Episode-694- Listener Feedback for 6-29-11

Well folks I finally made good on the threat and doubled up on some listener feedback this week. The feedback folder is BURSTING from all your stuff so I went into it twice because I don’t like leaving so many emails unanswered.  If you want your comment, news story or question on a show like today’s email it to jack@thesurvivalpodcast.com

Note – At the end of today’s show I discuss an article on James Rawles’ blog SurvivalBlog.com, during that time I talk about a lot of the sensationalism and nonsense in our industry today.  I want to be clear these comments are not directly about Mr. Rawles whose work I over all respect a great deal.

Join me today as we discuss…

  • Two jokes to change the pace a little bit
  • Two new resources for saving money
  • Making a decision on investing in solar energy
  • Farmland is hot as an investment, my thoughts on this
  • Debt is good for your self esteem, really?
  • Did cavemen practice genetic modification of seeds
  • Tennessee pass a stupid law about posting pictures online
  • Are the city defaults about to begin, yes, yes they are
  • Should we feel hopeless or hopeful as a modern survivalist
  • Thoughts on the new show, “Doomsday Preppers”

Episode-693- Creative Gardening Solutions for Transitional or Harsh Environments

A quick bag garden combined with a natural trellis.

Gardening and permaculture are key topics with me when it comes to modern survival living.  Some question this concept and feel survivalism is far more about beans, bullets and bandaids than compost, a shovel and turning soil.

To such types I have one question, where do you think the beans come from?

I have said a few things before that I feel need to be reinforced today.

  1. You can only store so much food
  2. You may fight a real battle a handful of times in your life or never but you must eat daily
  3. Our current food supply is threatened
  4. Our food supply is now heavily effected by inflation
  5. Being self sufficient means you must feed yourself

This is all well and good but at times we find ourselves in transitional periods or dealing with harsh environments.  While I believe that permaculture can in fact terraform the desert (because it has, see Greening the Desert for an example) such terraforming takes time and resources.  Something you may not have or have in sufficient amounts to feed yourself this season.   Today I present to you some options that can get you up and producing quickly during just about any season of the year.

The purpose of today’s show is to help you get production will making major improvements to the land itself or even use the transitional method to improve the land long term.

Join me today as we discuss…

  • The bag garden
    • For quick production
    • For creating a permanent “fence garden”
    • Fore creation of conventional raised beds
  • The self watering bucket and rain gutter garden
    • Self maintaining
    • Used easy to find materials
    • Presents unlimited configurations
    • Can be permanent
    • Takes care of itself while you improve your land
  • The Straw Bale Garden
    • Can be up and running in a few weeks with no digging
    • Can be a permanent or transitional
    • Is very water efficient
  • Rock Garden Hugelkultur
    • Fast permanent structure
    • Requires no digging
    • Looks great
    • Perfect for herbs
    • Uses abundant/cheap/free  materials

Episode-690- Not the End but a Massive Shift of the World as we Know It

One of the favorite topics on prepper forums and in doomer literature is TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it).  I think what many fail to focus on with this is the (as we know it) portion.  The fact is the world as people of their time knew it has ended many times, it will continue to end.

At one time a Roman citizen was the most advantaged in the world, so also there was a time when it was a great to be a Greek, an Aztec or a member of the Hopi Tribe.  None of these civilizations really “ended” they shifted and adapted, the decedents are here with us.  In the case of the Greeks they are now on the verge of bankruptcy but we still have Greece.  The Aztecs may be gone but their descendants are part of the blood of Mexican and Latin American citizens today as are many of their customs.

Shifts are strange, at times they benefit us, sometimes they harm us and sometimes they can all but destroy us.  Some our subtle and some are massive and even tiny shifts can cause massive change over time.  The only constant in shifts it they ALWAYS occur, they never stop and we will always have to deal with them.

Today’s show covers a few such shifts but mainly focuses on being prepared for them, no matter what form they may take.

Join me today to discuss…

  • A special farewell to my friend and brother Ron Hood
  • Why shifts must occur
  • Some current economic shifts
  • Some current cultural shifts
  • Some current climate shifts
  • Lessons from history
  • The truth about our economic future
  • How shifts don’t have to be bad but are for most people
  • Preparedness is really about needs first, wants second and luxury third

Site Remodeling Going On

There is a bug in our primary site theme, this bug is setting off an alert for some users of Internet Explorer, the alert says the site may be unsafe.  While this is in fact false and there is no threat to anyone on the TSP server it is certainly bad for business.

Rather than continue to deal with concerns and perhaps give TSP a bad reputation with new visitors I have simply disabled the old theme.

Rest assured this is not our new look an feel just a get by so I can get on with recording today’s show.

So please don’t be alarmed that the site looks different, the podcast is still available and a show for today is on the way.

Episode-689- Dr. Kyle Christensen on Herbal and Alternative Remedies

Join me today as I welcome Dr. Kyle Christensen who is one of the people behind our sponsor Western Botanicals.  Kyle is a Doctor of Chriopractic (D.C.), a Master Herbalist (M.H.) and a Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.).

Today we will be discussing treating common and acute problems with herbal and natural remedies.  We will also discuss abuses in modern medicine and by the FDA along with our individual responsibilities to care for ourselves and demand more from our conventional doctors.

Dr. Christensen created Western Botanicals with a sincere desire to establish “an herbalist in every home”.   Western Botanicals assist’s people in this effort through the workshops, herbal formulas and remedies they manufacture and the Herb Kits.

Self-reliance and interdependence is the goal at Western Botanicals which is why I so enjoy the opportunity to share this interview with the audience.
