Episode-672- Embracing Technology as a Modern Survivalist

Technology gets a bad rap with some preppers but I find it amusing that they voice their displeasure in places like an internet forum.  To do so they are using electricity, a computer and an internet connection.  I have asked more than one such person if they ride a hose to work each day or drive a car, that usually makes a solid point strait away.

Also please consider that things like bow drill fires, the sun compass, the spear, the atlatl and dead fall traps were at one time, “cutting edge technology”.  So today we discuss some of my favorite technology resources and how I use them as part of my planning, prepping and to create lifestyle redundancy.

Join me today as we discuss the following technologies

  • Emergency Weather Alerts/Radios
  • Google News Alerts
  • Facebook/Twitter
  • Off the shelf back up power
  • Solar/Hand Crank Radio
  • The GPS
  • Thumb Drives – Portable Data
  • Lap Top Computers

Kydex and Leather with Discounts

I have been working hard to bring on two new MSB supporters to address the need for great producers of custom leather and custom kydex options.  I have now found those two and one is even doing a discount for all short term and a permanent discount for the MSB.

First for Custom Kydex Holsters

  • Orion-Concepts is the premier maker of kydex holsters for both open carry as well as concealment. They are able to mold holsters for just about any firearm on the market using their unique pressing technique that molds the holster to the curve of the human hip. In addition they are able to make just about anything you would want from kydex from magazine pouches to flashlight carriers. They are offering a 15% discount on all orders from MSB members.  The discount code in your MSB private members area.  I now personally carry my 1911 with an Orion Concepts Holster.

    * Special Note even if you are not in the MSB – Even if you are not in the MSB you can get a discount from Orion Concepts for a limited time, between now and June 5th you can get 10% off any order with the discount code TSP.  So MSB members get a bigger discount and get it any time but everyone can get a great discount from Michael over at Orion Concepts right now.

Second for Custom Leather Holsters, Belts and other Great Items

  • Lenwood LeatherLenwood Leather is a one-stop shop for all your leather needs. Whether you are looking for a great belt, holster, wallet or purse Lenwood Leather has you covered.  For MSB Members they now offer a flat $10 discount on all items and free shipping to MSB members in the U.S.  If you don’t find what you are looking for in the store just send them a message, let Jason know what you want and that you are a MSB member and He’ll put it together and still give you the discount and free shipping

Episode-671- Becoming a Better Shooter and Trainer with Airsoft Guns

Today we are going to delve a bit into the world of Airsoft as a training tool for marksmanship and tactical application.  Airsoft has immense potential for introducing new shooters to the shooting sports and offer very realistic fully accurate reproduction weapons to work with.  I think Airsoft gets a bad rap with many people who see it only as a way for pseudo military types to “play war games”.

The reality is even if gaming isn’t your thing Airsoft has a ton to offer in the way of affordable training that you can safely practice just about anywhere.

Tune in today to hear…

  • Some of the different options in Airsoft weapons
    • Spring
    • Gas
    • AEG (automatic electric guns)
  • The value of all metal gas blow back airsoft pistols for training
  • How Airsoft can let you shoot more often
  • Building a “target/training range” anywhere
  • The value of “cheap plastic spring pistols”
  • Accelerting the learning curve for new shooters
  • Being a better coach because you can be more relaxed
  • Using airsoft to replace fear with respect
  • Transitioning new shooters to conventional arms
  • Protecting the 2nd amendment by promoting gun ownership and safety

Episode-670- The Power of Redundancy

As we settle into the new home and office I am thinking a lot about redundancy.  Until now the Arkansas retreat was exactly that a retreat we could rely on to survive 6-12 months with no support.  I would have done that job well but certainly not in total comfort.  Of course we had to be realistic with two houses to run we had to split our resources making the Arkansas location a fall back for the worst case scenario.

Well now this is our home, people ask where would you bug out to now, my response is, most likely we wouldn’t.  Given this was my previous fall back location it is ideal now as a place to bug in, in all but the acute localized disaster.  So the goal now is to make our home as redundant, resilient and as convenient as possible for our long term support.

So today in keeping with that we focus on redundancy as an overall concept and examine multiple scenarios and how we can build redundancy into our daily lives.

Join me today as we discuss…

  • A redundancy primer, self reliance vs. self sufficiency
  • What exactly is redundancy
  • What does “layered redundancy” mean
  • Learning from the concept of “flat tire redundancy”
  • What permaculture teaches us about redundancy
  • Creating economic redundancy
  • Creating energy redundancy
  • Creating food redundancy
  • Creating black out redundancy
  • Creating self defense redundancy
  • Some final thoughts on making redundancy automatic

Episode-667- Modern Survival Ways to Save Money Part Three

Your tips and ideas to save money just keep coming so our first show back after the final move will continue in this series.  I am thinking long term about doing perhaps one more show like this in the series.  After that I will still have TONS of tips from all your submissions.  So my thought is to give our one tip a day on the show as part of the intro segment to keep it fresh and new, etc.

Would love to hear your thoughts on that, either way you can continue to submit your ways to save money by sending an email with “TSP Money Saver” in the subject line to jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com
