxes, struggled though excessive regulations, and begged for permission to own a firearm even though it is a right listed in the Constitution I have sworn to protect and defend.

But no more.  The recent oppressive law will not allow me to bring home my firearms, will make me a felon for a “violent” crime of having empty magazines (a “crime” that only exists in 5 other states), prohibit me from ever giving my firearms to my daughters, restrict my ability to protect my family, and make it a crime to have more than 7 bullets for my daughters to protect themselves with.

That was too much. On top of all the other issues, the high taxes on income, the high sales taxes, high property taxes, excessive rules on land use, restrictions on building homes, large number of fees and fines, high crime rates, the high cost of living, and low quality of roads and services this law and the new ones being proposed to take away all semi-auto rifles is too much.

Some of you are saying “good riddance, we don’t need your type here anyways”. I’m sorry you feel that way, New York is losing a stable family that is highly educated, hard working, has a history of public service.  No more will I pay taxes to NYS, sales, income or any fees.  I won’t be setting up a business after I retire in New York.  My kids are not likely to go to college in NYS or get jobs here.

New York is losing a firefighter/Paramedic, Emergency Manager, and military vet in me, and an Industrial Engineer and Minister in my spouse. We won’t be building our dream home that generates property tax, we wont be earning income in New York to be taxed on, we won’t be paying the high cost of living that generates sales taxes.

We will be retiring to some place that respects our Constitutional listed rights, that does not treat us as sources of funding for others, that provides good service for the taxes they do collect, and is more responsive to the voters. (and able to budget with out massive debt servicing).  We are looking at Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and New Hampshire.

We will still visit, just not as often, or need to as more of the family moves out of state.  I would urge others to look at how the state treats you, and consider moving.  If you do, write the Governor and state officials, let them know why and what the state is losing when you do.

To the Citizens of New York, We live in a Republic, we don’t have to stay where we are not wanted or are treated badly.  Other states are excited to have firearm owners who will work hard and are good neighbors.

To the government of New York, repealing this recent bad law won’t get me to return.  The state needs to make fundamental changes. It can’t keep treating working citizens as piggy banks to be taxed, fee’ed and fined at will to fund inefficient unneeded programs.  It shouldn’t and can’t keep restricting the basic rights of the Citizens of New York.  You don’t own us, we will leave.

William V Kone, BSc, NREMT-P, currently serving in US Military in a unit in Wheeling WV.  Former tax payer and resident of the Town of Caroline, Tompkins county.

cc: Governor Cuomo; LT Gov. Duffy; Comptroller DiNapoli; AG Schneiderman; Sectary Perales; State Sen. Seward (51st); Assembly-Woman Lifton (125th); Mayor Myrick (City of Ithaca); Supervisor Barber (Town of Caroline)

——————————-

1st Sgt Kone, I want to thank you personally for your continued service to our nation and for the courage to continue to serve the republic by taking a stand on this issue.  To leave a state one’s family has resided in for over 120 years is a difficult thing to do.  You have my thanks, my respect and my support.

There are times when men a pushed to far, states like New York, California and Illinois seem to be doing this at an alarming rate lately.   My statement to those running such states is as follows.  As you continue to tax and oppress your citizens all while not even being able to balance your own check books do not be surprised as your best citizens and most productive businesses exercise their ultimate vote as citizens of the republic.

Yes at some point they will grow tired of being ignored, watching their money wasted, watching you destroy the economy of their states and continuing to interfere in their lives.  They will not however just grow weary and stop fighting, they will do much worse then that.

They will simply leave and leave you with the least productive members of your states.  They will leave you with the ones who profit from the taxes paid by producers.  They will leave you with those who are easily led.  They will leave you with those citizens that will blindly accept your oppression.  Eventually this will accelerate the path toward bankruptcy your states are already on.

Power Point Deck from My Bug Out Bag Presentation

Many of the people at liberty forum in NH asked for a copy of my presentation on Bug Out Bags, so I am posting it for all here.  You can get a copy by using this link.

Now we are off to Manchester Airport in the middle of a snow storm to be lied to about our flight that is  according to Delta still “on time”, I won’t believe it until the plane takes off and I am not optimistic about that happening anywhere near close to “on time”.

Assuming we get home today, TSP will return to our regular broadcasts tomorrow.

Episode-1075- Jim Phillips on Cold Weather Survival

Jim Phillips Joins us to Discuss Cold Weather Survival.

Jim Phillips Joins us to Discuss Cold Weather Survival.

Jim Phillips is a nationally known speaker and teacher who has professionally taught thousands of classes all across the United States for 40 years.

For a number of years prior to this career, his hobby was teaching cold weather safety & survival.

Jim is a strong advocate of self-reliant living and family preparedness.  He developed an entire preparedness curriculum by asking himself the question “What if?” and then setting out to discover what actually does and does not work.

The answers he seeks (and then teaches) must be based on true principles derived from firsthand experience.  Above all else, Jim believes that attitude and practical knowledge are more critical to survival than having a bunch of “stuff.”

He is known for saying…

“Who you are and what you know are far more
important than what you have.”

He encourages his students to develop a powerful positive purpose and mission to focus on in order to carry them through the serious challenges of life.  He was also referred to me by expert council member and friend of TSP Steven Harris.

Join Us Today As We Discuss…

  • Why cold weather survival requires more then coats and typical cold weather clothing
  • Why layering can actually be a bad idea in spite of conventional wisdom
  • Why Jim is not a fan of wool again contrary to conventional wisdom
  • Jim’s “cold weather doctrine system”
  • How people can survive at sub zero temps with no shelter or heating
  • Can waterproofing kill you in the cold
  • Why so called water proof  and breathable clothing is in Jim’s view a myth
  • Jim’s unique approach to cold weather survival in summary

In Defense of Liberty 2013

Come See Me at Liberty Forum 2013

As most of you know I am huge supporter of the work the Free State Project is doing.  I do what I can to help them including providing them with a free sponsorship spot on TSP and speaking at their annual Liberty Forum.

Well we are off to do that as of now.  I will be out of the loop checking emails only about once a day between now and Monday.  During that time email responses will be delayed.  This is also not a good time to send me any sort of detailed proposals, if you have something like that waiting to send it until say Tuesday will give you a better shot at getting it examined.

There will be shows on Wednesday and Thursday this week but no show on Friday.  Tomorrow’s guest is going to provide hours of additional free video content if you get bored while I am away.  His name is Jim Phillips and he was referred by Steven Harris.  His show on cold weather survival may change forever the way you view winter weather.

I will do my best to keep up with all customer service issues but please forgive any delays that occur during the rest of this week.

I want to let you guys know that the good folks at the Free State Project have upgraded me to Key Note Speaker for Friday night an honor I share this year with Tom Woods who has the keynote spot on Saturday night.

Previous keynote speakers at Liberty Forum include people like Peter Schiff, Joel Salatin, Naomi Wolf , John Stossel and Ron Paul, hence I am extremely humbled by this honor.  I will do my very best to make this community proud as I take on this role.

I might be the first person ever to fulfill this role in a T-Shirt and jeans but I vow to make it one of the most impacting speeches ever given at Liberty Forum.  If you are in attendance I vow to literally make you feel liberty boiling in your blood.

Remember a fight for liberty anywhere is a fight for liberty everywhere.  I am off to lend my support and my voice to one such fight, until I return may your own fight for personal liberty be advanced daily.

Episode-1074- Contour Gardening and Woody Beds

As many of you know I have suggested that we call what most (not all) people are doing in America woody beds vs hugulkultur.  I suggest this for two reasons.

1.  People who don’t know about it already understand “woody bed” but look at you like you have a snake crawling out of your ear when you say hugulkultur.

2.  It is more accurate, hugul in the term hugulkultur pretty much means high as in high bed.  As in 1.5-2 yards high.  This is simply not what we are doing in America in most instances.

Since first learning about the entire concept from Paul Wheaton (as practiced by Sepp Holzer) I have worked with it in many different formats, from 6 foot high true huguls to in ground versions that appear like any typical framed in raised bed.  I have also studied the work of Permaculture visionary Geoff Lawton and become a huge fan of his swale based design systems.

As I continued both studying the work of others and putting it into actual field level work (I can’t stress how important that is) I have also learned how Geoff takes “swale like design” into raised bed gardening.   I have now found that taking the disciplines of swale style raised beds and adding wood core design to the mix is an incredibly efficient design structure.

Today I discuss the primary design structures of this type of system, why they work and what limitations each has.  From there we can see how a proper integration of all of them makes up a great deal for where each has certain weaknesses.

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • What is a swale and why does it work
  • What is the difference between a “swale like” structure and a true swale
  • How can contour paths act like swales when they are not below grade
  • Does it make sense to cut paths below grade (may be, it depends)
  • What is traditional hugulkultur
  • Why did Sepp Holzer and other actually bury wood in the first place
  • The limits of a “spongy core” based on mathematics as a simply reservior
  • What are mycelium and what role do they play in permaculture
  • How does the internal composting action protect roots in cold weather
  • Why isn’t the heat a danger in hot weather
  • Why deep mulching is a must
  • How you can practice polyculture, clumpy polyculture or even row mono culture
  • How does a contour based wood core system function end to end
  • Info on the upcoming workshop that will teach these techniques
