Due some business commitments I was not able to record a show this morning on my drive in.  The show will return Monday, I am also kicking around the idea of a “weekend edition” this week to make up for today by recording a show on my drive home tonight.  No promises but I will see what I can do.

As modern survivalists and preppers we plan in various ways to deal with man disasters.  Yet one disaster almost everyone must deal with sooner or later is the loss of a job.  For a family this can be a disaster, for a well prepped person it is nothing more then an unfortunate occurance and can even be a blessing.

Given we talk about how there is no downside to prepping around here and how we should prepare for “personal disaster” first because it is the most likely I thought it was past time to do a show on specifically what to do once you have lost a job.

I will also continue my “intro segment” about current events.  Today what the Obama administration is doing right (yes right) about illegal immigration and what I think the eventual endgame is, and to quote Chris Rock, it ain’t right.

In an effort to provide more “what you can do” action items I decided to do a show today on common foods we eat every day and mostly can buy in any supermarket that will store well.  I though in a lot of ideas of what to do with this food day to day so you can eat what you store and store what you eat.  I finish up with how long term storage meats from providers like Mountain House compliment this approach very well.

I am also continuing with a current events intro segment prior to housekeeping again do to positive feedback from yesterday.  You get three rants and three auto rants today.  On the rants we have Susie Orman my favorite useful idiot, The Today Show piece on urban survivalists that I turned down and “Plan C” a plan by the Fed to dump another 3 Trillion Dollars of monopoly money into our economy to bail out commercial real estate.

Today I go through a variety of items many preppers overlook or even if they have them in place they are not organized as part of their preps.  Some are simple and practical like certain overlooked forms of insurance.  We look at the simple value of spare sets of keys, contact lists, over the counter meds and more.

Don’t forget the pets, we talk about that a bit too today.  I also cover things like practic drills, safety deposit boxes (why you need one, you may not have thought of this), simple cheap AC invertors, simple back up battery power and more.

Today we actually have two topics to discuss, first I will give you my initial thoughts on the new reality television series “The Colony“.  This show was a pleasant surprise so far so tune in to get my thoughts on this show that places 10 folks into a true SHTF scenario.

Then I switch gears and get you thinking about your fall gardening projects.  I know it is mid summer, temps are over 100 in many areas and fall seems miles away.  It isn’t!  Many of us are already 14 weeks or less to our first killing frost and need to start acting now.  Others may not be there yet but we need to start planning.  I will tell you want to plant now and how to plan for the big production you can expect at the end of the season as well.

Farewell to a Friend

There will be no Survival Podcast today as I will be taking my old buddy Lakota to the vet in about an hour to be put down.  Lakota was a good buddy, we spent over a decade together and it is a sad day for me but I know it is time.  He stopped taking food and water last night and can barely stand.  He has had problems for about a year but seemed happy so we just took care of him.

We reached the end of the road last night, after a lifetime of caring for animals a man knows.  While a sad day I am at peace with it, over a decade ago we adopted him as a full grown adult Husky from The American Eskimo Dog rescue society.  He had been abused, his ears mutilated by an arrogant breeder who didn’t think he measured up to a “standard” and was in need of a home.

In those years he escaped numerous times and ran for miles because it was in his blood.  He knew true freedom during our three years in Pennsylvania on his escapes in the farm fields and sleeping in beds he would dig in the snow, the way his breed was designed to do.  I will miss him but his life was better because we were able to care for him and ours was better because he was a part of it.

It’s Monday and time for another episode were I answer audience questions.  To day I discuss topics such as composting, debt, a credit card follow up, city vs country living, a total SHTF and more.

  • Are credit cards OK if you always pay your full balance?
  • What are the advantages/disadvantages of living in the city, small towns, suburbs, remotely, etc.?

  • Is cooking an important skill to learn for SHTF and daily survival?
  • What can you and what can’t you compost?  What can you compost but probably should not?
