So today I am on the road taking the RV up to Arkansas so there isn’t a new show but there is a rebroadcast of a show from August of 2008, I did this to expose new listeners to some of the early days.  It is also in response to a lot of recent questions about how I was able to call the 2008 crash.

The reality is the writing was clearly on the wall already. This again was in August a full month before the September fall off of the cliff.

Warning – While the introduction was recorded in the studio the majority of the episode is from the time I was doing the show in the car and BEFORE I sorted out the audio to a reasonable level.  In other words the audio quality sucks, try to focus on the content.

APMEX Want’s To Buy Your Gold and Silver

Well I am now more bullish on gold and silver.  Just got an email from APMEX asking to buy my gold and silver American Eagles.  They are paying 3.00 OVER spot on Silver and 38.00 OVER spot on gold.  Given this is one of the largest dealers in the US it should tell you something.   They are currently selling silver at like 5 dollars OVER spot as well.

Here is part of the email

“APMEX Wants To Buy Your U.S. Mint Products!

Dear Jack,

Due to the recent incredible demand for Gold and Silver bullion products, APMEX would like to offer you an exclusive opportunity to LOCK IN YOUR PRICES and sell us some of your U.S. Mint collection. This is a limited time offer and it is first come, first served until we have secured enough U.S. Mint bullion products to meet our current demand!

“We Want These Products:

We will pay you $38.00 over the current spot price of Gold for your Gold American Eagles. ANY year, ANY quantity!

We will pay you $3.00 over the current spot price of Silver for your Silver American Eagles. ANY year, ANY quantity!

We will pay you $1,250.00 for your 2010 America The Beautiful 5 oz. Silver coin sets. “

To me this is one of those small but significant signals that many big financial analysts miss.  The key here if you have ever sold gold or silver is you usually get right about spot price.  Be it eagles or generic rounds or what ever, each class has a spot price.

Generally spot is what dealers pay and some level over spot is what they sell at.  Silver is currently at about 45 and some change so 3 over spot represents a 6% premium on Silver Eagles.  That is not even close to out of line when you are buying from a dealer but it isn’t very common when selling to a dealer.

The conclusion is simple, APMEX one of the largest metal dealers in the U.S. believes that now is the time to buy even if you have to pay a little more.

Does this mean I am converting all my cash to silver or gold?  No and I am not saying you should either, given I hold significant metal reserves already I won’t buy much if any but it does tell us something about the current outlook.   I also think if you are currently buying an ounce or two a month it may make these recent highs a bit easier to handle.

FWIW – I have NO RELATIONSHIP or affiliation with APMEX.  They are just one place I have purchased metal from in the past and I am on their mailing list.  I have tried, UNSUCCESSFULLY to get some sort of discount or shipping deal from them from the MSB but they have never responded.

Forum Problems – We are working on it.

UPDATE – You are seeing this page because we are in the process of getting the move accomplished.

 

Once again we are experiencing an outage of the TSP forum, this time the primary site and the podcast are not effected.  The simple reality is we have grown to a level where we are adversely effecting the fellow customers on the shared hosting service.    HostGator is a great company and has served us well for a long time and if you think about how big TSP is and how we stream 20,000 plus audio files a day you can really see they are not a lightweight by any stretch.

So we are now faced with moving two sites survivalpodcast.net (MSB and audio server) and thesurvivalpodcast.com (main site and forum) over to a fully dedicated solution.   I have already located the host we will be using and we will have gobs of bandwidth beyond our monthly needs for a long time to come, we will have a gig up-link port and a smoking server with tons of processing power and RAM.

They also offer a support package I will be purchasing with a guaranteed response time of 5 minutes or less to all emergencies 24x7x365.

Of course I am at the homestead in Arkansas right now and running on my ATT wireless access stick.  This is no time to be making a move like this so here is what we are going to do going forward.

1.  The forum admin team is working on getting a caching solution in place on the forum as a get by.  Hopefully hostgator will then turn our forum back on and we can get it back up for about a week.

2.  Monday when I return to Arlington the first order of business after I cut the days show will be coming up with a migration plan with the new host.

3.  Sometime next week the new host will begin the migration, the forum will go into maintenance mode and the site may be unavailable at times, though not likely it could happen so I am letting you know.

4.  Once the migration is complete I will redirect the domains and when that propagates internet wide (about 24 hours) we will be back in business at full tilt.

This is going to cost more (of course right?) but I think the investment is warranted.  The upside is huge.

With dual processors, a dedicated box, a gig up-link and massive RAM everything you do at TSP will be faster for you, especially downloads of the show at peak times.

We will have a dedicated tech support team that will be ultra responsive to any problems and no matter who your host is there will be problems.

I would like to point out yet again that I don’t have anything negative to say about HostGator, they are a wonderful host.  We are just to a point where they sell say vans and SUVs and we need a couple buses to accommodate all our people.

I will continue to recommend them to bloggers and site owners for many years.  The challenges of a site like TSP are unique and we are simply at a point where we need a higher level of performance and service than they provide.

Every day I get emails from people that say my ______ just doesn’t get it.  I have tried explaining _____ and ______ and ______ and they still don’t think there is any reason to have a preparedness plan.  What else can I say to reach them.   Now it is easy to write off people, call them sheeple (as most are), etc until they are someone we love and care about.  The problem though can be summed up in the quote, “a profit has no honor in his own country”.

Many of the people closest to you will be some of the last people to listen to you.  Today’s show will hopefully speak on your behalf, it may be something you can provide to the “unreachable” or at least the moderately resistant.  Unlike many in the “survival” niche I do not believe that you reach people with fear, gloom and doom but with empowerment.   So while today’s show may be like preaching to the choir for a lot of the audience I think you will enjoy it as well.  In the end I hope it also gives you a tool for reaching others.

Today I think we need to really begin to think about individual food production.  I 100% meant what I said yesterday about fearing future food shortages and as a result skyrocketing food prices.  America was once a “nation of farmers”, yet I think that statement gets misunderstood.

In our nation of farmer, yes, there were many true farmers in the way we generally think of the word.  Families who farmed more than 100 acres and literally earned their living from their land.  Yet at the same time countless men were tradesman and professionals as a primary source of income but still maintained a “farm” from a few to a few dozen acres.

These farms fed their families and raised additional income by selling surplus.  They also preserved much of the harvest to deal with winter shortages and other hard times.  Somewhere along the way the time clock and next promotion began to bury the small farms in the new reality of suburbia.  Yet even in the initial stages of suburbia the spirit lived on for a while.   Today we must continue to rekindle our roots as producers of food.
