13Skills.com is Live

After a really awesome job by our programmer David 13Skills.com is now up and live.  This site is designed to help Americans reclaim knowledge and skills.  The idea is to set a goal to gain or improve 13 skills in 2013, hence the 13 in 13 skills challenge.

I originally announced the project here on the blog with this post.  The new site is located at 13skills.com and it is up and ready for you to set up your profile and add skills and goals.  We have to keep spammers out so you will have to be approved by one of our moderators before your profile goes public, please give us a bit of time in getting this done early on.

Also this site is a BETA site meaning we are about to put real world activity on it for the first time.  If there are glitches and bugs please understand that we will work to correct them as soon as possible.  Use the contact page on the site to report them, don’t email me directly.  That way Dorothy and our programmer will both be notified.   In any event if you have been waiting get on over to 13Skills.com and sign up today.

MSB Lifetime Membership Closing

Last Monday I announced a MSB Life Time Membership opportunity and asked if there would be any interest.  We got a pretty good response and so rolled it out and started accepting lifetime members.

I ran the program for about a week and a half and the response has been just awesome.  We met our funding goals and are closing down the program today.  I don’t know if or when we will run it again.  So I am making the post to announce that the opportunity will close at 12 midnight today.

The cost is to be 300 dollars and will provide you with lifetime membership in the MSB.  No dues ever again. YOU DO NOT have to pay today but you must either request an invoice or how to pay by mail today.  If you pay within 30 days we will set you up, after that we will have to return your money and fully close it down.

There are some things you need to know about this if you want to become a lifetime member.

1.   All of these will have to be manual and PayPal gets their panties a wad over the term “lifetime membership” so if you want to pay with PayPal that is great but we will need to invoice you for it directly, instructions on how to join are below PLEASE follow them.

2.  There will be no discounts on this nor will we be applying prior membership payments to the lifetime membership.  With one exception if your current membership renewed in the last 60 days I will credit it to your lifetime membership if you request it.  Again the cost is 300 dollars one time with no dues or fees ever again.

How to Apply for Lifetime Membership – PLEASE READ FULLY

1.  DO NOT just send money at this time, send me an email at jack @ thesurvivalpodcast.com with “MSB Lifetime” in the subject telling me you want to join and how you prefer to pay.  Follow the format at the end of this blog post when you do.

2.  If you want to pay by PayPal we need your PayPal email address so we can send you an invoice, please note the invoice will call the Membership “Individual Premium Sponsorship of The Survival Podcast”, again PayPal gets in a wad over the term lifetime membership.  Once you pay the invoice we will convert your membership to lifetime status.

3.  If you want to pay by mail you will receive instructions for how to do so in response to your email.

4.  If you are an existing member, we need your MSB Username, for two reasons.  First to set up your membership with your existing account or your own convenience.  Second to make sure we cancel your auto renewal if you pay via PayPal.  I don’t want lifetime members charged for their subscription ever again, that defeats the entire point.

Please use the following format when you email me about the lifetime membership

Subject MSB Lifetime
Existing MSB Member –  Yes or No
MSB Username – if you are a current member
Preferred Payment Method – PayPal or By Mail (Check/Cash/Money Order)
PayPal Email Address – If you want to pay by PayPal

Episode-1030- The Hands Off Self Sufficient BOL

One thing many continue to ask me about is how to have land that is productive even if seldom managed.   The true dyed in the wool, off grid BOL.  As you might imagine Permaculture is part of the answer.

The key with land like this is it must be able to provide many of your needs but do so in a way that looks very natural.  Anyone passing near it must see it as mostly just scrub and woods like everything else around it.

The good news is the best land to do something like this with is often the cheapest land you can buy.  Generally you find “problems” that others don’t want to deal with and either you don’t care about these problems or you have a creative solution to them.  What I will lay out today is an almost perfect system and piece of land.  Odds our neither you or I will ever get anything up to this level of perfection.  We look at it only so that we can figure out how to get as close as possible based on our resources, our budgets and our region.

Join Me Today As I Discuss…

  • Why you would want to have a BOL like this in the first place
  • Shopping for land and thoughts on owner financing
  • Four big must haves for others and why you don’t want them (may be)
    • Electric Grid Access
    • Telephone Service
    • Grid water or easy well installation
    • Serviced road frontage
  • What land like this really needs to have
    • Guaranteed right of access
    • Surface water or the ability to create it
    • Decent soil
    • Trees and other on site resources
    • Reasonable terrain
    • Good solar access
    • Minimal regulations and no restrictions
    • Wildlife
  • The Perfect Piece of Land
    • River or stream on it
    • Natural spring on it
    • At least the perimeter is heavily treed
    • Native plants that are edible
    • Good population of wild game
    • Large the larger the better think 10 acres minimum, 50 is ideal
  • Some ideas for setting things up
    • Swales and ponds then more swales and ponds
    • Plant food forests and do so heavily
    • Set up some sort of hard building with a metal roof
    • Set up at minimum 2500 gallons of water catchment (potable)
    • Use coppicing and pollarding to harvest wood
    • Set up earth walled structures
    • Put in an underground structure if at all possible
    • Store as little as possible on site, hide the hell out of what you do
    • Set up high capacity wild life feeders (including for fish)
    • Build functional things that can’t be removed or easily vandalized
    • Create an “earth fence” and plant it with the nastiest stuff you can find
    • Have one way in, one apparent way out and many actual ways out
    • Use a compound approach
    • Consider “tiny houses” on tailors

Episode-1028- Technologies, Products and Ideas for a Transitional Society

For Acorns to be a Food, First a Market Must be Created

For Acorns to be a Food, First a Market Must be Created

There are a lot of things wrong with modern business, finance, agriculture and manufacturing.  Many of us understand the current system is far from sustainable but we also know for now it is all we have.  Today I will discuss some business and product ideas that are just bouncing around in my head.

Some of these are honestly very easy to do, others may require a lot more work then I imagine but most of them do have a potential to change things for the better long term.

Like most ideas though, they are pretty much worthless unless someone make them happen.  Some of what you will hear today isn’t new at all, in fact some if it is how we can take old ideas and actually make them work.

Join Us Today As We Discuss…

  • First you have to understand how a market is “created”
  • Second you must understand human nature is to be lazy
  • Third you must understand that people naturally resist change
  • Ideas for Transitional Products and Businesses
    • Stop taking about acorns and make them edible in mass quantity
    • Develop small scale affordable hullers and presses
    • Make methane biogas but do so for others on their own sites
    • Develop a pond based back yard aquaponics system
    • Cheap modular (snap together) aquaponics systems
    • Building electric motorcycles
    • Building battery back up systems

Episode-1026- Building Resiliency in our Children

Trey Gibson of The Family Podcast Network

Trey Gibson of The Family Podcast Network

Many of our children and in fact I personally say young adults up to about the age of 40 have become part of what is being called the “tea cup generation”.  A group that has lost the ability to solve their own problems or deal with adversity or loosing or just about anything part of normal everyday life that doesn’t go perfect.

The could be no better example of this then my recent coverage of the 100K Foot Bridge Parents want so their kids can cross a 2 foot wide, 4 inch deep concrete ditch.  If you haven’t see this yet please watch it and note the real tragedy is that, the kids are not the ones with a problem, they cross the ditch without any problems, the parents are the ones who are making a big deal out of this.

To me the problem is escalating and become far more pronounced.  I personally think we should call the past generation tea cups and the one they are now parenting the “delicate little flower generation”, all this only a few generations separated from “the greatest generation”?  On that note I have invited Trey Gibson of The Family Podcast Network on to discuss building resilience in our children.

Trey Gibson has a Masters degree in counseling psychology and 6 years in helping parents de-stress parenting.  Trey has four of his own kids and has been married to his wife Corrie for the last 8 years.

After realizing his passion of showing parents how to take much of the stress out of parenting he launched his own website and podcast called The Family Podcast Network.  There he has dedicated his time to building parents up and showing them how to better raise healthy and strong kids…while not wanting to pull their hair out.

He has also launched The Family Podcast Networks sister station, The Marriage Podcast where he and his wife discuss the keys to find and keep passion and fun in your marriage. He joins us today to discuss rebuilding resiliency in our children so that they are prepared for good times or bad.
